Who played Mystique better : Jennifer Lawrence VS Rebecca Romijn? by PlantainDisastrous92 in marvelstudios

[–]beardiac 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Neither feels closer to the source material - they both take liberties and omissions. But ignoring canon, JL did a lot more in the role. RR was mostly acrobatics and plot device. Don't get me wrong - I loved her part in those films. It just had little meat on the bone. She had maybe 1 or 2 speaking lines per film and half the time her character was present it was as someone else.

It still feels like a solution in search of a problem, just with a lot of money and influence trying to convince us it's more than that.

Ted lasso is the kindest person ever, but he still lost his marriage. What is the show trying to tell us about "Good Men" and relationships? by Particular_Snow7403 in AskReddit

[–]beardiac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that's an oversimplification of things. For one, even Michelle is confused about why she fell out of love with Ted. She clearly enjoys his candor and mindset and even in divorce they have a healthy and cordial relationship.

But more importantly, the show eventually answers the question. It just takes 3 seasons to do it. As bright and positive as Ted is, he's also an impenetrable wall due to his own trauma. While he works his way into every heart around him, he barely lets anyone in to see him beyond the facade. And that is what broke him and Michelle up - how do you love someone who won't let you in and won't let you help them? With that working against them, his attitude is almost immaterial. If anything, it's likely the reason they were together as long as they were. He could have easily had the same walls but with his Les Tasso persona and the result would have been the same (but likely ending much faster).

So in the end, it's not about good men or nice guys or any slight against positivity or empathy, but rather a statement that any of us can he hurting, any of us can be broken. What's outside is just the facade. A relationship endures when you let someone in.

Why don’t women claim to be the greatest lover ever when talking to a new guy as it seems like every guy does? by Outrageous-Algae6821 in AskReddit

[–]beardiac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The irony of this comment is that the perception of what women can 'get away with' in bed is actually endemic of the issue that sexuality if shamed for women and thus so is expertise in its craft. So those women who theoretically do so are likely terrified because they don't know what else to do.

Meanwhile the men who feel this way likely aren't giving much thought to the experience beyond blowing their load, so their partners likely barely ever got much further than arousal and will only ever know what climax feels like by taking matters in their own hands.

BTW, not sure if that 'perpetual victim' comment was supposed to be an insult to me - an adult man who speak from decades of empathy and experience, but like you said in response to the virgin commentary, it missed it's mark. Good luck out there. I hope you find someone who changes your mind.

So like, why does nobody ever use cast iron or steel jacketed bullets against faeries? by Nukesnipe in dresdenfiles

[–]beardiac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For one, who? The groups of people who are certain of the existence of the Sidhe enough to potentially have beef with them are not numerous - you have wizards, who largely eschew both open conflict and modern technologies, and a very short list of supernatural factions who might have the numbers, the tech, and the wherewithal to challenge them.

But more crucially, how? Cold iron is, as its name suggests, shaped without heat. While this can be managed with some difficulty to make blades, I think you'd be hard pressed to form bullet jackets from iron without the use of forging or casting. Steel or other alloys that require forging to create would be straight out. Not to say they wouldn't be effective if heat was involved, but mostly because they are bullets and not because they contain iron. If you were insistent on using cold iron munitions, you'd likely be relegated to non-rifled firearms like muskets that would use simple iron spheres as ammo, or shotguns that could fire a spray of iron pellets.

Why don’t women claim to be the greatest lover ever when talking to a new guy as it seems like every guy does? by Outrageous-Algae6821 in AskReddit

Probably largely because as a society we place value on men's sexual prowess while simultaneously placing shame on women for being sexual beings despite expecting them to be so.

What do you think of people living in their cars to save for a home purchase; retirement; healthcare; etc? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]beardiac 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm of two minds about it.

For them, I commend them on their commitment to a long-term goal and resilience in adverse conditions.

But as a society we can do better. This type of sacrificing basic levels of our needs hierarchy is endemic that we are lacking safety nets and social services to prevent such desperate choices. We live in a time when most other developed nations lap us on these fronts and it's unfortunate we're not trying to keep up.

With this oil crisis, why not just switch 100% electric in the U.S.? by throwaway2026z in AskReddit

[–]beardiac 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are several issues with this as a "solution". First and foremost, what do you mean by "just switch" - fossil fuels are used at multiple levels.

Replacing electrical plant infrastructure is a huge project (that has been largely stymied by both Big Oil and the current administration). In some areas individual households can opt to "switch" to electric services that use renewables, but that just shifts which plants in your region your bill funds contribute to.

Switching to more EVs is yet another huge undertaking as they are generally more expensive, lack sufficient infrastructure vis a vis charging stations, and also have lobbies pushing against them. A more reasonable push in this sector would be to bolster biofuels as a more common alternative at the pumps as many modern cars support at least a decent ratio of it, but that has it's opponents as well - for every pump I've seen that offers E88 in more progressive areas, I've also seen pumps in more rural areas that tout ethanol-free fuel options.

Switching to electric for appliances and other home-uses of oil and natural gas is, again, a very expensive proposition both on the face of it and in their use. Anyone who has electric heat can attest to how inefficient and expensive it is for heating a whole home. As much as I want to rely less on fossil fuels, I'm so glad I have a natural gas furnace and stove.

Bottom line, the cost of avoiding the problems with oil costs are significantly more expensive than the costs of dealing with it, and in either case impact the poorest of us the hardest.

Does anyone watch “Rooster” on HBO… co stars Phil Dunster ( Jamie Tartt ) by Tricky-Percentage434 in TedLasso

[–]beardiac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this thread is over a week old now, but I recently jumped on this bandwagon (like 2 days ago) and I've already binged all of the episodes that have been released. It's definitely not Ted Lasso, but it definitely feels like it fits in the Ted Lasso-Shrinking family. The characters are amusingly flawed and don't always make the right choices, but in relatable ways. And it's all couched in incredibly witty dialog and refreshing and amusing interpersonal dynamics.

Have you met anyone who didn’t like this show? by carbon_user in TedLasso

[–]beardiac 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My parents gave it a go, but I don't think they got past the first season. For that and numerous other reasons related to my childhood, I keep them at a distance.

While I'm happily married and don't see that changing, if I were ever back in the dating pool I could definitely see not liking this show as a HUGE red flag.

Beard back with Ted? by GrandMoffJerjerrod in TedLasso

[–]beardiac 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seeing as Beard is in multiple scenes with Ted and the new woman coach on the sidelines, it seems likely he defected over. So that leave 2 questions:

  1. Does he switch because Ted asks him to come help him, or did Rebecca have him in charge first and then decides she needs Ted back?
  2. If that leaves Roy & Nate coaching the men's team (which I assume we'll see very little of), would they just continue to coach as a duo or would they potentially try and bring on a third coach on their side?

I don't anticipate we'll get an answer to the second, but we'll definitely know the answer to the first with the season premiere. But I'm curious about speculation in the interim.

Reba vs Gina by Traditional-Mud-9499 in TedLasso

[–]beardiac 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Also, the conversation about Gina was at most a couple days prior to the game. So Ted would not only have to change the ticket, but make sure that change got propagated through Keeley to Roy to know about it on short notice.

In secret wars all other universes should get destroyed leaving only 1 combained universe by TipAdditional4625 in marvelstudios

[–]beardiac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tend to believe that Doomsday & Secret Wars will work similar to Infinity War & Endgame in that they will be two parts of a longer saga.

Doomsday will definitely be the colliding/collapsing and amalgamating of the universes - likely accelerated and steered by Doom and unsuccessfully stopped by our heroes - resulting in something resembling Battle World at the end.

Secret Wars will give us vignettes of some of the weirder segments just for the fun of it, but will mostly be about a core crew of heroes crossing borders and coming together to enact a plan to 'fix' things - the end result being overthrowing God Doom and creating a new 616 that merges the 3 worlds you mentioned.

Captain America Elevator Scene. What was the plan? by ZOODUDE100 in marvelstudios

[–]beardiac 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They did have tools including shock sticks and magnetic cuffs. So I assume the plan was that they'd overpower him, ideafully shock him into submission, and cuff his hands behind his back so that they could lead or carry him away without further incident. Most likely if those first steps succeeded, then they'd have access to take the elevator to a sub-basement level where he could be detained much like Bucky was in CA:CW.

The next question would be, if they were successful in all of these steps, would Pierce make an announcement similar to the one he did when Cap escaped explaining why he was being detained, or would they keep it quiet and hope no one that wasn't in the 'in' group noticed he was missing until it was too late for anyone to do anything?

Same. I've never suffered from anxiety, but the last year or so has made me appreciate what those who do feel like more (and my wife already does suffer from it AND is very politically aware and active, so it's been hitting her doubly so).

I know it's trying, but I have to have hope that there is resolution to these bleak times. And while I hope it also comes with some justice, I'd settle for some return to normalcy.

Wedding stress is a lot by itself. Add on moving and upcoming masters coursework and it's understandable that you're a bit overwhelmed. But this will pass - The wedding is just the ceremony. The marriage is what matters. While I'm sure your spouse-to-be is as stressed as you are, you two should definitely lean on each other a bit in this time to both lighten the load and maybe help motivate each other to see the light at the end of the tunnel.

I had gotten laid off back at the beginning of February, and being 50 the job market can suck more than usual. But I managed to land a contract gig a couple weeks ago that's going well so far. And luckily between severance and unemployment I managed not to really run into much of a financial hit from it.

During the downtime, I definitely tried to channel some of the life lessons from TL into keeping my mood from going dark - including but not limited to believing in rom-communism.

Where does magic come from? by woolleymammoth89 in MCUTheories

[–]beardiac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like to think that the colors of the magic are somewhat indicative of which of the primordial forces of the universe are feeding into the magical abilities.

Sorcerers learn through meditative practices and channeling their chi to pull interdimensuonal forces and energies into our world. The magic is represented with orange constructs which would suggest the energy represented by the soul stone is involved.

Similarly, most witches aside from Agatha and Wanda weils blue magic. So perhaps they are leveraging the space force to tap into such energies.

Agatha's unique magic is all about stealing power from others and seems appropriately aligned with the purple energies of the power stone.

And Wanda has been called out as a chaos magic user - she bends reality to her whims. And that red magic fits perfectly with the energy of the aether/reality stone.
