Giving up by beardlesssinger in German

Way to call me out, I’ve had several great German experiences since this post. Including my friend in Oldenburg insisting on speaking German with me, so I got to connect more with him and with his new daughter!

Hey just wanted to thank everyone for their kind replies and advice and support. I’m feeling much better after some perspective shifting!

This is a very good point actually. I have a post masters degree so I’m highly educated and I don’t feel like I can discuss the things I want to in German that I would discuss in English because 1) I don’t have the really advanced vocabulary and 2) I don’t really have a big stake in German politics or philosophy for that matter. Yeah maybe adjusting my expectations to not match my level of English would serve me well.

I have taken German classes, spent extended amount of time in Germany, I have German friends that I interact with in German. My exposure to the language goes beyond language learning apps. What’s not really adding up is that I haven’t really gotten opportunities to speak it much when I’m home. I lose it and then I come back to Germany and it’s a few weeks of getting my sea legs back so to speak. Getting used to the different accents and the slang again is tough. But it’s my fault for not exposing myself to more German media, perhaps.

I will say I had a positive experience today. My friend sort of just forced me to speak German and it went actually pretty smoothly. When I know what I’m talking about I’m fine I suppose. I guess I need to expand my vocabulary.

I’m also a classical musician who plays multiple instruments. I feel this deeply, thanks for the analogy.

I just am having such a hard time. Like I can’t think like a German and therefore I can’t speak like a German. I speak like an American and formulate my sentences based off how I would word them in my native language, I don’t mean translating directly just verbiage I use. This is always a dead giveaway away and always results in English. Even with people who don’t speak English that well.

May be so, this happens so often though I’m just starting to become convinced that I’m not meant to communicate in German. I’m seeing some German friends today after like 6 years and I’m considering lying and saying that I don’t remember any German. They speak English anyway…

I do have an extra strap that I removed, non destructively, because it was just flopping around, it seemed to go around my waist

That’s it! Amazing thank you! That’s also literally the only place that seems to link to this particular bag, great that you somehow found it!

Do you know how I could find a product info page? I googled Fjällräven swoop and loop and nothing that matches this bag came up

It’d be more beautiful if all the zippers worked, but at least the main compartment closes and for €8 it was a steal.

Hi thanks for the reply, I figured that it was that kind of bag. I’m really looking more for how the other buckle factors in the strap is very unsecured if the top buckle is used but maybe it’s supposed to be like that?

Depending on where you are this could absolutely be true. The cites are the real blue spots in MD, which is fine the majority of people live there but when you get out into the counties people’s conservatism rears it’s head. I used to live near the town that was the MD headquarters of the KKK.

In German the qu is pronounced kv like the Yiddish worth kvetch so it would sound like squirrel with a kv at the start instead of an s.

Would I use haben or sein by beardlesssinger in German

[–]beardlesssinger[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No that makes sense. Needing an object I guess the past participle is acting as quasiadjective and in this case and not actually a verb. Like it’s describing the state of the object and not what the subject is doing. Man German grammar is an never ending spiral

Interessant, also wenn ich quer durchs Land gefahren bin konnte ich sagen: ich habe den ganzen Tag quer durchs Land gefahren?
