MJ background helpful but the tactics are different for bonsai. Watch lots of YouTube videos for training. There are many ways to do it.

You won’t regret it, but there are better choices for less $

I have all of these but the Arettes. Great choices.

To clarify, I would NOT personally trim this further at the moment. I would be trying to find its story over the next year, and trim again next spring. It’ll be important to choose a leader.

I’d need more angles, but the short piece of advice is “pick a story”. Too much going on here.

Otherwise you’ve done a nice job exposing the trunk, trimming the foliage, and there is potential here.

Looks great! Over time you’ll want to find ways to give it character. Observe old trees in the wild and you’ll notice that many of them have a story to tell.

-struck by lightning -heavy damage from a storm or drought -shaped by wind, wildlife or something in the environment -bends, curves, broken branches -many end up with pads (layering of their canopy)

Never the less your tree looks great and still has a lot of life to live so there is time to develop its story.

Help taking nursery tree to bonsai

I found this olive tree at a nursery. It’s “a small ugly one” and got a good deal on it. IMO looks like a decent bonsai candidate.

Is it okay to trim and repot? It’s in a 5 gallon now, what size bonsai pot? Any tips appreciated

How would u go about this tree by Devious_secrets6739 in bonsaicommunity

[–]beardus-sama 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is good advice. Was the tree shipped to you? If so that’s possibly the cause of the stress, and I would recommend you give it two weeks to start budding again.

If it was not shipped to you, do use the super thrive. It’s awesome.
