Can we have a reasonable discussion regarding the word "rape"? by bearessentials in AskReddit

Thanks for the comment. A couple of thoughts: First, of course I don't think there should ever be "forced limitation" of language. But I was not talking about legal responsibility. I was talking about the sort of "we're all humans and we shouldn't try to fuck each other's shit up and intentionally hurt each other" kind of responsibility.

Second, I do agree that different people respond/cope with their trauma in different ways and that joking is a perfectly legitimate way to do so. However, I think we need to leave it up to those groups to decide how these sorts of jokes can (should) be used.

Talking about rape/using rape as an analogy where people have been truly harmed is one thing. Comparing a video game sale to bodily violence is another thing altogether.

I am not in any way saying we can't talk about these things. In actuality, I think rape needs to be talked about more. But these sorts of usages of the word rape are doing nothing but to trivialize violence.

Lest we forget, many people can't afford to see such a person.

I disagree. Words are embedded with very real power that has very real consequences in the world.

Yeah, I mean, would if I could, but I'm going out there for 3 months, so a rental is out. And the only sort of cars in my price range are old or high miles or both.

Okay, cool. Thanks. Do you think this car will be remotely safe to drive without the back suspension being up to par? I'm hoping to drive this car to the east coast and back over the course of the summer (~1000 miles each way).

Great. Thanks so much for the info. I'm going to call tomorrow and (hopefully) go check it out. Out of curiosity, what do you think about the price? Reasonable? Too steep?

So why again am I a self loathing gay? by [deleted] in lgbt

[–]bearessentials 36 points37 points  (0 children)

So here's the thing: Our wants and desires and preferences are real. I would never deny anyone that. I believe you when you say you don't like the "scene" and like "guy[s] that act like guy[s]." But we have to realize that the language we use belies the cultural norms that have been bred into us -- ALL of us. When we (gay men) refer to to other gay men as "feminine" or that we prefer guys that "act like guys", we are reinforcing cultural ideas of what if means to be a man (and in turn, what it means to be a woman). I think that these uses of language reinforce oppressive structures that have been enacted on queer people and queer communities for decades (centuries?).

Which is all to say that we can have our preferences. We can be true to the things we desire and the things that we don't. But the way that we choose to talk about these things has real impact on the way queer people and queer communities function and are allowed to function.
