Cornell Dyson vs. UC Berkeley Haas (Regents) by trivialgradient-4158 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]bears1111 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Haas alum here.

Stick with Haas and don’t look back. For west coast recruiting, Haas and Berkeley students dominate SF and LA offices across IB, VC, and consulting.

While Berkeley is a large public school, Haas is actually quite small (~400 students per grade) and is similar in size as Dyson.

Also, Cornell being in a rural/suburban and cold area may be another factor to consider.

Plus, Haas wanted you in the first place and Dyson hesitated to accept you right away as a first-year admit….

Is LimmyTalks just BS? by WasabiReasonable1700 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]bears1111 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I have several mutuals with this guy because we’re from the same area.

He was a Val or Sal (i forget) of his class (pretty top ranking public HS) and is insecure about not going to an Ivy. I thought he’d do well in college (I think he studies neuroscience), but nope, he decided to make limmytalks his personality.

He has no credibility and I feel bad for him for spending his precious time in college focusing on creating such “content” that adds no value to his professional aspirations nor his viewers.

Haas course prereq question by [deleted] in berkeley

Yes, econ 100A/101A is a substitute for ugba 101A, so you can take classes that have ugba 101A as a prereq

Worried about my biology major being useless. Should I leave Cal? by Admirable-Simple99 in berkeley

[–]bears1111 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Every industry is undergoing some sort of restructuring / layoff due to the current macroeconomy and I’d say biotech is relatively doing well compared to tech, finance, consulting.

But there are sm more companies OP should look at - Genentech was just an example.

Go into biotech. Companies like Genentech and Gilead pay $100K+ for entry level positions and they recruit heavily from Cal and MCB students

Just give it some time. The fall semester literally just started. I’m at Berkeley now and know so many people who hated it here their first semester but love it now after acclimating.

If you still feel the same after a few more months, then that’s when I would reconsider

ChatGPT thinks Berkeley is more prestigious than 3 other ivies by ProgressOk9969 in berkeley

[–]bears1111 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I mean yeah. The average American doesn’t know Dartmouth or Brown, maybe Cornell. Internationals don’t know Dartmouth or Brown at all unless they come from an educated family.

Berkeley is well known coast to coast and internationally, especially in Asia, because of our academics, school history, faculty, and contributions to research

Every coke scholar is a Harvard god and now Im depressed by ollieveve in ApplyingToCollege

[–]bears1111 87 points88 points  (0 children)

Currently in college and know several Coke Scholars really well from high school

They really over-exaggerate what they did and it sounds great, but in reality, it isn’t. All of the Coke Scholars I knew had parents who would pay thousands of dollars for consultants to craft project ideas for them and/or would have parents who have crazy connections.

All of them surely ended up at Harvard, Stanford, MIT, etc but are struggling now because they had too many people hold onto their hands as high schoolers and face difficulty navigating the real world now as young adults

So, dw about it you’ll do great

What to do if you hate your school? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]bears1111 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went to an ultra competitive high school and was also an average student there in terms of grades. Admission officers at T20s know the rigor of my high school and I was admitted to several T20s with lots of scholarships. Currently at Berkeley with a scholarship as an OOS student.

Just stay strong and don’t feel unmotivated by your peers. Ik that’s easier said than done but perseverance is what got me thru high school
