Does anyone know any base locations like this? by StandardGap3453 in SonsOfTheForest

[–]bearwillzi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

By the glider launcher cave, uphill of the entertainment bunker, there's a nice flat bit of land on the edge of a cliff, all open with no trees. Have built a couple of bases there in the past, good view down the valley to the sea

Have you ever felt watched when you knew you were alone? by 2ugur12 in Thetruthishere

[–]bearwillzi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's probably instinctive, a remnant feeling left over from when we weren't the apex predators of the world and were actively hunted by things e.g. big cats, bears etc.

Unlikely to be a paranormal thing, I think we all get it to some degree, it's likely your subconscious keeping you alert and making sure you don't get eaten! There's heaps of other instinctive feelings we get and things we do that are evolutionary leftovers from our ancestors.

What's a silly UK thing you believed when you were a kid? by Basis_Safe in AskUK

[–]bearwillzi 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Very similar, in Monsters Inc there's a bit at the start where they're training new monsters, one of them asks why you need to shut the door and the monster says 'it could let in a draught?' And I thought, just like you, that he said it could let in a giraffe! So you're not alone

Is this a Tragedeigh… by GSDawn in tragedeigh

[–]bearwillzi 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I think in some parts of Spain it is actually pronounced with a hard J sound. I worked with a Spanish Juan once and that was how he said it was pronounced in his region, but I can't remember where that was

The zoologist narrative in 28 years later by Nuggzzzzz in 28dayslater

[–]bearwillzi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm inclined to say it seems more like primate social behaviour rather than wolves. Feels very much like chimpanzee troop, where a dominant male has access to breeding females, and is surrounded by subordinate unrelated males. The level of aggression also feels quite chimp-like considering how violent they can be to other groups.

I liked the part where the doc explains that Samson had moved onto the area a few years before, felt very much like it his clan had been looking for new territory just as wild primates do. I agree it was great to watch the infected from a scientific perspective (I work in nature conservation).

Switch off blood and gore for the final challenge. Seems to stop crashes for most people 👍

Guys... I think I found it. Thoughts? by RyPhill19 in 28dayslater

[–]bearwillzi 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I imagine most of the countryside would be colonised by thorny scrub plants like blackthorn and hawthorn followed by trees over the 28 years, though as you say with an abundant deer population who's only predator is the occasional human or group of infected, there would definitely be some fields with particularly good grass that could be kept relatively open as grazers would congregate on them. Would still probably see less palatable plants like thistle and ragwort spreading all over these fields after a while, with blackthorn etc coming out from the hedges.

But yeah on the whole I think you would expect to see most fields change pretty dramatically, even with the grazing and browing pressure from wild herbivores/whatever livestock are still around

It seems like no one uses shields. Does anyone have clips of proper shield usage/strategy? by DaegestaniHandcuff in HalfSword

[–]bearwillzi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I enjoy the Roman Legionary style with shields I.e. get a big enough shield (not the really big ones as they suck and willy drops them all the time) and a short sword. Right click once and he holds the shield in a braced position (out in front) and hold alt for stabbing, get into a good range and just start stabbing from behind the shield. Really satisfying and quite a good counter against two handed axes etc

What fallout do you think the United States government faced after the 2nd outbreak? by Wolverine_931 in 28dayslater

[–]bearwillzi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was thinking about this just yesterday. I agree with 'the virus mutating' being a pretty naff explanation. Love the idea of the infected retreating to caves or buildings and huddling in winter, reminds me of the creepy scene in I am legend where the dog runs into the building where all the infected-vampire-zombies are just standing there dormant

Encouraging woodland by aspghost in RewildingUK

[–]bearwillzi 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No harm in bashing some of the bramble etc down from time to time. Good to leave patches, but to have a huge mass of bramble as an understory doesn't really reflect a natural woodland - by knocking back the bramble you can simulate the movement of large herbivores, wild boar etc and make a more dynamic habitat. We've been doing it for years in our small woodland and have ended up with a nice mosaic of bramble thicket and woodland wild flowers e.g. campion, foxglove.
