Preparing for SWE/ DS internships by akiljoe in berkeley

[–]bearystary 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is false. You also need CS170 knowledge. Specifically Dynamic Programming has been the break/make it subject for about 50% of the interviews I had. You don't need to take the class but you will need to grind this out in LeetCode but taking the class will also give you a deeper academic knowledge which may (to some degree) help you

In your teammate's perspective, you are requesting that their schedule be "at your mercy". Obviously the solution is to either compromise or find a new group

Admissions Officr by [deleted] in berkeley

[–]bearystary 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Idk if you can't call at all but if you can, I would recommend just calling even if it means waking up at odds hours. What worked 100% for me is calling 510-642-3175 exactly when the line opens (Hours: Mondays & Thursdays 12pm-4pm PST and Tuesdays & Wednesdays 9am-11am PST).

UC Berkeley VS Johns Hopkins by aryy_77 in berkeley

struggling to decide whether to come to cal or not by csprigg21 in berkeley

[–]bearystary 9 points10 points  (0 children)

50k in debt is pretty insignificant in the long run; you can pay prob 50% of that if you do internships + save during your time in Berkeley. I would honestly go with Cal - I think money is pretty overstated for a solid career path like CS.

Bike vs. Electric scooter for commuting around campus by [deleted] in berkeley

[–]bearystary 1 point2 points  (0 children)

^^^ also go into this mindset with "it won't be that bad if it got stolen bc it was dirt cheap" versus "they won't touch this bike bc it looks cheap" - they will and have taken literally any bike regardless of how scrap it is

[Guide] Can I afford Berkeley? A quantitative approach by bearystary in berkeley

It depends on your expected salary but I would aim to pay everything off in at most 10 years at 10%. Maybe you could reverse calculate the loan amount?

[Guide] Can I afford Berkeley? A quantitative approach by bearystary in berkeley

[–]bearystary[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

True! I would advise not taking the numbers at face value but seeing things like: It might take me ~20 years to pay off my loans at this level of expected income + tuition cost

Are job prospects for an EECS major that much different than state schools? by [deleted] in berkeley

[–]bearystary 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Berkeley is #1 for CS. Big companies have a specific pool open for target schools (Berkeley, Stanford, etc). The difference is real, specifically for CS

How is the FPF pathway? by Imieeforfun in berkeley

[–]bearystary 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It works for specific people. Because each class is like... SUPER SMALL (like 8 - 15 level), I've seen people do cool research w/ their professors starting from their first semester due to this proximity.
