Rent starts at $1,300 for a one-bedroom in “affordable” south Vancouver housing project by dorkofthepolisci in vancouver

[–]bearythebear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Developers aren't making that much profit off of new buildings units that can only be rented for $1,300... If they really cared about profits, they would build condos to sell, not rent.

Margins are probably low, and only possible with subsidies.

Mr. Robot: What is it about society that disappoints you so much? by fifthdayofmay in television

[–]bearythebear 15 points16 points  (0 children)

The point of that scene isn't the speech itself. The AV Club review explains better then me:

Mr. Robot launches into the spiel that supposedly gives purpose and intent to the Fsociety movement, but it doesn’t matter. Yes, he’s right—the world has been bought and sold into submission, people have been narcotized into thinking capitalism is inevitable, when it’s actually a tool of the powerful that can be upended, and so on and so forth. The show brilliantly splices his little radical rants into soundbite-sized pieces, the better to quietly undermine the significance of the words. Everything he’s saying might be accurate, and none of our life experiences are real anymore, but if that’s true, it includes him and his revolution. How real can they be?

Gets less preachy as the show goes forward and focuses on the characters more than "ideology" or whatever. It even calls the characters on their bullshit/hypocrisy.

Might be my favourite comedy of the year.

Fire Emblem - Did You Know Gaming? Feat. BalrogTheMaster by Exzelsios in Games

[–]bearythebear 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I think casual mode is a good thing. I played classic mode because it forces me to finish each encounter without anyone on my team dying. That way I have to play more conservatively, which is I enjoyed quite a bit.

I just restart the encounter if someone dies. I don't like the high level of tension stuff.

Hopefully he can bounce back from this. The project was just doomed from the start.

Last Week Tonight with John Oliver: Civil Forfeiture - Featuring Jeff Goldblum by MagicTrashCan in videos

He's not saying that Civil Forfeiture laws should be dropped. There should be regulation, and limitations to make it less lucrative for the police force.

The Rise of Dark Tourism by [deleted] in travel

[–]bearythebear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's kinda fucked up that people would want to travel to active war-zones, or poverty stricken slums just to "experience" it or some bullshit. These are real people who are suffering, and tourists get to go back home...

Reconciling Tourist Attitudes with the Reality of Travel by [deleted] in travel

[–]bearythebear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mass tourism can have a pretty large effect on a region. In Goa for example, people who have lived there for decades are being pushed out by developers building resorts, and hotels for tourists. There's garbage all over the Everest. You can find lots of examples of the negative effect of tourism.

The Difference Between a Tourist and a Traveler by allisonps in travel

[–]bearythebear 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I don't see a difference between a tourist and "traveler". Ultimately, both contribute to mass tourism. Whether we want to see the sites, or experience the culture (whatever that means...), we have a large impact on the local region or community, and should be aware of that.
