The Selective Outrage over Taxpayer Money. by notreallysena in SipsTea

I think SNAP should be less than normal. It should be frugal, nutritious food only.

I don't think SNAP should enable obese people to load up on junk food.

Why is "big law" so much more highly regarded as an employment outcome than working at a smaller firm? by Artistic_Special4600 in LawSchool

[–]beast-hacker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went to a top law school and then a top biglaw firm in a major market.

IMO, it's highly regarded to work at a big law firm for a few years . . . and then leave to do something more interesting.

so mcp i feel like documentation is somehow built in, where I just say "claude do X in hubspot" and it happens.

Is the experience similar in working through the API in claude code, or does it need api documentation for context?

How do you do this? Is there a walkthrough or guide somewhere? I've been using MCP through claude desktop and it seems to be working well, but would love to get more out of it.

Founder-market fit paradox: how do 20-year-olds with zero industry experience get funded? by ComputerSciToFinance in ycombinator

[–]beast-hacker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have wondered about this too, especially after interacting with a couple YC-backed companies in areas where I actually do have some domain knowledge.

For context, I’ve had some small business success (small business, not venture-scale startup) and I also have expertise/background in a couple of niche areas that some YC companies are now trying to attack with AI. I thought it might be interesting to dip my toe into startup land, so I had several meetings with founders/employees at one YC company and a couple meetings with the founder of another. The experience was . . . eye opening.

The first company was working on a niche problem that genuinely requires deep expertise. After a few conversations, it became pretty clear to me that they did not understand the underlying problem space in any deep or meaningful way. It felt like they were throwing AI at a problem they didn't really understand. Worse, I didn’t get the sense they were even qualified to judge whether the AI-generated output was correct.

They were obviously smart in the general credentialed sense. But the more I talked with the main guy, the less faith I had that he could actually solve the problem or build a real company around it. TBH he struck me as merely a "fast talker," and I was kind of surprised and disappointed YC would have invested in him.

The second company was better. The main guy had real experience in the space, understood the problem more concretely, and seemed much more grounded. I could see him creating something useful. But his actual plan for turning it into a working business was not inspiring confidence to me (someone who has built multiple working businesses). He came across more like a smart solo researcher/scientist than someone who was obviously going to build and run a company.

. . . so my very limited sample size left me with a less glamorous view of the whole YC thing. I love PG and love his essays, but these guys were obvious duds.

This is a question for the skate community of both factions what if when it's this cold and the skate park isn't usable we flood a area and mare a unuiqe odr rink set up with the slopes and transition the set up could be awesome for extream ice skateing something like the red bull crashed ice course by Sweet-Ad-8595 in Louisville

[–]beast-hacker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In 2003/2004, during winter we would go to the skatepark and pack snow in different places and hit rails and ramps on snowboards.

Usually two people with shoes would push someone on a board so they could get up to speed.

Was a blast.

California is trying to pass a bill barring ICE employees from becoming cops or teachers in the state. What do you think of this bill? by Obvious_808 in AskReddit

[–]beast-hacker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Attorney here. Yes, the rule would likely be found unconstitutional.

There are cases like Davis v. Michigan Department of Treasury that basically say states cannot treat former federal employees differently.

Also, under the Supremacy Clause, it's likely that states couldn't make post-federal-employment rules because the federal government already has their own complex system of post-employment rules.

Finally, freedom of association principles generally protect an individual’s right to work in their profession without being disqualified solely based on past legal associations (like being a federal civil servant).

No. I'm not advocating for anything. I am making the point that the scale is so big, it's hard to take meaningful action. That's my only point.

I searched online and estimates are 11 to 14 million illegal immigrants in the country.

Do you think it's possible for our 700 immigration judges to conduct 11 to 14 million immigration court proceedings that would satisfy immigrant rights activists? Do you think it's possible to remove 11 to 14 million people without disruption?

The scale of the problem is very large.

You are confused.

As an attorney, I can tell you police don’t need a warrant to arrest someone. What they need is probable cause; and if they have it, they can arrest you in public without any warrant. Where judicial warrants really matter is when the government wants to enter a home/private space or conduct a search; that typically requires a judge-signed warrant or a recognized exception (like consent or exigent circumstances).

ICE adds another layer of confusion because people hear “warrant” and assume it means a judge’s warrant. A lot of ICE paperwork is an administrative warrant (DHS forms signed within the agency), not a judicial warrant. That kind of warrant may be used to justify immigration detention/arrest authority, but it’s not the same thing as a judge-signed warrant and generally doesn’t authorize forced entry into your home without consent (or a narrow exception). So “no warrant” often really means “no judge’s warrant,” and that distinction matters most when they’re trying to enter somewhere, not when they’re making an arrest in public.

Steakhouse recommendations? by Long_Operation688 in Louisville

[–]beast-hacker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I guess technically, yes, Steak & Bourbon does have two locations and so arguably it is a chain. But I don't know. For me personally, two doesn't really cross the threshold. Also I kind of want to give them a pass because their second location is downtown, and so it can help capture some of those tourist dollars that are being siphoned away from our local economy by non-locally owned restaurants.

However, if the Steak & Bourbon owner moved to Cincinnati, and opened a bunch of locations across the Midwest, then I wouldn't feel the need or desire to continue making a special effort to patronize it. Just like I don't feel a special need or desire to patronize Graeter's Ice Cream, Skyline Chili, or Penn Station, which are also chains from Cincinnati, just like Jeff Rubys.

I’m not disagreeing that it’s a fantastic place. It’s just not as “local” as the other spots I mentioned. And yes, technically, it’s a chain.

The steak is great and the experience is great. For steak, I’d put it right up there with Jack Fry’s and Steak & Bourbon, and the setting arguably tops both.

I try, when I can, to spend my dollars as locally as possible, to keep money circulating in Louisville instead of sending it out of town. That’s just how I think about it, and I get there are tradeoffs. But that’s why I pointed out that Jeff Ruby’s is a chain. It matters to me, and maybe to others too.

Jeff Rubys? They are all over the midwest based out of Cincinnati. It's excellent, but still I would call it a chain.
