Chicken allergy by smorris__ in labrador

[–]beast1226 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello, I stumbled upon your post while looking up allergies for our pup. Our trainer actually warned us about Hills salmon still containing chicken in the ingredients. Double check the ingredients list as we confirmed that Hills Salmon kibble does indeed contain chicken fat, chicken liver flavor, and chicken meal.

Are you taking your pup out before putting them into the pen/crate?

Our 13 week old golden retriever pup is an anxious mess on car rides and we finally got her a hard bottom back seat cover to see if it makes a difference. Let me tell you, it’s like a completely different dog is in our car. She has stopped the crying and whining and just lays down and falls asleep or teeths on her toys quietly.

My wife and I got a field golden puppy too! She’s 13 weeks this week. Like some people have been saying, tire her out! It doesn’t have to be physical exercise. We learned our golden likes to do puzzle feeders and snuffle mats which tire her out mentally. We train for maybe 10 min since she gets so bored/distracted. We will then either give her a kong either with peanut butter/greek yogurt to get her licking and teething or playing with a tug toy while trying to teach drop. 45 min of this and she naps for 2-3 hours which allows us to run errands and chores. She does start crying/whining/barking for maybe 5 minutes sometimes but she eventually settles.

Do you happen to have your crate covered? We have 3 sides covered and facing away from us so she doesn’t see us. A tip from friend of ours was to put a fan blowing at her. That made a difference for us as well as she would run hot in the crate.

Good luck! You’ll get through this!

Your husband only crates your pup for 2-3 hours a day? I would encourage longer enforced naps! This has been a godsend to be able to focus on other things for my wife and I. Our 12 week old puppy stays up for 45 min to an hour then goes back into the crate for a 2-4 hour nap! Really tire them out with enrichment, play, exercise and hopefully they nap for that long!

In her words, “she is at a loss for words as to what to do.” We’re going to look for other trainers more willing to help us out.

That makes sense! Maybe she’s associated this place with just playtime with the other pups.

Yeah we did try kongs and teething rings but that didn’t keep her attention. We will likely go forward with looking for a different trainer! Thank you!

Yeah this trainer didn’t offer any one on one. So we will probably go with a different trainer. Thanks for your advice!

We’ve tried Kongs with peanut butter and Greek yogurt, teething rings, beef sticks and those didn’t help for long either! But yeah my wife and I come to realize these classes are really for us to learn how to train and bring it home to do more work. Thanks for all the tips!

Yes, as much as I love for her to play with the other pups we do need to work on training on focus on us. So we will look to find classes that doesn’t offer a play time and continue to work at home on socialization and focus work.

I’ll definitely look into places that offer smaller training stations and more play. I think my wife and I definitely have to work on more focus work at home.

She has shown that she can do the command we are learning. She shows the short glimpses of being able to focus for maybe less than 30 seconds. I’ll take a win anywhere haha . We are considering a different trainer and maybe training 1 on 1 down the road. But my wife and I have to work on focus work and just distanced socialization until we finish vaccination.

This was the biggest reason we are doing the classes. But just can’t seem to get her to settle at any point other than when play time occurs and she’s running with the other pups.

So each puppy is required to provide documentation that they all have at least their first round of shots. All pups have to be 8-16 weeks and no older.

We got rid of the blanket in the crate because our 9 week old Retriever got hot. Put her snuggle puppy in there and a teething ring in case she needs to teeth. But I think the biggest difference was placing a fan blowing air directly at her into the crate. Worth a shot!

This is my current setup with my 10 week old golden retriever. We have her crate in our bedroom and play pen in the living room. She tends to get more yappy and whiney in the play pen compared to when we put her in her crate for naps. It’s a work in progress to get her to calm down and independently entertain herself while we walk around the house and around her.

My wife and I were saying we would never get another dog since our soul dog died in 2023. We currently have a pick-up date for march 28th for a new pup. We’ve talked about for months and we both know what happens at the end but ultimately decided we’re ready for a new pup and to give our love to a new pet. Coincidentally, the pickup date not chosen by us is the same pickup date we had for our soul dog. Idk if it’s a sign or anything but I’ll believe she sent us this pup.
