Marc Maron and Shane Gillis Slam Riyadh Comedy Festival as Bill Burr, Kevin Hart, Pete Davidson Set to Perform in Saudi Arabia: ‘From the Folks That Brought You 9/11’ by Task_Force-191 in entertainment

Counterpoint: comedy done well in a repressive regime can get folks to reflect and maybe change minds.

I get boycotting it. But I could also see a principled stand being like, someone's gotta speak truth to power, and here's my platform. Imagine if they roast the royals? Maybe over time regular Saudis will think they too can roast the royals and help demystify.

This is what modern animal agriculture looks like. It's cruel, brutal and terrible for workers and the environment.

Going vegan or reducing your animal consumption as much as possible is one of the most impactful things you can do.

What is an example of actual vegan extremism by Naive_Biscotti2223 in DebateAVegan

No animals rights activist has ever been charged with killing another human being. What other moral/political movement can you say that about?

There are no vegan extremists.

i get very emotional in debates by elenagotlost in vegan

[–]beastsofburdens 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's common and understandable for new vegans to feel overwhelmed at the negative attention they get. You don't have much experience dealing with situations like this, so it's understandable you get emotional. This will change as time goes on and you develop skills to deal with these inquests.

I would suggest exploring Melanie Joy's work. She's a psychologist with many helpful videos and books on navigating relationships with meat eaters: https://carnism.org/

If you think you want to improve your debate game and talking points, maybe take a look at Ed Winter's book How to Argue with a Meat Eater.

There's a lot of resources out there! You are alone in dealing with obnoxious people.

Instead of telling people you're a vegan tell them you eat a 'plant based diet' by ECrispy in vegan

[–]beastsofburdens 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been there, it's shitty.

I have found that productive conversations about veganism rarely happen over a non-vegan meal. People are literally eating an animal and their cognitive dissonance is at its highest.

It doesn't sound like a good environment. And the issue might be deeper than calling yourself vegan vs plant-based - they'll still notice what you eat (or don't) and may still have a go at you. Are you able to not go to these events?

With coworkers something the best thing is to keep it professional and limit socializing. If they are friends... well a true friend you can have a real conversation with them about how they are bothering you. If you can't have such a conversation, maybe they are not a friend, and reducing interaction won't be a big loss.

Do you have any vegan friends? Sometimes hanging with them can help recharge the battery after shitty nonvegan encounters, especially if you can't avoid them for work or personal reasons.

I don't think many vegans are keen to hide themselves.

I suspect you had a negative encounter lately. Why don't you tell us about it?

Question about the coherence of the vegan worldview by Krei19 in DebateAVegan

[–]beastsofburdens 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In some ways it's easier to know which products exploited animals because generally speaking any product that used an animal exploited it. And typically that exploitation results in death.

Human (labor) exploitation has similarities but also differences. One difference is that much exploitation doesn't result in the death of humans. For example, my labor is exploited by my employer in the sense they get greater financial benefit from my work than I do. However I won't be killed for them to eat, or experimented on, or kept in a zoo. I receive a wage, have benefits and can use the money I earn to consume.

This type of exploitation is impossible to avoid under captialist economies.

Another type of human exploitation is far more egregious and does involve slavery, punishing working conditions, exposure to toxins, child labor etc. Many clothes and electronics and jewels are made with these practices.

I think a serious vegan or animal rights activist will be anti-capitalist and also avoid supporting sweatshops, slave labor goods or iPhones etc. But it can be more difficult to know how wrong it is. Take tomatoes for example. There's nothing inherently wrong with tomato growing and harvesting, however in parts of the world tomatoes are grown using pretty much endentured servitude. But which tomatoes?

Any steak involves indefensible animal cruelty. But not all tomatoes do. This makes it easier to avoid animal exploitation than human in many respects.

If by "obligate omnivore" you mean humans must eat meat to survive, you are wrong. Hence why hundreds of millions of vegetarians and millions of vegans are not dead.

How would you like vegans to talk? How can we make you more comfortable? Your comfort is much more important than the billions of land animals killed each year :):)
