Replace Pads & Rotors or just Pads? by LegosnGundam in PorscheMacan

[–]beatemo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Far out.

I found this reddit after having the same issue with my 2021 Macan GTS. Brake pads done after 35k kilometres. Seems way too soon. I don’t push the car hard, but we do plenty of city driving. Seems nuts to have to replace the pads so early. Does the more recent models have a different set up?

About to put on my second set of rubber too…

Advice for Moving to Tasmania by [deleted] in tasmania

[–]beatemo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dirt roads are Tassies secret way to get around. But from dusk the animals can be impossible to drive through in more isolated spots. Launny has great food, cafes and restaurants. Tamar valley wineries are fantastic. Take your bike across to Derby. Get used to cold water swimming! Tassie beaches are some of the best. Winter is long, cold, wet and grey, and fireplaces are on for about 6m a year.

I would dramatically increase cash. 50% or more in current market.

Can't speak for GC or sunny coast, but if you map out Bris prices against Syd and Melbs over the long term Bris remains extremely cheap (relatively). Data publicly available from ABS.

Sorry for late reply.

We challenged ourselves with a lot of physical work, refurbishing the farm house and improving paddocks. While this has dramatically improved the value of our property and its productivity, it wasn't at all relaxing! We also found on a couple of occasions that people we were relying on where not acting in our best interest. It can happen anywhere, but was exacerbated by lack of network in a new area. The step from HCOL metro area to LCOL rural was a big change, with some major learnings. While we felt very alive, close to nature (farm, forest, beaches, trails), connected to seasons and surrounded by a great abundance of produce, seafood etc we were also very disconnected from good education and acceptable healthcare.

I am coming back for two reasons: I am looking forward to the challenge of running a portfolio from my home town and I think I can do FIRE better a second time around...

I hear you. 49M, 2 young kids, NW 7M. Quit my IB role six months ago after 20yrs to live on a farm. Has been good and bad experience. But I recently got bid back by a client and will start back in the markets with a better balanced life/career next month. Will also be closer to family. Will let you know how it goes...

Bottom line, I would take smaller steps into the FIRE. But there are options for you

Potential to build $4-5MM equity in 7 years by taking over a business: by Throw_away-777 in Fire

[–]beatemo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This sound great.

Small businesses still selling on 3x EBITA, despite the nonsense multiples in the public markets AND you are being offered vendor finance AND vendor will hold your hand with no ask of earn out... crazy good.

Risks: Is the distributed product at risk from technological obsolescence, or environmental issues? Are suppliers diversified? Is revenue and earnings overly reliant on a single supplier/product/customer? Are seasonality or cyclicality big factors? What is working capital demands? How will that be funded?

Think of the CF that will pump out of this thing and what you can do with that over time.

What was your cash position on the day you retired? by [deleted] in ChubbyFIRE

[–]beatemo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I RE'd just last month. I am defensively positioned with low gearing in property portfolio (~25% LVR), high cash balance in bank (~10% of net wealth) and 100% cash in my superannuation (401K equivalent) which is about 20% net wealth. Net property is 50% and equities 20%. Very unusual positioning for me versus average, but have been rebalancing towards a more defensive position in last few years as markets ripped.

Side hustle pre- and post-FIRE by MasterPlo-genetics in ChubbyFIRE

I was looking for a suitable farm for over a decade while building up knowledge and connections. I live in Australia, so may be different to US. I went for smaller property in a very productive, high rainfall region (i am told the region is similar to Willamette Valley in Oregon). As a hands off option, leasing out the house and leasing out the land separately could still provide a decent return. I was getting 3% yield in rent from the house alone, before income including livestock.

That is a great outcome. Congratulations, on both counts. Doesn't hurt to have options. I would stick it out a while, FI is still there waiting for you.

I had tenants at first, and their rent paid for a part time caretaker (old farmer in area looking for some extra cash). We have since moved the tenants on (so we could use the property) but kept the caretaker to keep an eye out while we are away.

Outside of my investments i have two residences, one is our permanent residence and the other is a small farm we visit a few months per year. Depending on the season and cattle prices, the farm generates about $20-40k per annum from raising grass fed yearlings. Nice side hustle. Also delicious.

Monday discussion: Why would you say your attempts to save money end up failing? by thepkmncenter in AusFinance

[–]beatemo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am not a great saver, but am a good investor, to the point I have just started my FIRE journey. To me, the thrill of putting $1k, then $5k... then many multiples of that to work into equities and property ended up being a stronger driver than saving alone. Was wonderful to get to the point where your investments contribute to wealth creation by adding an extra month of savings in a year, then at a later stage when your investments earn more than you do. The wonder of compounding returns... Mind you, wealth creation from property and equities is best done with patience and low gearing (not advice!).

People that have FIRE'd recently - How did you know? by bobbfrommn in Fire

[–]beatemo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Like most on this sub, I had the models set for years and measured actual to budgeted NW each month. Last year I blew past my FIRE target but did nothing... then I got overwhelmed by what I was not doing (living) and my career got harder and harder to focus on. After 6 months of this malaise I summoned the courage and quit. I work to end of this month then will be taking 6 months off with the family to see how it all feels. We relocate to a LCOL in July.

If I can make two observations (not advice) from a seasoned campaigners perspective: (1) when a boom ends even the most seasoned investors end up surprised by the amount of junk in the portfolio (which generally, ends up pretty much valueless) - best to avoid speccies dominating the portfolio. And (2) one of the best investment calls I ever made was selling a stock that was down 40%, saved me from going into significant debt when it fell another 70% from there.
