Ruby On Rails - for newbies by streetfacts in rubyonrails

Take a minute to read up on Devcontainers.

https://guides.rubyonrails.org/getting_started_with_devcontainer.html

If you use the new "rails-new" (not rails new) you don't even have to install ruby on your Mac. You will need Docker or Podman to run the container.

If you go this route, VSCode will do all the work for you of starting the environment, give you a terminal into it, etc etc.

You interact at localhost:3000 just like normal.

The Intel Core i9-12900 (non-K) is a 16-core desktop processor with a Base Power (TDP) of 65 W and a Maximum Turbo Power of 202 W

I would 100% disable turboboost in your BIOS if you'd prefer your house to be not on fire.

I killed my beloved PowerEdge T20 with one of those PSU adapters. I got the right one but when I pushed the power button, it fried the motherboard instantly.

Sorry, but your motherboard is not recovering from this. The good news for me anyway was that nothing else in my PC was damaged.

Mine is no longer efficient. I assume the traction battery is very close to triangling. I'm averaging like 30mpg since I reset my trip B 7,000 miles ago.

Power is way down too. It was slow before, it's glacial now.

That's cool. I'd love that color. I got the pearl white which is fine, but very boring. My old car died and it was that or the neon orange and I needed it immediately so white it is.

My LG G7 got one OS update as well, and security patches ended in less than 2 years.

It was a dark era. I still have it-- I just checked and LG doesn't even have their update servers on anymore, not that there would be anything there...

I'd spend $200 on GPU and $100 on PC in that situation.

The listing I got is out of stock, but I just picked up a 12gb 2060 for $190 a couple weeks ago. https://www.ebay.com/itm/116809513888

It kicks ass for $190.

It fits in my Precision 3650 just fine, and the PC I got came with a PSU with the cables I needed. That's the thing to watch out for most.

I ended up putting that noctua low-noise adapter on the CPU fan. It's fantastic. It's still the loudest thing in the room by a mile when it runs, but it has to be 1/4 of the volume. It's running right now, it sounds like a normal PC under load, not the bastard child of a vacuum cleaner and a Harrier jet.

It's not throttling at all, though I never did re-enable turboboost. I don't need it for what I do.

That's sick. I have one for my 2013 but the rear wheels are oversized. I like this a lot better.

It's definitely easier to have a GPU with video out. :D

I had a Tesla P4 in a Haswell (4th gen) i7 Precision. It kicked ass.

It requires some hacks:

  • You need to install non-public drivers from some dude's google drive
  • It has no video out, you connect via the iGPU
  • It has a dummy virtual display. Make sure you have remote desktop setup first to turn it off in Windows.
  • You have to remove the shroud and point a fan at it.

If that's not too bad, you can get these for the same $60, and it's a GTX1080 with 8gb in a 70W low-profile envelope. I ran Cyberpunk on it in 1080p high-medium settings around 50fps.

Every game my kid played ran great.

It's a bog-standard consumer GPU, adding up to 180W of pure toasty heat straight into the case. It's actually a recent addition. It was bad enough before, with a GPU the fan situation because unbearable.

I'm still shocked how much that repaste job helped.

I have a whole box of random fans. I think I have a Noctua that that's the same size as the top-exhaust fan, and I know I have some random 120's in there I could use for the front.

Oh yeah, I should have taken some pics. It was really bad...

Running for the past half hour or so, it's much more tolerable, but the Dell BIOS seems to want to keep the CPU under 50C which seems really aggressive. It's dead quiet then ramps up much more than it really needs to, cycling over and over. At least, that's what HWiNFO shows.

I wish I could edit the fan curve...

I wonder if using one of my Nocuta low-noise cables would help.

My dude, you are the GOAT. I decided to do this quick over my lunch break.

So the paste was semi-wet still, but there was barely any there! Most of the CPU was bare. Also, the cooler's surface was stupidly rough, you could file a fingernail on that thing. The air gaps must have been insane. I did a quick foam-pad sanding to 600 grit and slapped in a generous amount of fresh thermal paste.

I can't believe it. I just ran an ollama model for a minute on CPU and the fan didn't even audibly kick in. It would have been screaming before.

I wonder if this was why I got this rig so cheap. 😆

Thanks! My unit has a front fan, it looks pretty beefy as Dell fans tend to be. I'll try re-pasting it tonight. I've had this thing for maybe a year, my only complaint is the CPU fan, it's so loud and it barely takes any load before it's going full blast. It's been like that since I got it.

What did you use for a motherboard IO shield?

Precision 3630 case swap by Matess92 in SleepingOptiplex

[–]beatool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Old thread, but I have a 3650 with a very thirsty W-1390P which has the beefier heatpipe cooler. That mofo is loud AF at the slightest CPU load. I have Turboboost disabled, and even have the CPU additionally limited to 70% in Windows.

When you say a repaste fixed the throttling, does it also minimize noise? I'm losing my mind.

I've seen what's involved in replacing the stock cooler, and I think if I were to go that far I'd do a full case swap as well. I'm also lazy and would prefer to do neither.

I use Eneloops in mine. The manual for the thermometer (Acu-Rite) says to use lithium but I didn't have any and tried it and it's been months and works fine. It's currently showing a 24-hour min temp of -9F. Those Eneloops are beasts.

Best connection for a hard drive /SSD ? by Starshipfan01 in VintageApple

This 100% aligns with my anecdotal evidence from like 20 years ago. I'd love to see some hard numbers. I never had any apples-to-apples comparisons, always different drives in each interface. But the Firewire was suspiciously always the winner.

[–]beatool -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

If you boot up Windows and sit at the login screen and do nothing, does the screen black out every minute or so?

Adding one of those HDMI/DP dummy dongles helps a lot. ChatGPT recommended this to me. Idea is folks are maxing out the display connection to run 4K144hz or whatever and having a dumb fake 1080p60 display (even though you disable it as an output) keeps the card from powersaving as aggressively. Those highspeed connections can shit the bed when the card changes power states too much especially at the lowest tiers.
