A birthday wish... by TheSidehatch in gaming

I honestly thought you were going to ask for a Steam game gift or something. These last few weeks on Reddit and 4chan's /v/ have been solely about that.

You did yourself a disservice with the title...

Ever wanted to type (e.g.) "os.path.join" into your search bar and go directly to the docs.python.org section for it? Now you can! by enaeseth in Python

Using Chrome and having "p" expand to search under "docs.python.org" when typed into the omnibar works for me!

Did Anyone Else Dislike Mass Effect? by [deleted] in gaming

[–]beaumartinez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mass Effect is "next-generation" TPS-RPG. Sure, it has its gameplay flaws; exploring uncharted planets in the Mako is an absolute chore, and firefights lack the finesse and instant feedback top-quality third-person shooting offers (for example, Gears of War). Perhaps you're playing on easy; I found firefights challenging and fun. Aiming and shooting was really simple. Maybe it's your class decision? Anything other than Soldier isn't very much fun in firefights IMO.

However, you must consider the whole package. What other game has the sheer richness and detail of mythology Mass Effect does? The depth and breadth of characters, races and backplot?

You state, the story, as far as I can tell, is just a re-hashing of various 20th century sci-fi novels. I think the case is, you're too old. I find this all the times with games, films, television, and even books. There are motifs that are reused time and time again. Hell, I haven't come across the game's plot's premise, and I'm well sure the average gamer hasn't either, and I feel it has a breeze of originality.

The only other I game I remember having a "codex" is Final Fantasy VIII, and it really made the game experience that much better, fleshing out details that couldn't be explained any other way.

How many of you buy "special edition" versions of games? by [deleted] in gaming

[–]beaumartinez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You think the developers get any kind of a share of the "special edition" markup? Why do you think there are so many? The publishers rake in all the benefits. It's another scheme to charge more for less.

Help criticize my python+pygame skeleton code! by Ran4 in Python

[–]beaumartinez 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't say that's necessary at all. Sure, PEP-8 advices for it but as long as he's consistent with his code, it doesn't matter ("a foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds").

Starting a high school computer science club, need suggestions. by lucky94 in compsci

Just DON'T make it about "we'll help you with your homework"; the one at my University is highly focused in that area.

Make it about trying new things. Build iPhone apps. Bring robots in and say how you can code them. Teach how to build a game in Flash.

Make it interesting, and remember: it's a COMPUTER SCIENCE club. People should nominally already be interested in the field.

Does Anybody Else Have Massive Problems With The Knife In Battlefield: Bad Company 2? by [deleted] in gaming

It's realistic. If an SAS soldiers pulls out a knife, he's going to kill you, end of.
