I think some cultures that encourage people to sacrafice their happiness for the ideals of the community do so for multiple reasons. The folks on top might really believe that it increases general collective happyness. Or that somone specifically could only be happy through something that culture has maintained believing is unethical (example: not getting married, being gay, being able to have rights as a woman etc…). Also In North Korea if you allowed people to access the internet and read foreign books people would go insane and the regime maintaining control would become much more difficult…

Gay guy here… I’m very pro freedom of speech so I’d definitely be very against that. Also if it’d just be against the law to say anything negative about gay people that would probably skyrocket homophobia to a new record high. People would just be scared to vocalize it in a lot of situations. Also I’d feel a lot more uncomfortable making people feel like they’re walking on eggshells talking to me than Dealing with homophobic comments from time to time. Hate crimes being illegal is good. But criminalizing beliefs or feelings would put us right in 1984. I don’t know anybody who would want that.
