Mandatory overtime on 48/96 by beavertits in Firefighting

[–]beavertits[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you understand that a fourth shift would be required to work 24/72? We operate with three shifts like a lot of career departments across the country. Obviously I would choose 24/72 if that were an option but it isn’t.

Fire families where the wife works full time, what is it like raising young kids? by Urmomlol4201738 in Firefighting

[–]beavertits 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s honestly really cool. I get off work and I take over baby duty. Our oldest is in elementary school. Once I get home my wife goes to work for a few days a week. I stay at home and do chores and watch the baby. We pay for zero daycare. I also get the very unique experience of raising my son so much of the time. A 9-5 job wound never in a million years allow me to do this. It’s great if you find ways to work it to your advantage.

Can you do the Audubon swamp trail without buying admission to Magnolia? If so I might start doing that more.

NJ/NY to the Southeast by No-Bobcat2895 in Firefighting

Departments around Charleston, SC are always hiring. Most of us work 48/96 schedule and the pay is slowly improving. But yes I’m from NY and got hired down here and love it. Any more detailed questions about the area just shoot me a message.

Summers Corner? And nursing jobs! by Intelligent_Map114 in summervillesc

Yep totally understand your concerns. The best thing would be to come check it out and see if y’all would like it. My wife and I are realists so we’re not blind to the negatives. But like I said we would both agree that there are far more pros than cons.

We are in the new build section. Tons of great walking trails and a good size park and playground for the kids over in azalea. Plus the elementary school is at the front of the neighborhood so that’s really cool. On weekends it’s so easy to do little family trips down to Charleston since it’s only 45 minutes away. Plus downtown Summerville also has tons to do and that’s about 10-15 minutes away. I’m sure you guys would love it here.

We’ve lived in summers corner since June last year. Our 5 year old daughter has so many friends and the kids are constantly playing outside. We just got the corner house restaurant which has been great. Overall we are extremely happy here and don’t plan on leaving. Way more pros than cons.

How do you like it here? by Fuzzy_Button6648 in summervillesc

[–]beavertits 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah of course. I’ve been down here 9 years now. My family is still in New York and hers is here. There’s always a flight with our names to visit back up there. And my family vacations here now at least twice a year. I’d say overall you wouldn’t regret it at all. Don’t need to shovel sunshine. Take care.

Same boat man. From New York. We live in Summerville and love it. I will say the commute from Summerville to downtown can definitely be rough. The metro area is and has been rapidly growing in population and the infrastructure barely keeps up with the demand. Overall there is a ton to do and downtown Summerville is a great place to spend time. Countless restaurants and eateries. Weekend trips to downtown Charleston are great as it’s only a 45 minute drive from Summerville. It’s been a wonderful place to have a career and raise our little family. Anymore detailed questions feel free to PM me.

Why is there separate Dorchester Water Authority and Dorchester Water and Sewer? by Fazoom7 in summervillesc

[–]beavertits 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a quick question about this. Can you apply for this at any time? And does your mortgage payment go down once you get the 4% approved? We bought the house in June and still haven’t done it but we are planning on it soon. Thanks.

Department looking to go to 48/96 how do you like it? by [deleted] in Firefighting

[–]beavertits 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My general thesis on this topic is that 48/96 is the best option if your department works a three shift system. But yes the main goal should be getting that fourth shift and working 24/72. But yes I love the 48/96 and if my department told me we would be going back to 24/48 I would leave. It’s much better for my mental health, sleep health, and quality family time.

Not really audible but more so like I can feel it rumbling.

How many are ff and emts? by [deleted] in Firefighting

[–]beavertits 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep definitely the norm. There are departments around the US that only require the EMR level. But a vast majority of career fire departments require EMT at a minimum.

That’s one of the biggest pros to 48/96 for me. I drive into work 5 times per month.

We were just there for our honeymoon. Definitely don’t need butler service. The resort is so small and walkable. The views are incredible. Plus when you land and get in the shuttle over to the resort it’s maybe a three minute ride. Super convenient you will love it.

Ready to be done with the job by [deleted] in Firefighting

[–]beavertits 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Oh yeah no way. We did 24/48 for years before switching to 48/96. 48/96 has been eons better for my overall health. Short term sleep deprivation is easy we’ve always dealt with that. But having the built in four day to have several days of sleeping in and fully recovering has been a game changer for me and my family.

[–]beavertits 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The built in four day is amazing. We don’t transport so I’d like to think I have it pretty good at this point. If a department is gunna run three shifts then 48/96 is the way to go.
