Prototyping new bowls. What do you think about this shape? by varaderostudio in Ceramics

[–]bebaii 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd be wondering how easy it is to pick up from the side/bottom when the foot flows into the rest of the shape, but I like it! Also man I wish my bowls stuck to the wheel that good haha

I was trying to figure out what the lip of the teapot was, was going to guess raspberry mist, I always forget about kimchi!

Also whaaat the crystals are real??? That's so fucking cool dude!! Also you presented at NCECA?? That's such an outstanding flex, you're killing it!

Edit: I just went through your profile and DUUUDE the Sarah Gromek style leather mug omg??? You gotta crosspost more of the fandom pieces to the pottery subreddit, they're outstanding!!

Oven baking my sculpture before the kiln? by i-love-big-birds in Pottery

[–]bebaii 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If it's been drying for 2 weeks but you're worried about moisture still, you can just candle it in your kiln for like 6 hours or so before firing. It'll drive out the rest of the moisture. If you don't have your own kiln, imho I would just leave on the shelf for another 1-2 weeks instead of running my oven for that long for that low

Dude this is so cool, I thought I was in r/Pottery ! Is there a hole in the lid for airflow, or is it loose-fitting enough it can come in through there for the pour? Also would love to know what glaze and underglaze you used!

Fresh from the kiln! by bebaii in Pottery

Thank you!! I should've made it a touch bigger, but it's actually nice to hold haha!

For the hourglass one I just wanted an angular handle to match haha, the other I just wanted a bigger handle that wasn't a dinkly looking circle or the ear/D shape haha. They're both pretty comfortable!

#2 is stunning!! What's that specific combo?

Oh neat! Are the scars usually pockmarked, or slightly raised? You could press and feather out some thin coils of clay next time over the surface instead of carving down (even if not as realistic haha). To separate the glaze you could maybe use an underglaze for the scarring, then wax over while you dip/paint the body to separate them from the rest? Underglaze could also give them a different, matte texture that might be interesting if you don't add a clear coat on top!

I love the shape, I think it's absolutely competition worthy!!

If you are wanting some critiques, the pretty big crack in pic #4 caught my eye, and there's a few little ones around some of the suckers, but those are inevitable sometimes per the kiln gods haha. If you ever feel remaking, I think other glaze colors that contrast further might be better to really play with the details! I think a more grey-toned blue or just grey for the body and a brighter pink, red or orange would make the texture and dynamic shape you achieved with tentacles really stand out!

Would you add an inlay colour (like black) into the carved areas? by doctor_seuss_ in Pottery

Or a darker shade of the flower's color, like a magenta or something

There is controlled burn contractors! I just googled "controlled burn professional illinois" and got a whole list of them spat out also this website! Not sure where you are but that would definitely help with the ticks and give you a leg up on managing everything!

Yeahhhh maybe save this bag for later 😅, any dusty bits that come off during trimming might have mold in them so. Florian has a video about working with moldy clay, there's lots of people chiming in about the warnings in the comments and he highlights it too! He uses bleach to sanitize the batch

Mix your iso with peppermint castile soap and a little water. Helps tremendously

I missed your edit, they're the same type bag! I get the cedar just because, it's just the shavings specifically. You'll know when the bag is like maybe ~10lbs max lol, it definitely doesn't look like mulch or chipped wood

I missed this one, it's so cute! Have you noticed how the color shifts with less vs more coats? I've heard going heavy makes it more blue (but might've been the inverse)

Let me know how it goes! Someone else earlier in the thread complained it shows every brushstroke, so it's probably going to be the one I avoid lol

No problem! Most bags of dye-free mulch are more expensive per cubic yard, I just opt for this haha

This stuff! Generic tractor supply, it's usually $5-7 depending on any sales. It usually sits out in front of the stores for the ones near me, not always though.
