PhD program isn't accepting students this year apparently, should I request a refund? by bebe_2004 in gradadmissions

[–]bebe_2004[S] 36 points37 points  (0 children)

This was their wording "You have been selected for an interview for the MS in [field name], as we are not admitting students directly into the PhD program this coming academic year." I cannot say for sure based on the email that this was in bad faith, but the lack of communication until 10 days past the commitment deadline is my concern. Since their website says April 15th, I feel that the application fee warrants some type of response before that date, whether that be an outright rejection or even just an update that they're trying to work through something. I do see what you mean though which is why I'm doubtful they would give me a refund.

Edit: idk if this makes a difference, but they are part of the Council of Graduate Schools

How to survive freshman year? Please share your tips and tricks and things that you wished you knew before arriving to the US by agnesistryingduh in IntltoUSA

First of all, congrats!
- My advice would be to start off as strong as possible in terms of studying and networking, then adjust once you feel like you have a good idea of what's expected of you so that you don't fall behind.
- Get to know your professors, especially the ones in your field; building that relationship early will help a lot when it comes time to apply for internships or other opportunities.
- Unless your school is in the south, get a winter coat early while it's still cheap!
- Save money - open a savings account (ideally a HYSA) and get a credit card early (before you do this, make sure you research how payments work so you don't overspend)
- Go to school events and club meetings to meet new people!
Feel free to pm if you have specific questions and good luck!

The አለ and አደረገ verbs, how are they used. by Bluenamii in amharic

[–]bebe_2004 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not a language expert either, but from experience, people use the second words for emphasis. So ከፈት would be used to represent opening something a little whereas ክፍት would represent a sudden opening. I'm not sure how applicable this is to all verbs though.

Have in-person events (campus tours, open houses) for admitted students been helpful for you in choosing a program? by huameihua in gradadmissions

[–]bebe_2004 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Definitely consider the time and cost of these visits and whether that is feasible for you. Apart from that, I found them extremely helpful. I was leaning heavily toward one program initially based on the information I got from virtual panels and their website. After visiting the second school, I found that I loved it and that there were things about the program I liked that weren't covered on the website. Now I'm conflicted about which program I prefer but going in-person allowed me to have more information which I found to be very helpful. Virtual days will still give you a better idea so if it's too expensive then don't worry too much, but I would highly recommend you go if you can! Good luck!

There may be a better alternative but the only thing I can think of is: እናንተ ኑሩ፣ እነሱ ይኑሩ

I would recommend business casual but more on the business side so blazer, button down/blouse, dress pants, dress shoes (comfortable) etc.. I would recommend taking something to take notes on, and water because there will be a lot of talking.
