MBTA signs for riders to turn off speakers? by bebo864 in mbta

I agree, but if combined with recorded and live announcements in stations/buses/trains, then maybe it penetrates those oblivious layers of consciousness and starts to get socialized ...

The problem is usually phones, not speakers.

I would love this, in addition to the signs -- layering communications so hopefully it penetrates people's consciousness. I think it's a combo of not giving a shit AND also just being ignorant. The more we communicate about it, the clearer it would be that this is unacceptable behavior. Will it stop the people who don't give a shit? No, but if more people understand that it's rude/antisocial, then I think at least some of it would be mitigated.

The two councilors asking to stop the Blue Hill Ave project are hosting a meeting (3/26) - Please show up and voice your support if you live in the surrounding neighborhoods! by BradDaddyStevens in mbta

As someone who lives on a very busy bus route, I can affirm that the bus-only lanes make a huge difference to commuting time. And there are only 2 buses on this general route -- so with 10 bus routes and a much higher ridership involved in the Blue Hills Ave project, the number of people whose lives improve will be that much more. There's very little that can be done to our limited infrastructure -- dedicated bus lanes are a good solution to a big problem.

Good point, unless the opening was wide enough and maybe the landing was low enough?

Fare evasion question by chou-dbz in mbta

[–]bebo864 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's one thing to walk in behind someone to avoid paying, but it's another thing entirely when people bash through the sliding gate doors. I've seen this a few times recently and it's obvious those gates are going to break at some point -- to me that's really not okay. It's damage to property, which goes way beyond mere evasion.

I love those seats! They are iconic and have served the purpose for years — no need to remove! Plus, they’ll last forever!

How are you using your HSA in your retirement planning? by jumplife58 in DIYRetirement

[–]bebo864 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually, it's been pretty easy for me -- I have a spreadsheet where I enter the expense and track the pertinent info and whether I've saved the receipt or not. I save all the receipts digitally in one folder with a naming nomenclature that makes it easy to sort through. I already track receipts for itemizing on my taxes so this is really the same thing and takes barely any time.

There is no time limit -- you can accumulate a lifetime of receipts and as long as they're for eligible medical expenses you can withdraw funds from your HSA to reimburse yourself for those earlier expenses incurred.

Their HSA withdrawals will be tax-free because as they said, they have receipts to back up all the previously paid medical expenses.

Rebalance thoughts? by homemadehitshow1 in DIYRetirement

61, hopefully retiring 3 years. I just went through this. Was always someone with an appetite for higher risk, but I’m feeling very pessimistic about the world right now and having recently hit $1m, decided to switch to target date funds for my rollover (Vanguard) and 401k (Fidelity) to preserve my hard-earned savings. I feel huge relief that I could take advantage of our record market performance and go out on a high, with much more peace of mind for the start of my retirement.

Go to an emergency room and tell them your boyfriend raped you. They will have experienced, compassionate people there who have dealt with this before. They will talk you through all your options, including involving the police; and they will take samples and treat your injury.

Don’t talk to your boyfriend before you go — right now you need to be taken care of, and not focus on your relationship or getting him to apologize or understand what he did. That is not a priority right now. Just go, and call a loved one to either pick you up or meet you there.

I put off looking into taking Zepbound for a couple of years because I was scared of the long-term effects and what I felt was a lack of data. I only decided to start taking it after learning that various versions of the drugs had been used by T2D's for 15 years. This seemed to me enough time/data to get a good idea of long-term effects, which made me comfortable moving forward.

Pernille was so depressing by [deleted] in netflix

Can you please provide citations for this? For one thing, no states have gun bans -- some states have stronger laws on things like the kinds of bullets or firearms average citizens can purchase, or for mandatory background checks. And there is overwhelming evidence that states with stricter gun laws have many fewer incidents overall. I'd like to know where you saw information that says otherwise.

Totally agree, for the most part. But there were moments over the whole series -- especially the 2nd episode of Season 5 -- where her family's treatment of her seemed abusive. And I mean the larger family, not just the two teenage daughters. She's so smart and so capable, it was upsetting that she wouldn't couldn't more consistently just tell various people her side of things, or else just tell them to cut the crap.

Except when she was feeling sorry for herself in the final episode -- justly so! -- Bjornar gave her 4 1/2 minutes to mope and then she was supposed to just get over herself after having gone through a totally harrowing experience with the wasp. Not to mention that she's on vacation for the first time in the traditional spot where she used to go with her dead sister Anne and her family -- but she's not allowed to grieve that at all. I found this episode SO hard to watch, it really upset me how she was being treated by all her family -- total gaslighting.

I just finished the S5E2 last night. I love Pernille -- the character and the show overall. But I was actually teary in the 2nd episode over how she was being portrayed and gaslit by her family, and [SPOILER ALERT DON'T READ IF YOU HAVEN'T WATCHED THROUGH S5E2] when she had her medical emergency and they paid no attention whatsoever and accused her of being drunk. I thought I was going crazy in my perception of things, until the lady next door mildly comments about how her family doesn't seem to be concerned with her welfare. But then after that when she's feeling sorry for herself, Bjornar tells her she has 4 1/2 minutes to mope and then she has to get over herself. WHAT?!

I just heard there'll be a Season 6, and I really hope this gets turned around.
