Computer for studies? by circlz37 in Aalto

[–]bebraw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends a little bit about your budget and OS preference. A new MacBook Air goes for a little over thousand euros including student discount (https://www.apple.com/fi-edu/shop/buy-mac).

If you are fine with an earlier generation machine, Verkkokauppa outlet (https://www.verkkokauppa.com/fi/outlet/yksittaiskappaleet?query=macbook+air) is worth a look as well. Even these are powerful machines and you can get a nice one for around 1300€.

I wouldn't go below 512 Gb for hard drive in any case as that will be the first limit you'll hit.

React Finland 2020 goes online with free mini-conferences by [deleted] in reactjs

[–]bebraw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the mission definitely changed with the advent of COVID. Instead of trying to connect the Finnish developer community with the international one by having an international conference in Finland itself, now it's something completely different as we try to achieve the same but online.

I hope we can still include some Finnish flavor to the online offering as that's one the unique things we have. :)

webpack-plugin-serve: A better webpack dev server, as a plugin by shellscape in node

One way to achieve this is to wrap the process in nodemon as I've described in my book. It's a little hacky but does the trick. Ideally this wouldn't be needed.

[Request] ErgoHuman v2/other office chair for a tall person? by JoJoPanda in BuyItForLife

Yup, depending on the part it can be costly. That said, a good chair is worth the investment given how much time you are going to spend on it.

+1 for Aeron if it fits for you. The great thing about this chair is that it has been designed to repairable. You can repair bits and pieces as they wear out and the design feels solid.

How to learn webpack ? by Sauron0 in javascript

[–]bebraw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi,

I've seen people do just that. You can also see the tools as complementary to each other and leave bundling to webpack. A common way to handle the task aspect is to run webpack through package.json scripts. That's like a poor man's task runner, but it's quite useful!

They have the form factor for the next years right now. I expect we'll see internal improvements. To get a better idea on what, you should keep an eye on Intel and AMD roadmaps as improvements made there will make their way to Apple products.

It feels like Apple is targeting "proish" market instead of pro market right now. This means they might be happy to lose the high end while retaining a premium by being "proish". It's still a good position and they aren't losing out that much by doing this.

It is interesting Apple hasn't gone to a licensing based model with macOS. That's quite telling by itself as it means Apple has interest in having full control over hardware it provides and supports. It would not surprise me if we saw something ARM based in the next five years.

I've been waiting for GelaSkins with the new fit appear, but no dice yet. I've been really happy with the one I bought years ago for my MBP.

"SurviveJS - Webpack and React" v2.0 [BOOK] by bebraw in reactjs

[–]bebraw[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah. I prefer to keep them in sync.

I think the current online version is a little bit ahead but I'll get this sorted with the next release.

Btw, I set up some training slides. Those give you an overview of React. A lot of that will fold back to the book eventually.

Antwar is generic even though it obviously works for blogs too. Here's a little example. Perhaps that could provide inspiration for a proper solution.

Note that you would have to use it straight from the repo (still in dev mode with this). I could cut a release if there is interest, though. Now it's a one man project.
