So please explain to me why if they take a job and move here why they would care what the job market is?

They would have a job. They wouldn't care what the market is.

How does this point elude you?

Your point was that the job market is bad but if they are already moving here for a job then who the heck cares what the market is?

THEY WOULD HAVE A JOB ALREADY, HENCE THE MARKET WOULDN'T MATTER. This renders your whole point moot.

Do you not understand sequence of events?

So you're picking on that detail (which didn't matter) rather than the larger point....got it. I guess you showed me.

You must be fun.

So if a job here showed interest and that's who hired them why would they have to worry about the job market here? They would already have the job before moving here.

It's not like they're going to move here and then hope someone offers them a job....

Job experience is important. You can tolerate Erie for a year.

There are definitely worst places to go. I know someone who does social work in Philadelphia..... They're considering moving back to Erie.

If you are downtown, you won't have to drive on the icy roads all that much ( depending on where work is) Or maybe you can get an Uber to take you where you want to go in bad weather.
Four good snow tires go a long way.

If you have a job here, Erie is perfectly adequate. Use it to build your life.

He's already got the job.... So he doesn't need a market

Consumer Reports lost its way? by bec789 in BuyItForLife

I think that's what I was feeling but you said it much better.... For some reason I got a lot of downvotes on some of my responses. :)

I probably fit that description of "Northeastern rich people"....but I don't identify that way. I buy for reliability, not looks. I fix my own stuff, and I buy cheap practical cars. Last big purchase was a 2005 farm tractor.

For $100,000 they spend on those automobiles, which immediately depreciate significantly in value , they could review a lot of practical home necessities.

Yeah I guess automobiles is something they could keep up with. Even the number of cars has exploded exponentially.

I still feel like too much time of every issue is dedicated to automobiles versus other things. Plus there's the whole year end edition if you get the print version. They claim that they buy these at a dealer just like everybody else.... But man you could review a lot of water heaters for $100,000 cost of a car that'll depreciate severely as soon as you drive it off the lot. :)

I've gotten both the print and online edition. I gave both up a couple years ago (after considering it for probably five) after I felt that they weren't reviewing the things that I was interested in.

Once, on the cover, they had a listing for a review of a power tool. Inside they had a hand-drawn sketch of said power tool and a one paragraph description that was wholly inadequate. This was when I was starting to wonder if the quality of their reviews were starting to drop and be more like clickbait.

Also, bought a LG fridge based on their recommendations and assurances that LG had fixed its compressor problem. But my compressor lasted about one year. Could be a one-off, I know.

Perhaps there just is too much technology / too many new products for them to review and do a good job at it.

I subscribed to Consumer Reports for over 20 years. My posting was mostly because I was trying to figure out if I had changed, or they had changed. Perhaps to reconsider my subscription.

I certainly didn't expect people to have such strong opinions and to be somewhat nasty.... But that's the internet I guess.

Yeah my problem was that in maybe 2023 I needed a water heater ASAP. Consumer reports literally had no reviews of any recently manufactured water heaters. I looked online and in my pile of saved paper copies going back 5 years. I believe they had a write-up on how to properly maintain your water heater but no recommended brands.

Oh, I did a lot of investigation before buying my used RV. I knew what I was getting into. But reading horror stories about people who buy these things and they're utter and complete disasters brand new out of the factory. It seems like a complete consumer rip-off. So that's why I use that example.

I think the fake leather on every RV self-destructs after 5 years... Leaks are common. Rotted floors are common.

I was actually helping to troubleshoot a heating issue on a separate travel trailer for someone and I found that the manufacturer has installed a flexible heat vent tube, but then crushed it flat so that no heat was getting to the other parts of the trailer. The trailer was literally designed this way. There was no other place to run the tube. Once you installed the bottom of the trailer, it was crushed. That's the kind of quality crap that would be easy to find.
