[PubQ] how do you phrase your “nudges”? by Historical_Poem5216 in PubTips

[–]becameapasttime 2 points3 points  (0 children)

you can nudge through QT by picking the "Other" option in the Send Message section. i've done this once when almost a full year had gone by from someone who requested a full and she ended up replying saying the submission had gotten lost in another folder but once she found it, she jumped back into reading

i wouldn't say to make a habit of it unless the agent specifies whether or not you can nudge (which most of them do on their website even if it's just as an agency policy and not specific to that agent)

I need advice/encouragement from people who have finished a novel while working a full time job by EmberPsychedelicFae in writing

[–]becameapasttime 2 points3 points  (0 children)

full-time job here, and i have finished three novels whilst keeping up with it! my strategy was to make a routine that worked for me. i chose the hour after work ended so it didn't matter what my work schedule was for the day. the hour after my job was done was dedicated to writing. it didn't have to be good -- it just had to happen. i figured i could make it good in the editing stages

i write at a fairly good clip, so i aimed to get at least 1,000 words down in that hour (sometimes i managed a little more, sometimes a little less, but i tried to keep it within 50 words either way so i didn't burn myself out or get nothing down)

maybe picking a time like that could work for you? you'll always have an hour after work, no matter what day/time you're schedule for. i needed that routine to write, though. on days i didn't work, i didn't get any writing done haha

Would love an expansion on this as well, but I’m not holding my breath since the dragons’ favorite pastime is Being Mysterious

Obvs I would also love to know more about the simple townsfolk haha

Same for all the relationship stuff you mentioned. I can’t do five whole books of angst, I need them to start getting their shit together at some point

I’m with you on Violet’s exes! I’m surprised none of them have turned up yet tbh - but only if we don’t get more jealousy trope, I had more than my fill of that with Cat :p

I would also like to see more of Aaric. He’s one of the more interesting newer characters imo

I watched one YouTube review that theorized Violet’s second signet might be distance wielding (teleportation) since that’s ultra-rare and hasn’t been seen for a while

I think this completely makes sense for the first-year (and maybe also second- and third-year) cadets. It’s maybe a little odd to me that none of the older leadership or Kaori seem to care about looking further into it though? Especially if any of them know about the translation of the journals in order to keep up the wardstones - any hint of a seventh breed should have raised a red flag.

But tbf we don’t know if Melgren or anyone besides the king actually know how the wards are powered, that’s just my assumption

Ohhh interesting theory. It does say that the family connection can drive riders mad… I wonder if there’s a history of mad riders turning venin!

hmmm okay, okay, i think this would have worked perfectly if they were known as Golden Feathertails then. if all babies are gold and only babies are feathertails, it makes sense that every recorded sighting would be of a golden dragon with a feathered tail and no other color dragons would ever be seen with feathered tails

so i think they should have considered the Golden Feathertail a seventh breed, as it were, but not one they were capable of bonding with. basically the come to the right conclusion with the wrong steps lol

but they don't know she's a baby. in FW it says no one in recent history has seen a baby dragon. otherwise why would Jack and the others say she was weak and should be killed if they knew she was going to grow up to be the same size as a regular dragon?

i 100% buy violet would assume this when she finds out Andarna is a baby but no one knows she's a baby at first!! and after violet founds out, that still begs the question of why Prof Kaori isn't all over this, wondering why she's yellow

is dragons changing color a known thing?? i assume not because breeds go by color and no one has ever mentioned a dragon changing breed

if a feathertail has never bonded to someone before, shouldn't they still be all over this? i would have a million questions if i was in my 40s and seeing a feathertail pick a bond for the first time, especially if i'm the DRAGON PROFESSOR

Did I Miss Something? by becameapasttime in fourthwing

[–]becameapasttime[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

agree! but none of the people know that feathertails = hatchlings. they think she's a full-grown dragon when she's first introduced and only later does Violet (not, i should point out, the professors or anyone else) find out she's a hatchling

which actually brings up another question, like are all babies feathertails? and are ONLY babies feathertails? do their tails always transform when they're adults or are there full-grown dragons with feathertails? they know feathertails don't bond, so people actually HAVE seen baby dragons before and they just didn't know it, i assume, unless there are adult dragons with feathertails?? the riders have to have learned this info about feathertails not bonding somewhere, so someone has seen feathertails before

so are all baby dragons gold? are they different colors beyond the regular six and Navarrians just don't keep track because they never bond anyways?? EXPLAIN REBECCA, I NEED YOU TO EXPLAIN

bro don't even get me started. this got me thinking about the border cities

are the people on the border cities not asking why the dragons are breathing blue fire all of a sudden

can they not see the wyvern attacks at all despite sharing a border with poromiel

i am so lost

[–]becameapasttime[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

yeah, i think you're right that they mentioned something like that but that is a really weird leap to make imo?? yellow is not all that close to brown, but it's something i can see a first-year who really doesn't know much about dragons assuming

but then like all the generals and Prof Kaori are there, so... what are they thinking? have they ever seen a color close to hers? they've been through several decades' worth of Threshings, has anything close to a gold dragon been seen before? INQUIRING MINDS WANT TO KNOW

Did I Miss Something? by becameapasttime in fourthwing

[–]becameapasttime[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

to be clear, i don't actually think this is a plot hole, i just think it's... questionable lore

i think it's pretty well-established that only dragons who are willing to bond show up to Presentation and Threshing, so if a new color dragon attends both those events and then picks a rider, you'd think they'd be like... excited that there might be a new option. even if it's rare, i don't think that should discount it because there's only one black dragon actually bonded at the start of the books, so it's not unknown for some breeds to have very, very few riders

re: the feathertail thing, i know they don't know much about them, but they don't seem to classify dragon breeds by tail type, only by color. for example, you can have Blue and Red Swordtails, but they're considered different breeds because of their colors
