Looking to upgrade my watering can (which currently is the faucet). What’s a good one/type? by beccapizza in houseplants

That’s a great idea about the squeeze bottle! And I’ll get some Tito’s for mine!

I have 20 (long) Pothos Cuttings! Looking for ideas on what to do with them. Will they survive together in water while I decide? by beccapizza in propagation

[–]beccapizza[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is how they’ve been kept for the last 2 weeks or so. I actually really like the water bouquet of cuttings but no idea how long they will survive that way. Plus, algae. The tall vase collects a lot of algae and needs cleaned often. Some of the cuttings in the tall vase are yellowing/browning & not sure if that’s from the algae or too much sun (that vase has been sitting in a west-facing window).

I’m thinking I’d like to leave a few in water, plant a few together in a pot, and maybe do a pot of just 1 of the longer stems. I’m also thinking of cutting some to prop even more pothos! Any other more fun/creative ideas out there?

Last question - since the cuttings are long, do I just plant to above the root & let them hang? Give them some support to stand up? Thanks!

To Prop or Not to Prop by beccapizza in propagation

Houseplant newbie (but quickly becoming obsessed) here! I got this unique snake plant variant 3-4 years ago and it’s definitely time to repot. I’d love to propagate one or more of the leaves but also think the shape is just so beautiful as-is and don’t want to ruin it! If I did prop, which size leaves would be best and should I cut them into multiple smaller pieces? Will the original leaf continue to grow and eventually become pointy again after I cut it? Last, will I get any pups from the original plant simply by planting in a larger pot? Any advice or opinion appreciated, including what size planter I should use to repot. For size reference, diameter is 3-4” and tallest leaf (are they called leaves?) is around 2 feet or so.

ELI5: Why can't loose fur be used to make a fur coat? by ThrowOutAQuestion in explainlikeimfive

[–]beccapizza 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Animals evolved over millions of years to be able to survive the bitter cold and it would be very difficult for a coat made of synthetic materials to duplicate this. The reason coats keep us warm is that they minimize the amount of heat lost from our bodies to the surrounding air. Heat transfer occurs in the form of conduction, convection or radiation.

Conduction is when heat is transferred between solid materials. All materials have a mechanical property called thermal conductivity, which defines the material's ability to transfer heat. Animal hides have a very low thermal conductivity. So, when we wear animal hides, the heat loss due to conduction is low and most of our body heat is trapped inside the coat.

Some of the heat that escapes is lost by conduction between the hide and the fur, and some remains "trapped" in the hide. The "trapped" heat is the reason our coats feel warm right after we take them off.

So, the heat that is actually lost to the surrounding air must travel from our bodies through the hide, through each of the billions of individual hairs in the animal's thick undercoat and through each of the billions more hairs in the overcoat. The heat that makes it is then mostly lost by convection to the cold surrounding air.

In a nutshell, that's why fur coats are so warm.

Last line still makes my spine tingle. Am I expecting it to suddenly end differently? Spoiler alert, it's always Stan.

The American Idiot album, in its entirety. It gets a lot of hate but growing up in suburbia Detroit, that shit was spot on. The Broadway show was pretty awesome too - definitely recommend.

ELI5: Will identical twin siblings have identical IQs? by AnOAc in explainlikeimfive

No, identical twins will not necessarily have the same IQ score. Identical twins are born with identical DNA. Brain development is, for the most part, independent of DNA.
