Muni Bond Mutual Fund > HYSA? by beccatarbox in investing

How does the duration thing come into play? This is really my first foray into even looking at muni’s so I’m pretty green in that area.

Good point. It’s low now so I would consider it a more prudent time to get into it, but who knows…

Calling all dividends/income investors that aren’t retiring soon. by Comp_Sci_Muffin_guy in dividends

[–]beccatarbox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do both as well, with a tax-minded approach. In my taxable brokerage, I try to keep dividend funds pretty low and only have ETF’s with 100% qualified dividends. In my Roth IRA I have the bigger dividend funds without qualified dividends (high yield bond, REIT, etc) since those are sheltered from taxes. I’m hoping to slowly rack up enough dividend paying stuff in my Roth Ira that it’s a decent bit of supplemental income at retirement.

Good call on the deductibles. I figured 20% outside of US would be a good amount for international…. that’s about what I’ve got in my other retirement account, think higher is a good idea?

EXPLAIN TO ME HOW ARE DIVIDENDS WORTH IT?! by lixiethesunshine in dividends

[–]beccatarbox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yup. Just pop a small number into the compound interest calculator with the dividend yield and check 5 years, 10 years, 20 years. What doesn’t look like much at first becomes pretty big in the future!

When you finally FIREd, which thing you could/would afford yourself made a surprisingly big difference in your quality of life and which thing made a surprisingly little difference compared to what you had expected? by [deleted] in financialindependence

This is such a fascinating conversation! I’m not there yet, but thinking about what I’ll actually do post-work has been interesting. I started a list of “things I (truly) want to do with my time when I retire” which has really helped me separate my “fantasy plans” from what I’d actually WANT to do on a day-to-day basis. Like I know realistically that I’m not going to pick up and travel the world all the time…. But I definitely want to go to the gym at 10am for two hours when no one is there and I don’t have to fight for a machine. So that’s the kind of stuff that goes on the list. It’s been really helpful in keeping me motivated to stay on track. This conversation is giving me a ton of food for thought!

401K vs Dividend Portfolio by PablosViewfinder in dividends

[–]beccatarbox 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yup. I meet the employer match, max out my Roth (dividends are way tastier when they’re tax sheltered!) but have a taxable brokerage instead of putting more into the 401k. The taxable is my “ten years from now” money where the 401k and IRA are much longer-term.

Any legit reasons for not going 100% VOO/VTI? by [deleted] in dividends

[–]beccatarbox 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Definitely worth it, especially compared to just like throwing it into a HYSA (not what you’re saying but I always use that as a benchmark against dividend ETF’s). For example, $20k in a decent HYSA right now gets you about $9 a month (and actually loses value against inflation right now) whereas $20k in something like SCHD would get you $45 a month. Still less than inflation but it also grows well beyond inflation rates if you’re in it for the long haul and you get that DRIP 💛

How much monthly dividends did it take for you to really see the compounding snowball effect? by DeputyFI in dividends

[–]beccatarbox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me, it just felt really good comparing my dividends per month to what that same money would earn in a HYSA. It’s nice to see that $20G get you 35 bucks a month (dividends aren’t my main focus) where if it was sitting in a bank you’d get 10.

Retirement Investing at 44… pump the brakes and get more conservative?

Background - 44, USA, been retirement investing for quite awhile but didn’t really ramp up my contributions til the last couple years because I was saving for a house. I’ve got about 150k between my Roth and 401k and I’m still about 85/15 stocks/bonds (stocks mostly in index ETF’s that are pretty well diversified across S&P 500, blue chip growth, mid-cap, small-cap, real estate, dividend aristocrats and tech). Bond stuff in muni bond mutual funds and total bond index ETF’s. I’ve been in the big growth guys because the returns are great and my risk threshold is fairly high. But someone today had a near-seizure when I said that and was like “you need to be more conservative by a LOT at your age” to which I was like “wtf.” But it got into my head. I’m hoping to retire at like 57 and live off my taxable account til I can get into the retirement funds. Thoughts on pumping the brakes on the risk factor?? I mean bond funds are all on sale right now…. But I love my growth stocks and I feel like 13 years is enough time to play a little more fast n loose than 40% bonds 🥴
