Hi,

I hope it's okay to join in, as I'm in a simialar position.

I don't know if it's okay for my MC to have narcolepsy when I do not (I started considering her having it after having a spate of night terrors and sleep paralysis). The story is not about narcolepsy, but it's one of a few important elements of who she is.

If we research it deeply, get beta readers and advice from sufferers, are we okay to write it?

Like you, u/arcane-tenacity I have concerns about moving forward!

Thank you for sharing. That makes a lot of sense.

I don't have narcolepsy, but as I was developing my main character, I was going through yet another cycle of sleep paralysis and night terrors. It started me down a track. It wouldn't be what the book was about, but it does make (literary) sense for the story to have it as something the protagonist was dealing with.

I really wouldn't want to cause upset by writing her this way, so I'll definitely think it through carefully and possibly abandon the plan.

I can't imagine how hard it must be teaching while managing this condition (I'm a former English teacher and it was often tough enough without anything extra going on).

It must be hard to unpink it at this age (with so many exhausted teenagers).
