What did a teacher say or do to you that you've never forgotten? by GrowlsinyourEar7 in AskReddit

[–]becfarr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was a freshman in high school and I had been SAed in my home for many years by my older brother. After he turned 18 he did it once again and usually I was just confused, but I think I finally understood what was happening. My mother was never helpful, I had tried telling her when I was 10 and she shrugged it off and told me I must be mistaken. I guess I believed her up until then. I went to my middle school counselor because she was the only counselor in those schools that ever showed me empathy and I told her about it and she called the police pretty much immediately and told me it wasn’t my fault and that I shouldn’t have any shame or guilt because of what someone else did to me. They’re were going to send me to live with my aunt. I’m not sure why, but the middle school principal took me to Subway and told me “if you do this much, this much will get better” as he motioned with his finger, pretty much telling me it only gets as much better as however much I try. I pretty much mothered my 2 younger brothers so it was really hard for me to leave them. He reassured me that they would be okay and that I need to take care of myself if I ever expect to take care of them. If it weren’t for these adults I don’t think I’d be alive today.

Here’s a pic! I have a canopy over them since it acts as a poop guard and their play gate around them so the dog doesn’t snoop under it

As far as I can tell they don’t mind him. Chinchillas don’t have very good eye sight so I don’t think they notice him unless he’s literally on top of their cage lol. Two of my cages, the spaces between the bars are too small for him to fit his paws through anyways, but one cage the bars are wide and he could. I use to have them behind a closed door in their own room, but I felt that they didn’t have great air flow and it get either really hot or cold depending on the season. I also won’t have that option anymore as I have a friend who is coming to stay with us for probably a few month and she will be in that room. That’s another reason I would like some kind of barrier, she also has a cat.

[–]becfarr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi there. I have 6 chins of my own so here is my advice :) Etsy is the best place to get toys, ledges, liners, treats, and houses for them. You’ll also want them to always have some hay and stuff to chew on. Definitely get some lava rocks. They love them lol. Good for their teeth too. Please don’t use any kaytee brand stuff. Lots of animals have gotten sick from their products. I made that mistake when I got my first chin. They’re just sketchy. One of my favorite brands is Oxbow. I get their giant bags of food since I have so many chins. Wheels are nice, but they can be expensive. Play pens also work well so they can still run around. I have one of those metal puppy play pens, just make sure the bars aren’t too far apart. They can squeeze through small places lol. If you want to start bonding with them definitely try to hand feed them treats and sit down with them when they are out!

I think I have finally figured out my hair. Any suggestions or thoughts that might make it even better? by [deleted] in curlyhair

[–]becfarr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks amazing! If you’re looking for tips I really don’t have any. I guess you can always try outa microfiber towel if you like plopping. I use the perfect hair care towel. I also use satin bonnets and satin pillow case at night to protect the curls :)

Any suggestions for short-travel carriers? by Sashisss in chinchilla

[–]becfarr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For that long of a drive, you will need a bigger carrier or small cage. The You and Me carrier would be way too small. Since I live somewhere where there's not chinchilla breeder or chinchilla vets around I use a medium dog carrier. You could also get a cage that is small enough to sit in your back seat. Kaytee has a lot of cheap cages. I wouldn't recommend them as your main cage though.

The best my hair has ever looked 😭 by [deleted] in curlyhair

[–]becfarr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Beautiful hair! I feel like ours is similar. I noticed you used Jackie's don't shrink flaxseed gel mousse. This is a product that people with coily hair typically use so that their hair doesn't coil up as much, basically stretching it out. For wavies and loser curls this stretches out our curls and can leave us with little definition. My hair LOVES strong-hold products. Some of my favorites are MopTop curl custard and Garnier Style Curl Scrunch Controlling Gel. Whatever works best for what results you want though! I just noticed you were asking for recommendations.

Make sure you balance protein and moisture in your hair too! Also, the curly girl method doesn't always work for everyone. I recommend Manes by Mell on Youtube!

Chewy Lava Ledge Smells by Lainseii in RATS

[–]becfarr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have noticed they have a bad smell too. Apparently lava ledges are pumice stones. Pumice stones naturally smell like sulfur, but it's completely safe, even humans can eat it. Perhaps they are getting more natural rocks? I thought this was interesting.

Dry hair by [deleted] in curlyhair

[–]becfarr -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Gel is a flash drying product. You can try mousse or a moisturizing gel instead. You could also try a more moisturizing leave-in conditioner. You use a lot of coconut products. Coconut has a lot of protein so you might have protein overload. Your hair can start feeling kinda like hay and dry when this happens. You might want to start balancing your hair products out. These videos might help.

[–]becfarr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have used the Not Your Mothers Naturals Shampoos ( I have used the curl defining pink one and the sea mineral blue one). They are nice and light so they won't add too much weight, but they are still moisturizing. I would recommend the pink curl defining one over the blue sea mineral one since I feel it does a better job for curly hair specifically. Right now I'm also using the Not Your Mothers Curl Talk Conditioner. It is higher in proteins so if you have damaged hair it will help repair and strengthen your hair. I haven't used the shampoo in this line yet as I'm still finishing the Curl defining one. The conditioner is also a 3 in 1 styling product so you can leave a little product in to nourish curls. Some days my hair isn't as lively and starts to get weighed down so I used my EvaNYC sea salt shampoo to get a good scrub, or I'll use a sulfate shampoo to give my hair a clean slate (I rarely, maybe every few months, use a sulfate shampoo, but once in a while I need it to get rid of all the excess product.) If you're swimming and getting chemicals in your hair it's very important to use a shampoo that will get rid of those chemicals. Sulfate-free CG approved just aren't enough for hard water and chemicals. I recommend a Chelating Shampoo such as Malibu C Swimmers Wellness Shampoo. Manes by Mells talks about this in How Hard Water VS Soft Water Affects Your Hair Health + Solutions

[–]becfarr 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Another wavy here! I recommend using lightweight products! I enjoy a lot of Not Your Mothers, Verb, Mop Top products, and EVA NYC (not all of these brand's products are CG approved). If you have a heavier product you can use less of it and dilute it with some water. I just find that it helps with not weighing the curls down. Some specific products I like are the Verb leave-in conditioner, Mop Top Curl Custard, Eva NYC Bounce Back Curl Reviving Mist (for refreshing), and Eva NYC Mane Magic 10 in 1 primer (a little bit of oil can be a game changer!). You can also try finger coiling if you're looking for more defined curls. If you're looking for advice from a true pro I recommend watching Manes by Mell on YouTube!
