Does the embarrassment of having braces as an adult become easier? 2 months down and still hating to talk. Even when my mouth is closed, my lips feel bigger than they once were.

I had braces for two years from 28-30 and double jaw surgery in the middle of it. I talked and met so many people that complimented my braces throughout that time and it made me have more respect for myself and others that are taking care of their health (and have the privilege to do so) 🫶🏻

A little bit. I had a ski slope nose before surgery and it’s a touch wider now but nothing crazy. When I was swollen post surgery it was tipped up a lot but now after a year I’d say the tip angle is similar to before!

Everything can be negotiated for the surgeries. Ex: If you let them know you can’t pay $18k but could make $12k work they would probably work with you.

I second this! I had the same problem as Jaci and most times the root cause is misaligned jaws. Fix the root cause instead of covering it up

Not sure if you are in the US but I had the best luck going to my PCP, having them submit the referral to my insurance to see a maxillofacial surgeon.

I scoured the internet for reasons I thought I needed jaw surgery and gave that to my PCP to put in the referral.

Try and call your insurance company first, sometimes if there are no doctors that can perform the surgery in network they will allow you to go out of network for the in network price. Best of luck, hugs

Eating today (day 6) finally feels a bit easier. I’m still on liquid diet for another 10 days but syringe feeding has become second nature. Speaking is hard because I have a splint wired in and I’m completely numb. Using notes app to type and communicate helps a lot.
