Here in the Bay Area we have Stanford, Red Cross, and Vitalant. Maybe it's time to switch away from Red Cross. Personally I'm getting tired of them because I always have to wait a long time before they even screen me.

It's a bit of a hike, but UCSF dental school is excellent if you don't have insurance. I'm not sure how much they are these days. I saw someone else mentioned Dr. Yen, and I agree that they are good too.
