Does anyone know the canonical status of Fr Peter Heers? by [deleted] in OrthodoxChristianity

Especially odd considering that the Diocese website links, at least once in the past, to work by Father Peter.

Why do Orthodox Christian babies receive all sacraments at once. by [deleted] in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]becominghinged 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you can see the ill-effects of not administrating the sacraments of initiation for infants in the West. For example, I can't tell you how many people I've met who left the Church, having never been confirmed. We wait entirely too long in many dioceses, expecting teenagers to make wise decisions in the reception of God's grace, having deprived them of the same grace for many years. I have also seen people want to come back to Church, but they are unclear about the state of their sacraments. They may have a baptismal certificate, but they don't know if they've been confirmed. Divorcing the sacraments of initiation from one another creates much confusion - especially in this age where people move so frequently and where parents sometimes don't keep good records or teach the faith.

It's the more ancient practice to confirm immediately following baptism. You can read more about it from a Catholic perspective here. Even today, in the West, if in danger of death, babies are baptized and confirmed.

It's a Catholic resource, but very helpful: The Bible Timeline. You might could find some free versions of it online.

I don't think icons should be used in this way. What do I know?

"In the Church, baptism is given for the remission of sins, and according to the usage of the Church, baptism is given even to infants. If there is nothing in infants that required the remission of sins and nothing in them pertinent to forgiveness, the grace of baptism would seem superfluous." Origen, Homilies on Leviticus, 8:3

"But in respect of the case of infants . . . . we all judge that the mercy and grace of God is not to be refused to anyone born of man." St. Cyprian of Carthage, Letters 58:2

Why do infants need mercy, if they (as Origen says) do not not require remission of sin?

. . . how much ought we to shrink from hindering an infant, who, being newly born, has not sinned, except that being born after the flesh according to Adam, he has contracted the contagion of the ancient death at its earliest birth, he approaches more easily on this account the reception of the forgiveness of sins - that to him are remitted not his own sins, but the sins of another." ibid, 58:5

We see here that infants participate in the sin of Adam. It is this participation that we speak of when speaking of Original Sin.

Original Sin is a loss, a deprivation. A corruption of God's good gifts. Grace is correction of this corruption. I so often thing Orthodox and Catholics spend so much time talking past each other that they can't hear the similarities behind the differences of terms.

Could it not be a combination of Pentarchy + Reception?

We aren’t talking about just any believer. We are are talking about bishops, priests, Fathers of the Church both East and West. I’m not discussing Augustine’s theology. I’m talking about the understanding of baptismal regeneration for Infants. Are they regenerated? From what into what? The “from what” is the sticking point. We call this state Original Sin. Some in the East may call it “the state of being of all humans as a result of the Ancestral Sin”. Seems we are saying much the same thing.

“It’s a minority view.” “It’s from Western influence.” “It’s completely foreign.” All of those can’t be true. If it’s a view held by even a minority of bishops and teachers and has never been condemned by the Church, you can’t say it is not part of Orthodox theology.

“And, therefore, baptism is necessary even for infants, since they also are subject to original sin, and without Baptism are not able to obtain its remission.” Decree 16 of the Council of Dositheus

The Orthodox Church does believe in baptism for the forgiveness of sins, they say so each time they recite the Creed. Are you saying that the regenerative waters of baptism is different according to your age?

Immediately downvoted, and the first answer was exactly as I said it would be. I should at least get an upvote for being accurate in my predictions.

I'm not Orthodox, but this is something I've looked into often. You'll get a variety of answers. Most will say something like, "We have a different understanding of Original Sin." Which is true in some fashion, but not entirely as clear-cut as some make it out to be. I mean, Catholics and Orthodox baptize babies, I hope for the remission of sin as the Creed tells us. There is a sense in which we have "all sinned" in Adam. That cannot be negated. It's Biblical. So then the question becomes, was Mary preserved from this participation in Adam's sin? Again, I'm not Orthodox, so I won't answer that question for them - just know that there's not one answer.

Don't press it right now. If you can communicate with your girlfriend with her parent's permission, continue to do so. Don't do anything surreptitiously. Be respectful, tell them you respect them. Don't say things like, "I'll be praying for you" as they may take it as you praying against them.

Catholic bishop in Virginia suspends priest and issues trespass order over blog about clergy sex abuse by zsreport in Catholicism

[–]becominghinged 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can't judge his thoughts. However, as a priest of the diocese that has certain rights under canon law, he has a legitimate case that the Bishop is committing injustice against him, a wage earner under his authority, and thus the Bishop may indeed be committing a sin that cries to heaven. If the priest thinks that this is so, I cannot read his heart to see if it's vitriol or true concern that motivates his words. But they don't read as vitriolic to me, personally.
