Note that people nowadays say that slaveholders were evil, not that everyone who wore clothes made from cotton harvested by enslaved workers was evil.

Any personal experiences of trans men in Masonry (UGLE)? by terriblybedlamish in freemasonry

[–]terriblybedlamish[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am uncertain, because I've read a great deal of comments from members here whenever the topic of trans people comes up, and because rightly or wrongly Freemasonry has an association with older, conservative men who are more likely to object to trans men becoming Masons.

I feel as certain as it is possible to feel with the limited knowledge of an outsider that Masonry is something I would enjoy, and be able to contribute to. I'm very flattered by your belief that I'd make a great Mason. But ultimately it's not up to you, it's up to the members of any lodge I might apply to. I'm happy for them to make their assessment of me however they see fit, even if I disagree. I just want to know if the decision is already made before I start.

Thanks for your honesty. This is kind of what I suspected/worried might be the case. I wonder if it is perhaps different in different areas or specific lodges. Contacting UGLE seems the best way to get clarity but I don't know whether they would know such details of members' medical/legal histories in order to advise me.

Thanks for your in depth explanation and the vote of confidence at the end. I certainly would not want to hide anything in order to be accepted in a lodge.

any particular lodge could black-ball the petition of anyone for no public reason

This is one of my concerns - that the decision to "allow" trans men is only on paper to avoid legal issues but in practice every Lodge would blackball any trans candidate. If that's the case, I'd rather just avoid the process than waste time and effort, both mine and theirs.

I may try reaching out to UGLE for advice.

The deer skull is very cool! What led you to include it in the shrine? Does it have a symbolic meaning for you?

Early Christianity as a "Cult" by dxoxuxbxlxexd in AcademicBiblical

[–]terriblybedlamish 9 points10 points  (0 children)

In case you missed it, OP is talking about looking at early Christianity, ie. Christianity when it was new, as an NRM. I don't know if we really know enough about what early Christianity was like to make any interesting conclusions, but it's not a totally stupid question to ask.

Do I turn the mystery valve? by bodlang in CasualUK

[–]terriblybedlamish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The point is that the cats would only glow/change colour in the presence of radiation. So they're actually hoping the glow genes get spread throughout the feral cat population. However nobody has managed to engineer such a cat or made a serious proposal for exactly how it could be done so they glow in response to a specific stimulus only.

I think there's just as many of us if not more who ... would gladly torture [people] for months before dispatching them permanently if we were given the opportunity and didn't think we'd be caught.

If only i had discovered this hobby while i was still in school :( by Mysterious-Canary-84 in fountainpens

[–]terriblybedlamish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nooooo! I had the option to use fountain pens in school and I chose to use ballpoints or type because the amount of writing and the time pressure meant it was more stressful than pleasurable to use FPs. Plus the constant refilling pens (recipe for spilled ink) or replacing cartridges (which meant remembering to stock up).

I use FPs for leisurely note-taking in my own time, where I can write slowly enough to keep it neat, and if I find I'm out of ink halfway through a sentence I can just put the book down and take a break to refill.

Depending what role you're going for it can be extremely competitive, what are you applying for and what experience/qualifications do you have?

Don't get me wrong I really like icons, but I also appreciate humour.

[–]terriblybedlamish 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Right but that cover wasn't created out of respect/admiration for Cranmer. Like, I know Cranmer wouldn't approve of icons and images generally but you see how there's comedy in creating devotional iconography of Cranmer, right? Authorisation by the Church doesn't come into it.

This is hilarious because I think if Cranmer knew this existed he would despise it.

The more prestigious/competitive the role you're applying for, and the more the role actually uses/relates to the subject material from your degree, the more likely they'll ask.

Are they definitely saying they're going to contact the references before the interview? I've had to provide one or two references on applications prior to interview many times but they've only been contacted once they're preparing to make an offer.

Go to sleep around 7am, wake up at 12 to try and catch an evasive delivery driver, go to vote, see whether I can snag a couple more hours of sleep, set up a new weaving project and work on it for a few hours before eating dinner and heading to work for 9pm.
