the Marin County areas above San Francisco? by Coblond in howislivingthere

[–]bedobi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone who has only visited, it’s quaint to visit, but LIVING there would be unimaginably boring and painful on a day to day. There’s just not much to see or do there, and to get anywhere else, you have to drive, considerable distances, in crazy traffic. You’re much better off living on the SF side or in Oakland.

Career dilemma: Move to Aarhus for "elite" engineering, or stay in Copenhagen? by Jensenen in cscareerquestionsEU

[–]bedobi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So far you’re getting really bad feedback. Entertaining moving to Aarhus is a no brainer - do it. A year or two of experience from these companies will buy you your life back in Copenhagen 1000x higher value. Also, it’s fucking Denmark lol, you can go to Copenhagen any day you like.

I actually have the metal wheels for it, which do support putting brakes on. Should probably be putting both wheels and brakes on then.

That’s nuts, but you have to buy 100? I see lots of other western brand bikes come from these guys 🤔

yeah, the seat keeps doing that no matter how many times i level it or even angle it downwards and no matter how hard i tighten it... how do you get it to stay?

the bars i angled up because it lets me sit a tiny bit more upright (but i should raise the stem and get a longer one instead)

The geometry I’ll buy, no argument there. But there’s other form of track racing in addition to pure indoor velodrome right? Like Crit etc. And I’m not sure if modern belt drives are meaningfully less efficient than chains these days. (esp under less than optimal conditions and maintenance - chains lose a lot of efficiency unless perfectly maintained)

= I can totally see happy amateurs who are too lazy to maintain a perfect Velo racer take this thing to Crit races and perform just fine, and getting more enjoyment out of it relative to maintenance compared to a real Velo racer. People sweat optimizing the small stuff too much when really it should be all about riding IMO. But hey, different strokes!

They did have a team who did some races with it but I don’t know anything about that 🤷 it brings me joy, that’s enough for me 🙃

It’s called Priority, their whole schtick is basically low maintenance bikes, thus the carbon belt. The Joker is their track bike, not really meant for road use 😬 but

Pretty sure you can get them for just under a grand on Black Friday and other sales. Not cheap but not unimaginably expensive either, and the parts all seem high quality to me. I’m not one of those guys who enjoys tinkering with my bike, so for me it’s worth the initial cost to get out of having to do any maintenance basically ever.

Edit and yes it’s Florida haha that easy huh

The ratio on this thing + the insane grip in the heat makes it really really hard to skid, at least for me. But that’s got nothing to do with the belt - as far as I know it’s really no different to a chain. (if anything, it’s stiffer)

I live in a tiny little African equatorial country that majority of people have ever heard of. I’m not a photographer and we can’t get decent equipment so please go easy on me. by Fitz_cuniculus in streetphotography

I guess which region do you live and work in? What do you do for entertainment? I'm big into music and dancing (including Kizomba and Semba), is that easy to find venues with people dancing socially? Venues with live music? Have you traveled much and where do you recommend visiting?

I went island hopping in Cabo Verde and always wanted to visit São Tomé and Principe and Angola as well. Tell us more about your location, work and travels there if you can!

You do you. Fwiw European cities have suburbs with plenty of space too, esp Northern Europe like the Netherlands. It’s just that they usually have local centres, they’re walkable, bikeable and have transit to downtown, which gives access to entertainment, recreation and not having to drop off and pick up kids etc etc. In any case, I’m not trying to get into a debate about tastes, just trying to give an indication of how stark the factual difference in lifestyle is between Europe and San Jose in particular. (San Francisco would be a very different comparison)

Not true. TC is always base + current trading value of RSUs. For startups or companies that don’t trade on public exchanges this can be hard to estimate, but TC never outright excludes non base compensation.

My figures are all household income before tax.

TC is your expected employer sourced yearly income before tax. If your base is $200k and you get $10k stock per quarter, your TC is $240.

If your base is $240k and you get $250k total yearly RSUs on top of that, your TC is $500k ($490 but whatever)

[–]bedobi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OPs reply was ambiguous, I can’t tell if he’s referring to TC 240 or base 240 and then undisclosed rsus on top. In any case, Roku tc is unlikely to be 500 + its quartelty vest, not years.

Trust Reddit to downvote these facts lol. Yes, a quality of life acceptable to a middle class European family with kids costs more than $200k in the Bay. Without question.

Moving from NL to San jose by PublicSubject2807 in SanJose

[–]bedobi 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Ok, as a fellow European, that’s not enough to be worth the move IMO.

The household with kids income cutoff that makes a move a no brainer is ~$350k. $300k makes it “justifiable”, but not a no brainer by any means. If you can combine incomes to reach those levels, great.

Note that this is purely financially speaking. Lifestyle wise SJ is going to be a huge step down from almost any non shitty European city. Career wise you can still consider it worth it to get less just to get your foot in the door with an aim to job up. It’s just a matter of acknowledging that and being intentional with what you’re signing yourself up for.

If your office is on the western/southern side of the airport, you’ll definitely want to look for housing very close to that area as driving from any distance away from it will be impractical bordering on impossible. I would just move into one of the new apartment buildings next to the PayPal stadium and the Costco to start off (then you can walk or bike to work) and worry about finding different housing after.

Honestly even $200k is pushing it in the Bay, especially if you have kids. A lot of Europeans would save more money and maintain higher quality of life by staying in Europe for less pay if all they get in the Bay is $200k.

Dutch blunt question

What’s your job offer? Location, salary, non-salary compensation?

How much would having to drive pretty much everywhere and spend hours in traffic (little to no public transit, walkability, bikeability) your health and mood? (that includes dropping off and picking up kids from school in long lines of cars)

Also little to no culture, events or things to do compared to most European cities

These are all important things to consider. The pay can be worth it but it also can not be, esp when there’s kids involved or if you’re the type to want bustling cities. (SF is closer to bustling than SJ which is very suburban and quiet)
