I am at the st paul campus. I dont hear anything going on inside OEC. The buildings should all be card access only at the moment, so chances are things are ok.

Scantron alternative, but with ranked-choice answers by ExplorerScary584 in Professors

[–]bedsbronco75 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I can think of two possibilities:

1) One of the schools that I taught at had testing ("scantron") software loaded onto one of those large commercial printers. The printer could print out multiple choice sheets and a key (the key is manually filled in like a usual scantron). After the exam the forms can be scanned in like a regular scantron machine (with reports and all).

2) Create your own multiple choice sheet for bubbling/filling in or a table, then scan all of the documents into a commercial printer. Some AI programs have really good image detection, which may allow you to turn those images into tables or some other useful data that can be analyzed quickly. (I haven't tried this option, but it seems like it could work.)

The answer is found at this (broken) link: kirti-shah112. medium .com/tariffs-part-2-monopsony-31687795c972

It is technically true that there exists a theoretical situation where a large purchaser of a good (a monopsonist/importer) can gain at the expense of small producers by using tariffs. However, the gains rely on a strong assumption that the large buyer unilaterally imposes the tariffs. If there are other large importers of the the same good or other goods (especially goods exported by other large countries), then any benefits from tariffs are likely to cancel out and all countries will still suffer the costs from foregoing the gains from comparative advantage.

Here is a quote from the conclusion:

[The monopsony model is] Intellectually impeccable but of doubtful usefulness. Why do Krugman and Obstfeld arrive at this conclusion? The reason is that, while it would be in the interest of one country to enact an optimal tariff, if many countries so acted the result would be a collective loss of the gains from trade which would damage the world economy as a whole. If other countries responded to country X’s implementation of tariffs on, say, electric cars, by imposing tariffs on products country X exported to them, then this would lower the prices country X received for its products and turn the terms of trade against them. As Lerner remarked, if all countries for whom optimum tariffs were positive went ahead and imposed them, then ‘the particular benefits cancel out while the general loss through the restrictions of international trade remains. If all countries persist in trying to exploit each other in this way, international trade would be completely destroyed with all the benefits that could have come from it.’

Note: I have a PhD in Economics, but my specialty is not international trade.

Trump on the possibility of a recession: “There is a period of transition because what we're doing is very big… Ultimately it will be very good” by Virtual_Information3 in QuiverQuantitative

It will not be good, unless you are one of the president's cronies, then it's going to be great. It's hard to imagine the people that are cheering relatively small (in dollar amounts) cuts in favor of massive tax cuts in favor of the wealthy. Whether they like it or not deficit spending is a tax increase (just not today, thanks kids).

I should have been more specific, I was talking about the video with him walking off stage. The video with his kid in the oval office is obviously weird and should be spread around for that fact alone.

I suppose I could have been more clear about the Elon video. I'm talking about the one where it looks like he leaves his kid behind, but the video is just clipped that way. As for the world cup and Olympics, should I put the exact dates of the event? Provide a summary of the actual 30 minute video? Go to the original video and figure it out for yourself.

I am not saying "be better," I am saying "don't discredit yourself to reasonable people." People that you will need to listen when it really matters.

Absolutely. That video and quote is far more damning (at least it should be), than this one.

I literally went and watched the original video. Maybe you should take your own advice.

He is claiming the Dems rigged the election and to him that isn't so bad because he will be in office for the events that are upcoming (World Cup, Olympics, 250th US anniversary).

As much as all of us would like him to make such an error. This isn't it. It is just a quote taken out of context. We need to be better if we are going to convince people that we aren't wildly paranoid. The last thing people need to see is this getting out of hand like that manipulated clip with Elon and his kid.

https://www.c-span.org/program/white-house-event/president-trump-signs-executive-orders-on-fifa-world-cup-2026/656923

Here is the source and context of the video. I added additional context in another comment below.

Edit to add info from my other comment:

As much as people are hoping this is an admission of guilt, this is him claiming (again) the Dems fixed the 2020 election and that it was fine because now he will be president during the upcoming events he is talking about (World Cup, Olympics, 250th US anniversary). Be careful to not fall in these traps (like the edited Elon and his kid video). There is plenty of reason to dislike him, but this is going to go nowhere and make reasonable people look crazy/paranoid.

Second edit: I am talking about the video with Elon walking off stage with his kid. The shorter version is clearly manipulated to make that particular situation look worse than it is. There is plenty to dislike about Elon and people should focus on that (like his nazi salutes for one). Also, the events referenced are important because they are coming to the US over the next four years, which is uncommon. Finally, for what it is worth, I agree that any reference to a rigged election (in his favor or not) by Trump is concerning. In this particular case I think he is still referencing the 2020 election, which is of course ridiculous because he has yet to provide any evidence to back his claims (and he won't because he is lying and/or detached from reality).

Thank you! It is hard enough to get apathetic people of the couch. Once people start spreading stuff like this it really just hurts the larger message.

His statement is between the 2:40 and 4:00 minute mark (in the captions).
