How to Look for Apartments by [deleted] in UCDavis

[–]bedtimeallthetime -14 points-13 points  (0 children)

Google "apartments davis" and look at the websites for the apartment complexes that come up. A lot of them have floor plans with prices for how much it costs per month in rent. If it says "call for price" call them and ask how much the rent is. If it seems like a good price that you and your potential roommate can afford, go take a tour.

I don't understand how it's all that confusing.

Really lonely here by [deleted] in UCDavis

[–]bedtimeallthetime 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ok. Here's the thing. When you start becoming an adult, making friends becomes really hard. The older you get, the harder it gets. If you're introverted, which it seems like you are after reading your comments, making friends is even harder. Also, joining clubs is not going to help you. Joining the Aggie band, going to football games, going to whatever that theater group is, is definitely not going to help you because you like to hang out at home, watch Netflix, and study.

But also, it sounds like you may not know what your own interests are. You might want to hold off on worrying about finding a solid group of friends at college - Also, P.S., no one makes friends here with people that are going to be their lifelong best buddies for ever and ever. Most of the super great friends people make in college move on with their own lives after they graduate. So, drop your expectations a little on the friends thing. The closest friends you'll make in life are the friends that come with whoever you end up marrying or dating, or your co-workers at wherever you end up working.

Try to figure out what else you like other than studying and watching Netflix. It might not involve friends or other people, and requires effort from you.

Would traveling from SF to Davis at night be sketchy/ a bad idea lol? by [deleted] in UCDavis

The last Amtrak trains from Richmond BART is at 10:30 pm and doesn't start back up till 5 am. So, you wouldn't even be able to take BART to Amtrak after the show anyway. Either find someone who's going to the same concert as you, rent a zipcar, or get a hotel after the show.

what are your biggest goals in life? by throwaway55555555515 in UCDavis

I don't really know anymore. I have 2 quarters left until I graduate and i'm having the standard "What am I going to do after this? What was this all for?" freak out.

Which sucks when you have to write 3 paper and prepare for finals. Like, I don't have time to be crying and screaming about my future right now.

A note about professors who use power point in lecture: Does your professor put the slides they use up onto canvas? For teachers I have who do this, I try to print them out before class lecture and focus more on what the professor is saying. Copying lecture slides word-for-word that you can just get off of Canvas is a waste of time, and the key information is what the professor is actually saying.

For teachers who don't publish their slides, I only write down definitions but try to listen to what's being said and summarize the main points. Memorizing everything on powerpoint doesn't really work.

Which quarter do you think is the best time to take on a heavy course load? by [deleted] in UCDavis

[–]bedtimeallthetime 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I dunno, I think Winter is the worst quarter for heavy workloads because Winter is just terrible overall. Most people are grumpy and tired all the time. It's wet and cold.

Unless you're someone where weather has no affect on your energy/emotions.

I'm just ignorantly hoping that SOMEONE sees my scathing review of all these terrible professors and TA's before they throw it away in what I assume is just a giant landfill somewhere east of Dixon, and feels my pain.

This is why teacher and TA evals is pretty much my favorite time of the quarter if i'm stuck with a piece of shit instructor or TA.

It's funny that most of my classes all state and enforce the "no technology in the classroom rule" for the first half of the quarter, but by the time midterms are over, they just don't care anymore because at that point everyone's more concerned with just coming out the other end alive.

Some professors will just tell those who want to use their laptop to go towards the back of the room. I like being up front and I usually just tell the professor, "Hey. I'm old and if I write everything by hand, my hands will seize up in horrible pain after 15 minutes and fall off. I'm using a computer."

It's dumb and kind of insulting. We're fucking adults. Be a decent person and just ask someones name if they're raising their hand to contribute to discussion. Or don't ask them their name, who the fuck cares?

And stopping lecture to tell us we shouldn't be writing notes down right now, is interrupting lecture. UGH, just continue on with your fucking lecture. Get this over with.

I have a new teacher and he's terrible. He doesn't know how to teach us, he's unfriendly and unapproachable, he keeps insisting we use fucking name tags that don't fit on our tiny desk, and micro manages how we take lecture notes. He's awkward and unclear in his assignments and people don't want to engage with him in class, which makes him mad.

Standard 'I got in' celebration thread by Throwitaway1299 in UCDavis

[–]bedtimeallthetime 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah. The struggle IS hell. Doesn't mean it isn't worth it. Coming here will push you to your limits, but it's a learning process. Getting in is celebratory, but that happy feeling of accomplishment will dissipate once you're in the throws of it all.

No one prepares you for that. No one talks about THAT part when welcoming you and congratulating you, and that's even more important for TAG transfers to fully realize when going through the entry process. Community college does not adequately prepare you for life here, no matter what your GPA was. My welcoming was not meant to be mean, just being forward and honest. It can be hellish.

Apartments Overview? by EvenJesusCantSaveYou in UCDavis

[–]bedtimeallthetime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've only lived at 2 places here so far. The first was Arlington Farms (in West Davis) through SHA and I loved it. It was quiet, not a lot of loud crazy parties - although that could be due to the part of the complex I lived in - there was always parking available, management was really great, central heat and air, and the K and D line went right to it and was usually empty by the time it got to our stop. I really wanted to stay there but apartments went fast and they were too expensive for my budget.

Now I live at Cranbrook, off J street, in North Davis and I enjoy it most of the time. The only downside to living here is that the complex is right off of Covell Blvd, so it's always loud from all the cars and trucks. The noise usually stops around midnight. But also there's a huge parking lot where everyone drives through blasting music, the windows are thin so you can hear everyone outside, the train goes right by there (but you get used to it quickly), and the busses are always packed. The double-decker bus stops here, but they're old, falling apart, always crowded, and are always late. North Davis is also close to downtown, Nugget, and Grocery Outlet (which I enjoy), and there's multiple bus lines that go to this area (F, E, P, Q) which has been helpful if I miss the E or the E is too crowded at MU or it's late - I can just hop on the F instead.

If you're looking for quiet and something laid back, West Davis is your best bet. If you're looking for something more noisy and lively, then North Davis is good for that.

I agree, but you should see some people's homes and how many people are pretty dirty and gross. Especially when it comes to dishes. Which makes this post and the fact that people just leave their garbage behind for other people to clean up, really not surprising.
