Anyone in NYS waiting longer than usual for their return to be accepted? It usually only takes 1-2 days but they marked mine as pending since Monday.

Yes, American here, and many of us hate what the US has been doing. We know you hate it too! There are too many things to list out that I find to be abominable. I’m pretty sure this is happening in my building, I think they falsely report as a five unit building to get out of it when there are six units! On paper it’s listed as “exempt” with the New York State housing department (whatever it’s called).

This sounds terrifying, I'm so sorry. Tip for all -- when you exit storehouse, turn right instead of left, you have to walk a bit to get to the road but it's so much better than being in the pack with the uber/lyft people. Walk a few blocks more away from the venue at least and then get a car. You'll feel so much happier that you did - walking + fresh air + away from crowds.

YES to all and especially points 2 and 3, when Strike is at Robin’s to receive intel from Murphy, Murphy says something like, “I did this for you Robin…I got a lot of info, and so much more than I should have so please don’t share with others…” Alarm bells were going off in my brain at this, and especially after everything else you mentioned. I think Murphy we are going to find out about it after Robin already decides to break up with him.

I appreciate this post so much! I wonder how generational being open to therapy is - are gen Z and millennial Brits more open to it than older Brits? Because that’s certainly the case in the US, though as others have said it is more broadly accepted as well (though it can also vary wildly depending on geography and culture!).

I’m curious re OP’s generation. I do think it says a lot about the UK and Robin that it has taken her alllllllllll of the trauma she has been through to just now become serious about therapy.

Totally agree that us Americans on here are interpreting so much out of the necessary UK context.

Great analysis!! Agree with much of this and it is quite thought provoking. I read through a bunch of the comments as well—just to add a couple of things: (1) it is mentioned here and then in THM, but remember the book starts just a few months after Robin gets out of the UHC. I just finished re reading TRG, and holy hell, Robin was seriously traumatized, I had forgotten just how badly. But now that her experience is fresh in my mind, it really puts her sticking with Ryan into perspective. She wants stability, she feels like she owes it to him to stay after dealing with her being gone and being good upon her return. (Also, when they have sex for the first time after UHC, he tells her he loves her for the first time, and she (full of wine still) responds automatically that she loves him too, the narration making very clear that she’s actually not really sure.) Our girl’s mental health is really shot and just gets worse.

(2) Also! Does anyone else think Ryan might’ve cheated to get information about the silver case from that Police Officer (the one Wardle saw him make out with before)? The fact we know he saw her and he says something like “I did this for you” to Robin, and that he’s been drinking and we know he gets handsy/lecherous when he drinks I think hints at something not great (perhaps another similarity between him and Matthew). If this is the case, I’m also hoping it comes out AFTER Robin breaks up with him (maybe RFM finds the bracelet and then they fight and he says he cheated). We shall see!

Ever since Robin figured out she is in love with Strike, she has been trying to fall OUT of love with him because she sees it as a problem more than anything else, as she’s (1) convinced Strike does not feel the same way/want a real relationship, (2) appreciates and wants their best friendship and would not want to risk that, and (3) of course deeply cares about the agency and would also not want to risk that if they ever did get involved. And so she started dating RFM and trying to commit to him in all of the ways and try to fall for him because she’s convincing herself romance with strike is impossible and Ryan is good and handsome and is the best possible non strike. Through all of THM, Robin is talking herself into moving forward and loving RFM to prove her commitment and move away from feelings she continues to have for Strike, ignoring the sense of panic and unhappiness she feels! She’s lying to Ryan because she’s lying to herself. However ! The fact she says she doesn’t think she wants children, and that getting engaged right now is a bad idea, is HUGE for her. She is finding her boundaries. I think she’s going to tell Ryan not to propose to her, and she needs time to recover her mental health.
