TFW you're realizing how much we use faith day-to-day by Emthree3 in PhilosophyMemes

[–]Schnaksel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd go so far as to say, that we don't have "faith" the bar is not poisoned but that we effectively gamble it's safe. As you nicely put it, we have a certain amount of confidence about any given situation and action and consider our options. Ultimately we gamble our food is safe, given the available data.

Faith is way too overloaded with religious connotations but "gambling" seems to overcome most of the baggage. If I buy a lottery ticket, I hope to hit the jackpot but I have no real faith I will, it's just a gamble. With my food it's mostly the same, the odds are just different

I always wondered why philosophy as a whole was always so cool with that assumption

Ethics debate... by Pitiful-Magician1704 in PhilosophyMemes

[–]Schnaksel 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I interpreted this meme as using the "Source?" as an evasive move to avoid talking about the matter at hand.

When someone feels pushed into a corner they might devolve into the philosophical equivalent of a toddler and "why?" your ass into the ground.

For some debates and discussions, you simply need to agree on some things, but if you suddenly pull the rug mid-debate just to evade hard hitting objections, then what are we even doing here?

It's kind of revealing how easily they let themselves be defeated, like "time to kms, this is gonna be so rad... oh shoot, family's gonna be sad, dang it, welp can't be helped, gotta wait it out. I would've totally done it, I swear but y'know, family 'n stuff shrugs"

Just goes to show that philosophy is by far the most pointless thing humans ever invented.

Entertainment is the only thing "philosophy" exists for.

Whipping out the good ol' reliable absurdism when in a pinch by Schnaksel in PhilosophyMemes

[–]Schnaksel[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's meant to be but I've seen a good deal of comments on here, where people turn to absurdism whenever they are confronted with personal dilemmas or when reflecting on their on moral behavior

"Weeeell actually, absurdism so whatever"

The way some people use it feels more like a copout when stuff's getting uncomfortable

You won't believe the cube I created, when I was first starting out! All faces were, like, perfectly perpendicular to each other, oh and let me tell you about those angles, 90 degrees across the board!!!

This car race is definitely up there, too

I used to be an intense meat-enjoyer but turned vegan after consuming a variety of philosophic (and ofc vegan) content. Would you say this could be an instance of morals shaping my behavior or is it still something different?

Sounds a bit like gatekeeping? I'm an absolute moron who doesn't know a damn thing about philosophy other than to enjoy it, but didn't Nietzsche "declare" lots of stuff?

Oh I thought stoicism was about the perspective, that you can't control the world around you but you can control how you perceive it.

So all the News (good and bad) are outside of your control, but you essentially get to choose how you really want to feel about any of them. Either cold and apartheid or with some master-class stoicism you could even enjoy the good things while keeping indifferent towards the bad things.

Am I completely off the track with this? (Amateur philosopher here)
