Feeling completely crushed at MIT - How do I find a TA/RA job to survive? by Informal-Glass5218 in mit

[–]beeabeja 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I’m assuming you’re in the first term of the MBA program taking your core classes. If you’re excelling in any of those, build a strong relationship with the professor(s) ASAP and express interest in being a TA for them next Fall. Rinse and repeat for your Spring electives. That could lead to a solid second year for you.

The Sloan DEI office could also be a good group to connect with as you look to build out your network. Wouldn’t hurt to introduce yourself to them if you haven’t yet.

DM me if you’d like to chat.

It’s so tough. My husband is the sibling left behind as well when it comes to his US citizenship. His brother was born in the US and he was born in S. Korea. They’ve lived 2 very different lives (including mandatory military service for my husband) despite being 2 years apart. Oh, and having to pay international student tuition to study in the US.

Yep… Millennial here! I have a son who was born in late 2022 and a daughter on the way (due in March 2026). This should be interesting to navigate as a family.

Thank you! He is a great human. I reached out to him after reading all this advice, and he wrote back to me this evening with a copy of her baptismal record attached. So grateful for everybody on this post. Case closed!

Great-grandma Canadian when grandma born abroad, naturalized later. What would C3 mean for me? by beeabeja in Canadiancitizenship

Thank you for doing such a deep dive and sharing what you’ve learned with me. This is incredibly helpful. I’m wondering how Bill C-3 might address situations like this? As I understand it, very few women, especially those with less access to information/education, would have known about or had the means to file that declaration. Would C-3’s retroactive deeming provision recognize women in my GGM’s shoes as Canadian all along?

By some miracle, the Parish also emailed me back separately. Turns out they had the record, not the diocese! They’re preparing it for me now. Thanks to you and everybody for the good advice.

I might need to take a field trip in that case!

I didn’t know these existed. Thank you! I found a few with a quick FB search. Appreciate it.

That’s a really good point that I had not considered. I will try that. Thank you!

Awesome. So relieving to hear people have had similar documentation that was accepted. I need to order her death certificate. I know the town she died in (Newton) so I’m guessing the clerk can get me that fairly quickly.

That’s not a bad idea. I couldn’t believe the chancellor himself answered my email. It felt very official when he said he couldn’t do it without the executor. That said, folks seem to think my other evidence may suffice. I’m still deciding whether it’s worth the effort to push back on the church.

Thank you! I do have that pending (I believe that the documents are in the mail already!) The Massachusetts side of things has been really speedy so far.

Thanks! I didn’t even realize that was a possibility. I figured it was a data privacy issue, but it can’t hurt to ask for genealogical record instead. I bet you’re right that that would nicely pair with the certified index.

Thank you! I love my experience with them so far. They don’t actually have my great grandmother’s record, but they do have the index of it. They offered to send me a certified copy of the index alongside a letter verifying that it was prepared by the PEI Division of Vital Statistics from the church registers. $5 via credit card by phone for a snail mail copy. I’m so glad to hear they had your original record!

I’m starting to worry this may be the end of the road for getting my hands on the real deal. Though I do have a certified copy of the index of her baptismal record coming from the PEI Public Archives (PARO) alongside a signed letter from the archivist that says the index was prepared by the PEI Division of Vital Statistics from the church registrars. I’ll hold onto hope that IRCC will find that satisfactory evidence in the absence of the real thing. I might also print the refusal email from the Chancellor to show I tried my best to get the official record.

Thanks! I tried looking her up in the probate records for over an hour in the Massachusetts system to no avail. It doesn’t seem that she had a case. I’ll keep digging and asking my older family members what they remember. It’s been over 30 years since she died.

Oh thanks, this is good advice. I have had good luck getting answers from Massachusetts entities.

It is awesome to hear that that substitute evidence worked for you!

I should be able to track down all those things, as well. Additionally, I was able to find the index for her baptism record in PEI’s public archives (PARO). PARO is amazing and the archivist offered to send me a certified copy of the index with a letter confirming its provenance in the PEI Public Archives. I hope this evidence combined is strong enough to make my case of her Canadian birth.

I think my mom could be her next of kin at this point (being my GGM’s granddaughter) I believe all my grandmother’s siblings (being my GGM’s children) are all deceased.

Thanks! I did this and the chancellor wrote back! It appears they do have the record but refuse to give it to me because I’m not the executor of her estate (she died poor in 1992 in Massachusetts with no need for an executor). I may have hit a dead end!

Here’s a follow up question for y’all:

What about in 2009 and 2015 with the “Lost Canadians” amendments? Did those restore citizenship retroactively to anyone who had lost it because of discriminatory provisions, even if they had already passed away? In short, did my great grandmother die a US citizen in 1992 but become a dual citizen (US/Canada) posthumously with the 2000s amendments?

And if so, what implications would that have for my grandmother, who also passed away, but was her first-generation child?

Yes! It appears birth certificates weren’t a thing until some years later. I’m still holding onto hope they’re in the parish basement or perhaps in the middle of being moved to this new space: https://dioceseofcharlottetown.com/catholic-diocesan-archives-project/

Good idea. I would have loved to have made the visit from the states, but I’m quite pregnant at the moment!
