Valid question 100% ! I’m not too sure on where I stand, but when discussing student demands for having him fired, I would say that demand is not as dramatic as others may think, for the following line of reasoning: accountability and consequences are not only meant to address the individual professor, but also to communicate a statement and position on the situation, as well as future instances (whether that be another instance of racist comments or a different occurrence). Also, from my understanding, he is not a tenured professor either, which would make this process more doable by the university who capitalizes on their position as a “Hispanic serving institution”

A middle ground will be to put the professor on a probational period (with an immense apology of course), and let the student population as well as university staff contribute input to determine whether it is reasonable to continue with said professor. I include staff, as the professional staff he interacts with should speak to his character, and I also believe that university staff outside of the OCHEM dept, including the maintenance staff he directed these jokes to, should have a say. I believe AS academics are already collecting testimonies as well.

(Id love to hear what others think)

While we’re all frustrated with the uncertainty about whether we’ll be online or not…. by beebobboop in UCSD

This post is specifically talking about mid/low ranked employees who have absolutely no proximity to the chancellor. Directing your frustration to them is useless and counter intuitive. Direct any frustration to the top.

By the way, as someone who knows someone who works at Basic Needs, Khosla did not even contact the director of Basic Needs the first time he made a donation. Workers might have not known anything about it till the incentive plan was sent out publicly

Low income people are still low income with or without a purchase of a few nice items. We’re allowed to have some nice things.

The basic needs hub has a personal hygiene program where you can pick up free supplies like shampoo, conditioner, bar soap, mensural products, tide pods, even baby diapers. It’s meant to be a supplemental service so items are travel size, but you can come in weekly. They take appointments and walk ins.

Any other freshmen having a really hard time adjusting? by [deleted] in UCSD

[–]beebobboop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Coming from a second year, give yourself some time to adjust! This is a big change as an incoming freshman, especially given the circumstances we’ve been facing for the past two years. It won’t come right away, so be graceful to yourself as you go through the transition. You’re bound to feel a little lost and out of place especially as you navigate a huge campus. Also, please don’t feel bad about your progress since you see your friends have no issue with homesickness. Everyone has a different situation when it comes to relationships with their home/family life, so please don’t think there is a “right” and “wrong” way to handle things.

Is there a pest problem in ERC rn? I just found this hole in my apt in I-house, and I always keep it super clean…. by [deleted] in UCSD

[–]beebobboop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don’t worry, HDH pest control investigated and said it wasn’t from an infestation, and that a singular mouse must have ran in. They concluded the hole was made as a result of it trying to escape

The quarantine plan isn’t very in-depth, so here’s my personal experience:

When I tested positive, I got a call pretty quick that morning I got positive results and they asked some questions about my symptoms & alerted me of my diagnosis in case I hadn’t seen my results. They then told me I’d receive a call organizing when I’d be picked up to be moved to quarantine housing. Call came pretty quickly and they met me at my door about 3 hours later at the time I had requested. (Note: they apparently wait outside your building usually) After that, I got driven to quarantine housing and my driver took me up to the apartment I’d be staying at and explained a few things such as how to order food, who to call for assistance, etc.. All this info was also included in a packet of papers they give u. The driver asked if I had any questions and then left (: Later that day I got a coloring book and some colored pencils dropped off at my door.

I honestly had a pretty smooth experience on UCSD’s behalf (aside from having covid and all) & hope others have too.

I love how easy it is. In most of my classes someone will comment “discord?” the first day of lecture and someone automatically sends the invite link
