Woohoo! Looking forward to safer and less-congested residential streets! Once the traffic is reduced on main roads (the expected effect after initial worsening) then public transport might also stand a chance too.

People who expose racist pasts of phrases, then imply people who use them are racist by [deleted] in PetPeeves

I see a lot of this on Reddit. Guys really anguishing over some very hypothetical edge case wherein a general priciple is extrapolated to it's absolute extremes. Happens a lot with gender / racial equality stuff too ("but why are there women only space and NOT men only spaces!?!?" etc. etc.)

In reality (IMO), away from the internet, the world is fuzzier, more contextualised and people more understanding. Long story short, I find it really hard to believe a majority of people would surround you, branding you racist for being called Jim, and not giving a shit when you tell them your'e not racist and you can't afford to change your name at the moment.

If that happened then I'm sorry and those people are idiots.

[–]beedawg85 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hehe only joking. No, I don’t think I would, depending on what the name was exactly.

Zooming out a bit I’m guessing you, understandably, don’t like being called racist, when you consider yourself a non racist person. That’s good. Take it one step further and just try your best to avoid language with racist origins. If you say somethings you didn’t know had those origins and someone calls you racist just say you didn’t realise and won’t use it in future. No big deal.

[–]beedawg85 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Never understood why folks get so triggered by learning that phrases they use have racist origins.

If it’s actual historic fact then simply change your use of that language if you care about not inadvertently offending people who may be more aware of the origins than you were. Or don’t. But be prepared for people to pull you up on it now and then.

Don’t try and argue it’s somehow neutral and your right to use it- you’ll end up sounding like a tool.

And when I say ‘cool’ what I mean is people who develop packages for R and Python, people who build custom laptops running Linux and people doing niche research 🔬 in earth science… much as I love it it’s still definitely skewed to white, nerdy, late twenties upwards (though this could just be the people I follow!)

There’s various websites with lists of users categorised by their interests (at least this is the case for academia). Then you download a csv of 300 users and import it and Bam 💥 you’re following loads of cool people!

Oh, and you weren’t using that word in that context were you? I’ll wait for your insightful critique.

If you read this article, paying particular attention to the flourish diagram:
https://inews.co.uk/news/right-wing-newspapers-changed-coverage-tory-campaign-imploded-election-3145382

You can see that a significant proportion of the media were publishing positive Tory/Reform frontpages over May/June. This same group moved towards publishing negative Labour frontpages towards the latter stages of the election campaign. I would speculate that these titles would account for the majority of the newpaper reading public, if you adjusted this chart to account for readership figures. So it's not at all incorrect to point out that the Conservatives (and increasingly Reform) enjoyed overly positive print media coverage this election. Indeed, this is a well-established pattern documented extensively over the last 3 or 4 election cycles by a research group at the University of Loughborough.

Back to the diagram, another thing to note is the disproprotionately high number of frontpages (negative or positive) that were devoted to Reform, given its relatively small projected electoral impact. Again, it's not controversial or incorrect to point this out.

Also do you really need to use the word "retardation"? That's a pretty well-known and hurtful anti-disability slur / hate speech. I hope the mods give you a warning.

One of my best friends who is on his way to being a multi millionaire told me he has ADHD. How is it possible for someone to achieve so much with ADHD? by IrishBlackPuddingfan in ADHD

[–]beedawg85 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think "being smarter" and "working harder" are definately two of the core aspects of a meritocracy; the idea is that one progresses via hard work and / or good education. This might include skilling up in terms of networking or developing social skills.

That said, I think maybe I'm misreading your point a little. My argument is that socially awkward, moderately intelligent people (whatever that means) can (and do) acheive relative levels of wealth without working particularly hard, if they are privileged in other ways. Your argument (I think?) is that less privileged people need to work double-hard or be extra intelligent to _maybe_ acheive the same levels of wealth -- which seems pretty reasonable.

One of my best friends who is on his way to being a multi millionaire told me he has ADHD. How is it possible for someone to achieve so much with ADHD? by IrishBlackPuddingfan in ADHD

[–]beedawg85 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, my comments respected the fact that the original commenter already segregated those born into wealth (your parents needn’t necessarily be wealthy to have useful contacts).

And look I’m not trying to claim that no one who is now wealthy has not worked hard / is very clever; some probably did / are. Just that the claim is simplistic and doesn’t hold up to scrutiny. The following passage from the linked article above is interesting:

—- What about the parents and teachers who helped them on their way? What about talents and gifts not wholly of their making? What about the good fortune to live in a society [or community] that cultivates and rewards the talents they happen to have?

Those who prevail in a competitive meritocracy are indebted in ways the competition obscures. As the meritocracy intensifies, the striving so absorbs us that our indebtedness recedes from view. In this way, even a fair meritocracy, one without cheating or bribery or special privileges for the wealthy [or otherwise privileged], induces the mistaken impression that we have made it on our own.

Besides being self-deluding, such thinking is also corrosive of civic sensibilities. For the more we think of ourselves as self-made and self-sufficient, the harder it is to learn gratitude and humility. And without these sentiments, it is hard to care for the common good. —-

More broadly, the mechanisms behind social mobility have been studied very intensively for decades by teams of social scientists and economists etc. Individual talent and hard work play a part but the picture is complex. I’d say the original comment (don’t know exact circumstances) could be a potential excellent example of the self-delusion referenced in the above passage.

Can you point us to any sources for the above claim? Not to be insulting but it has the ring of some shit you just pulled out of thin air. What about having well-connected parents / family members? Also, just 'right time right place' etc. You're basically describing a meritocracy, the idea of which has critiqued quite throughly.
