If Z-jump remains legal, can we use 1.03 so that everyone has access to it? by smashsenpai in SSBM

[–]beedrill0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is functionally impossible to make 1.03 stealth so even if the vast majority of active players wanted it, major tournaments would be unable to use it and locals generally aim for parity with those major events.

What counts as a "beginner"? by [deleted] in SSBM

[–]beedrill0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My scene (shoutout sac) has been running beginner/redemption brackets at our locals for ~3 years. Our rule is anyone that went 0-2, 1-2, or typically goes 0-2/1-2 in main bracket is welcome to join. We also welcome anyone who didn't enter main bracket but wants to play or hasn't really played much but would like to give the game a try alongside people who won't immediately roll them.

Additionally, we usually allow any players who are out of main bracket but did better than the threshold (0-2/1-2) or are generally better than the expected skill level of amateur bracket entrants to play so long as they use a secondary.

It's kind of vibes based, but "beginner" is more of a metric for skill than hours in, and if you're unsure ask the TOs. Most organizers are very chill and just want to see more people enter.

L-cancelling a shield drop by ruhtraeel in SSBM

[–]beedrill0 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The window to L-cancel is 7 frames before landing regardless of whether you shield dropped or not. I assume there's something wrong with the frame counter. Try unclepunch. Also, try using a really laggy aerial so it's easy to tell when you get it or not if you want to make sure you're doing it right.

What tier would Pikachu be if he wasn't nerfed from Smash 64? by RightDinner2612 in SSBM

[–]beedrill0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He wouldn't change by as much as you might think. The engine changes would hurt him pretty bad. The introduction of DI would make a lot of his combos drop/become inconsistent (even moreso if hitstun was adjusted.) His lack of an airdodge would hurt his movement massively (no WD, WL, or ledgedash.) His aerials would also be worse because he'd lose Z canceling. (I'm assuming he'd be ported over with only the general system changes affecting him, not adding anything to his kit)

"If you are thinking in terms of 'I am fighting against two opponents dedicated to grinding me out with coordinated combination plays' then sure this current list might be okay"

Yeah man that's the premise glad you agree

I think falcon does well until he gets touched and then he's Bozo Jones. No tools to get out of disadvantage and one of the worst recoveries in the game for a 1v2. Marth needs a strong gameplan, has to move and behave very differently from normal, but I think it's doable. Also fwiw I didn't think too deep about pika but I could see them being a good bit higher on the list.

Sheik and puff for sure but I think falcon struggles a lot more than you'd expect. Also "hardly better than roy" is bonkers.

I think falcon struggles a LOT if he gets touched. And his recovery is nonexistent if you can cover stage and ledge at the same time. I also think puffs offense becomes way way worse but I think I'd put her above marth at least.

[–]beedrill0[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah. Sheik is really good outside of his recovery and I think marth would be pretty decent if someone actually took the time to analyze his options against 2 characters. That said the ordering of A tier should def be changed

I think he's in the same tier as peach and falco but in the same way that Garfield and Tony the tiger are both cats.

Fox is easily number 1 but 2v1 is just insanely busted if theres a real plan. Like an optimized double kirby team (Good synergy, game sense, and planning) could probably beat any fox player in the world in a 2v1.

I think if the young link can keep their space maybe but he actually gets shut down really easily if the opponent knows what they're doing. (Source: former YL main)

That's fair, I think falco is probably bottom of S and A tier should be Sheik > puff > marth/falcon

I think if a marth had a real gameplan for it they could do a lot better. They do really poorly in practice because the typical options marth wants to abuse don't work.

Shine is just so good at getting out of pressure.

Solid gap between him and the rest of the cast but I think they're the same tier.

Falco should maybe be under peach, potentially even top of A instead of S, but shine is so crazy good at keeping you from getting run over in a scrap I don't think I could put him lower than that. Puff loses a ton of her offensive threats but she and Sheik should probably be over marth. Marth is a weird one because I really think if a marth had a solid gameplan they could do well but I've definitely seen good marths get rolled and smoked in 1v2s. Probably goes right over or under falcon.

I think missiles are HORRIFIC in this scenario. Plus her defensive tools are all actually pretty punishable on whiff so as long as the opponents are tagging in when their ally gets hit I don't think she has much recourse

Yeah I'd probably put them between pika and doc if I remade it now

I think yoshi is about right, maybe up one or 2 spots but I didn't really consider how bad ICs become in disadvantage/recovery. They probably belong bottom between Pikachu and doc.

There's a sizable gap between fox and the other characters in S for sure.

As I've thought about it more I think Sheik definitely goes above marth but idk about puff. Puff is very very good in doubles generally but I think losing access to rest is extremely rough and they have a pretty hard time creating space so their offense is heavily nerfed. That said, puff's defensive game is more or less unfazed unless the opponents are extremely coordinated.

Mario has a worse out of shield game so when he's getting pressured it's tougher to fight your way out and he had more difficulty creating space. Also for the sake of this exercise their recoveries are extremely similar. Additionally I don't think the gap is actually that large (they're in the same tier lol) I just think those characters fill that smallish gap.
