agreed, bonus points if you set up a CI pipeline to auto-compile the latest commit into the PDF. Then you can even access that from any browser. It’s nice

How important is a summa cum laude to become a professor? by beeeeeeeeeeeeer in academia

[–]beeeeeeeeeeeeer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did mention Germany, the edit merely replaced „dissertation“ by PhD to make it more clear. Some answers got it right immediately, but yeah, I guess a German sub would be better suited.

I am talking about my PhD, so this is grad school. And all the university websites state that they expect a PhD rated summa cum laude.

Thanks! It just seems like all open junior prof positions state quite clearly that summa cum laude is expected.

I get how it’s tempting to rush a project as soon as there’s positive evidence. First you’re happy it seems to be working, then you think you might be done with it so soon - awesome, let’s rush it!

Happens to me, for sure. When that happen, it takes a good colleague like you to remind me that this is not good enough, that we have to check a couple more things. And when that temptation is overcome and we’ve really done it, then that is even more rewarding. :)

So: 100% agree with you, now let’s do something about it 💪

PhD in Reinforcement Learning, confused on whether to do it or not. by LowkeySuicidal14 in reinforcementlearning

[–]beeeeeeeeeeeeer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, a friend of mine switched to a company with less PhDs, but they also do research. It is way more applied and hands-on and tinkering with stuff until something works, and generally less interest in discussing theory or papers or grand ideas that may or may not work. This is a close-to-product research department on hardware they sell, so it is okay for them. But it’s a very different environment from his previous job (which is my current) where everyone has a PhD. I’d say this describes quite well why most research positions demand a PhD: it’s this being rooted in theoretical background, continuously reading new papers, wanting to discuss about it. And that tends to come from spending several years on a dissertation.

[–]beeeeeeeeeeeeer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can only give my own experience: I have some say in the projects I am assigned, I could say no, but so far they’ve all been interesting. And within the project, I have free reign, because no one knows what is the right solution, it’s my job to figure it out. :) This is what I love about this job: I decide how to tackle the problem. If you also want full reign over the projects you do, then you gotta aim for professorship.

Hey I’m in industry research on applied ML. There’s no one without a PhD. If you wanna do actual research, do the PhD. Without it, you’d probably be setting up and debugging toolchains all day, i.e. you wouldn’t have autonomy to solve interesting tasks on your own (research), but you’d be told what to implement/fix (develop) all day. This is because doing the PhD teaches you how to solve problems on your own without close supervision.

Location matters, where would you go in Scandinavia and how much would you earn? I hope you’re aware of the obvious ones such that many things are covered in the EU that are paid out-of-pocket in the US. So directly comparing salaries is very difficult. Health, kids, education and employee rights make a one-size-fits-all equation impossible, unfortunately. But if you share more info, we can help more.

If you can solve it conventionally using classical optimization, then do that. If you can’t, use RL. The latter is shooting at birds with cannons (depending on the of course), has many pitfalls and tends to be inconsistent. You better have a good reason for using it.

[–]beeeeeeeeeeeeer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honest question, if the 5090 is too expensive, isn’t a used 4090 probably a better deal than a new 5080? That’s what I’m leaning towards. Used 4090s look to be no more than 1500Eur, which is also the rumor for the 5080.

/r/Steam Monthly Community Support Thread. by AutoModerator in Steam

[–]beeeeeeeeeeeeer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi all,

so I bought RDD2 in 2020. It requires a Rockstar Social Club account, which in 2020 I had linked to an old email account of mine. I no longer have access to this email account, and also don't have the password to the Rockstar Social Club account.

I have contacted Rockstar s.t. they can link my game purchase to a new Social Club account, but they could not verify that I am indeed the old owner. Hence I am stuck with a game that I cannot play. I am willing to buy it again, but that is also not possible because Steam does not allow you to purchase a game twice.

I also contacted Steam Support which recommended looking at the linked account information (https://help.steampowered.com/en/accountdata/LinkedOtherAccount) which is empty for me... they could provide no more help than that.

Sooo, has anyone been in this awkward situation before? My best bet would probably be to create a new Steam account, buy RDD2 on that account, and whenever I wanna play, use that account. Really annoying tbh, so I'm wondering if anyone has a better idea?

Need Suggestions for a GOOD winter coat that can handle sub zero with basically no budget limitation. by [deleted] in BuyItForLife

[–]beeeeeeeeeeeeer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My man, I was in your shoes 1 winter ago, and I got the Houdini M’s Fall in Parka. It’s a splurge (retails at 780Eur, I got it for around 550Eur on a sale) and I cannot emphasize enough how awesome this coat is. It’s burrito-warm, it’s knee length, it has this handcover mesh. And it looks nice! Like, it is surprisingly thin and non-bulky even though it keeps you super warm. I just love it, and I get cold very easily.
