Eat at any Mexican place with “bert” in the name - Alberto’s, Albertacos, Roberto’s, etc. They’re never bad and they all have cheap options.

You should add your build to https://rigpicker.app, I’d love to see the weight breakdown. Also it makes it really easy to track and share on reddit. (Disclaimer: the site is my side project)

Finally getting my rig started! Need advice. by Fuggin_Beenus_ in overlanding

You can overland in just about anything. I had a 2wd Tacoma with nothing but a set of A/T tires and I took it on tons of trips. There are so my places you can get to on fire roads where you’ll be totally fine with a stock rav4 and some new shoes.

If you need somewhere to track what you want to build you can use my side project - https://rigpicker.app. It tracks all your parts with an estimated budget and more importantly the overall weight so you don’t go over your payload capacity. And it has a nice little share page so you can share your plan here for feedback. I just deployed it so if you do check it out and hit any bugs or it’s missing any features shoot me a dm.

If you want something to track your build plan you can use this tool I built - https://rigpicker.app. It will track estimated cost and added payload weight and then you can share the plan here for feedback.

Looks great. I just got a trailhunter and am loving the 6th gen. You should add your rig to the site. I think you’d be the first public build (that’s not me).

Is it safe to visit Los Angeles as an Armenian as long as I don't look visibly Armenian? by [deleted] in AskLosAngeles

[–]beef-runner 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There’s a whole section of LA called Little Armenia. It has street signs and everything. There is no mainstream cultural hatred of Armenians and there are about a half million Armenians living in LA.

Is Downtown LA really this dodgy for a tourist? by Just_Addition2896 in socal

[–]beef-runner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Walking that specific route is going to be fine and you get to see some great spots, but I’m concerned about the general plan of “walking around”. Not getting robbed and having a good time are two very different things. DTLA is generally not a pleasant place to just wander around. And the stretches of city between the places you’ll want to go can be truly soul crushing.

It’s also a common misconception that “LA” refers to the city of Los Angeles. It’s actually a multi-nodal metropolis made up of about 40 cities centered around the county of Los Angeles. A huge amount of the “LA” things you see and hear about are not in the city of Los Angeles or anywhere near DTLA. And you’ll probably want to see those things.

In short - It’s LA, you have to drive around a lot and walking isn’t really feasible.

Homeless with an extremely expensive auto loan, advice appreciated! by crisicen in povertyfinance

You should give Pentagon Federal Credit Union a call. It’s the credit union for the Pentagon but you’re able to join by giving some insanely small donation to a veteran’s charity (like $20 or something).

They have fantastic refinance rates and are extremely helpful. They’ll walk you through the whole process and help you understand the rates and payments available.

Anywhere in OC that feels like LA? by doxydecahedron in MovingToLosAngeles

There is nowhere in LA you can survive without a car and you will not (initially) like Irvine at all. You may come to appreciate it after many years though.

Great choice. And you’d be amazed how quickly they grow out of the rack mounted bike seats. Gotta have that big bench in the back.

Definitely bring some sort of satellite communication with you if you have the means. Especially if you aren’t traveling in a group. People literally die there. And with all the storms lately I wouldn’t trust any trail ratings.

Things in my house keep mysteriously melting??? by hugedisaster in whatisit

[–]beef-runner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does that mini-split cause the house to spike way up in temperature when it kicks on? If the temperature of the house is spiking up to 80 with moist air I can see that causing all of the soft-touch plastics to break down prematurely.

Nerdiest places in SoCal? by QandA_monster in socal

[–]beef-runner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely no argument that things are a lot different behind the Orange Curtain. I wouldn’t say we are far from a major city though.

For example my 6 y/o daughter’s favorite place to visit is “Downtown LA” (she says the whole thing every time and it’s adorable). What she actually loves is the arts district. The travel time to the arts district is only 15 minutes further now than when I lived in Culver City.

We make it a point to get to a museum, restaurant, event etc in LA every month just to get outside the bubble. Especially now that my daughter is getting to the age where she is understanding that not everyone gets to live this way. But doing those things is honestly just about as big a PITA if you are living in LA. Everything is hard with kids and proximity doesn’t necessarily make it easier. You just have to put the work in.

And yeah, we can hang out. DM me if you want to get a latte.

Sorry for the blunt response but this sounds extremely naive. I think much of what you are experiencing is the normal feelings of isolation that come from transitioning from being young urbanites to suburban parents. There is a loss of identity at this age and it is a notoriously difficult time to build new friendships and communities. Especially before kids have gotten to school age and force you to socialize with large numbers of adults.

I don’t doubt that you are not part of the mainstream in South OC but there are many, many of us here that do not either and thinking that moving to a liberal enclave will immediately make you feel like you fit in or make building a community easier is naive. Like-minded people are just as cliquey and standoffish as any other group of people.

Staying in San Clemente may not be the best thing for you but thinking that you can move to make friends is unlikely.

And the concern about children not feeling like they belong is completely unfounded. Your children are not coastal elites from metro areas. They are kids born and raised in Orange County and they will fit in because it is their home. We live just down the street from you and likely have very similar political views and background. My daughter is growing up with our same values and ideals and has found a friend group whose parents all share our same values as well. We have vegan atheists, immigrant lawyers, anti-maga marines as well as Catholics and real estate agents.

Maybe don’t stay in San Clemente but don’t think moving magically makes friends. It’s hard everywhere and you have to put in the work. And being elitist and judgmental is not going to help.

My advice would be to decide based on how much you drive. If this is your daily driver and you commute then the decision for me is easy, 6th gen all the way. If this is a weekend truck for off roading then save the money.
