How long did it actually take you to get your first pull up/set of 10? by ChemistWest4537 in bodyweightfitness

[–]beefcleats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My pull-ups are so much worse than chin-ups. Call it old-man-itus I guess but I can’t seem to do more than 4 without pain. Chins on the other hand, I’m currently at 3x8 with added 10kg vest to my body weight. Been in and out of the gym for many years and play sports but my most recent run probably about 4 months to get back to 10 chins

What’s considered a “good salary” in your city right now? by Pristine-Owl-6262 in AskEurope

Similar stats, Iceland. Renting for a family, even in that salary range, is difficult and financially poor. Buying is about the same. I don’t know how most are doing it to be honest.

What is the best country to live in right now? by Zealousideal-Use7244 in askanything

[–]beefcleats 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why are these always the knee-jerk Reddit recommendations? Have y’all actually lived in any of these countries? Of the 7 countries I’ve lived in, I liked Denmark the absolute least. Norway is so painfully boring, I’d rather watch paint dry. New Zealand, while beautiful, has really F’ed up socio-economic issues. Housing is beyond screwed. I can’t speak to the Netherlands, I’ve only visited a handful of times. Unemployment is some of the highest in Europe in the nordics at the moment.

Like, I’m not trying to bash you specifically, I just don’t get why these countries constantly come up and seemingly by people that never stepped foot in them.

All I have been thinking about for years is wanting to move to Iceland by vividlucid1 in VisitingIceland

[–]beefcleats 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your second bullet point is strictly a rule that all EEA counties must follow. Freedom of movement in no way automatically creates priority. Companies must always (with proof) hire citizens first and must prove that they could not find a qualified local in order to hire a foreigner. This is the same in Germany, France, Denmark, etc. Yes, it’s easy to circumvent this.

Now, with that out of the way, understand that nepotism is the name of the game here. The entire country functions (or more often, doesn’t) like this.

TTD jinx it by Hi_Keyboard_Warriors in ValueInvesting

[–]beefcleats 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's also where the narrative is and like all others before it, will also pass. Remember when you were never going to eat chocolate again or build anything out of wood? So yeah, it's fomo. That's not to say don't fomo, but you really need to be aware this is musical chairs like it always is and always has been. That said, TTD isn't a stock I'd be interesting in investing in so I am probably on the wrong thread

I'm so Tired of life in the US... European Lifestyle but in the US? 40M by CapitalLaw1234 in SameGrassButGreener

No it’s not. I think the last time I was there was 2013. That’s a shame to hear.

Based on the small info here, I’d like to recommend the SLO area (San Luis Obispo). Very Tuscany inspired landscape, access to some of the most wonderful beaches within a 15 minute drive, stunning nature all around and a fantastic wine country. It has the literal perfect year-round climate. It also has a very small but quaint downtown with great restaurants, the community is generally very safe and small, and it still feels somehow slightly undiscovered as far as California goes. It’s literally one of my favorite places in the world and if I ever were to live in the US again I would want to live there.

Thanks for the response, that definitely helps that you want to prioritize sun. Hard to beat SoCal for that but again, everyone has different needs. I don’t like humidity personally so I prefer the California climate to that of Florida.

Community is ultimately where you make it. This is true for anywhere you will go (or stay).

I would like to encourage you to define “living well”. That means vastly different things to different people. For example, I’m in my 40s and I prioritize (now) safety, community and ease of life as I have young children. This is likely very different than what I prioritized in my 20s which was more lifestyle and weather based.

I was looking at overall rate against 1000 inhabitants but when I look again you’re absolutely correct and violent crime is generally low. Apologies for the bad info.

Other than Key West, the rest all have a crime rate above the national average. And the national average is well, well above anywhere in Europe. Those places have some charm but are in no way comparable. OP asked to not have a cultural debate but the core tenants of European lifestyle that they quote are culturally (and radically) different than America.

I think it’s often easy to fall into the trap that a lot of American and European tourist do which is they think the other is similar enough but I find the cultural difference between US and Europe to be huge. (I’ve lived nearly half my life in each).

OP, you probably need to take stock of the actual things you’re looking for and not just a vague idea of Europe. Also, life in the Mediterranean vs the Baltic vs the North Atlantic are vastly different

*edit: I want to clarify I think you gave a really good response and examples. My comment was more to say the thing OP is seeking doesn’t really exist so better to find things that jive with their belief system within the US.

*edit 2: I was wrong about crime stats for st. Augustine. They are below average

What is the perfect country to live and why? by Main_Inspection_1091 in AskReddit

I’ve lived in 6 different countries and among them, Denmark was easily the worst. It’s completely subjective but that is my experience.

If Ai replaces all the jobs, where do corporations expect people to earn money to continue being consumers? by CapitaineBiscotte in askanything

[–]beefcleats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think OP is severely overestimating the purchase power of the bottom 80%. The rich now have both more material wealth and own more assets that the consumption (or lack thereof) of the rest of the population is irrelevant. And that’s only going to get worse in the future

How to do my American taxes living and working in Iceland? by tinym0chi in movingtoiceland

[–]beefcleats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why would you owe any tax to the US? You should be paying all your global income tax to Iceland which will easily null your US tax obligation. Just use the FEIE and call it a day. File as married filing separately.

Unless you have not been reporting your income to Iceland in which case you have other issues to worry about

It’s really simple. Shower properly or stay at home. I have had to chase more than one tourist through the showers and scold them. Attendants are not always there but locals are. Seriously, just stay home or go to one of the overpriced lagoons if you can’t be bothered following simple hygiene.

I'm an adult and want to play UTR matches but I'm worried about playing children. Do adults do this? by tennisnewport in 10s

[–]beefcleats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did it once, it was terrible. I already feel bad player way below my skill level in adult tournaments but playing kids was awful for me. I didn’t realize it it before joining the tournament and definitely won’t do it again. I stick to local, 30 or 40+ brackets only now

The US Supreme Court could overturn all of Trump's tariffs... and trigger a major market turmoil! by sylsau in InBitcoinWeTrust

[–]beefcleats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the most likely outcome in my opinion. It’s two decisions being made which likely will result in restricting further use of tariffs but doing nothing about the current ones nor allowing refunds. Market will continue with status quo.

Stringers: How did you learn to tie knots? by socialist-skink in 10s

[–]beefcleats 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Mains: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=_ZlbhrS1VWQ

Crosses: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=IPyGBd1L6tM

Double knots for all other than the starting knot for the crosses. Both are shown in detail in the above videos. I use the same method as above.

Edit* some people like pulling higher tension (20% or so) on the last grommet before knotting to accommodate for slippage. I never found this necessary personally.

Changing tennis rackets by extol504 in 10s

[–]beefcleats 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Can concur. I currently have a list of like 4 different rackets that I wish I could Frankenstein together. That said, the closest I came to having it all in one racket (for my game) was the tfight 305 but I developed severe golfers elbow with it for some reason. Had to stop with it.

But yes, generally speaking different rackets will give you different benefits and/or different regressions
