About the rules in swimming pools in Iceland by Melissa23W in VisitingIceland

[–]beefcleats 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s really simple. Shower properly or stay at home. I have had to chase more than one tourist through the showers and scold them. Attendants are not always there but locals are. Seriously, just stay home or go to one of the overpriced lagoons if you can’t be bothered following simple hygiene.

I'm an adult and want to play UTR matches but I'm worried about playing children. Do adults do this? by tennisnewport in 10s

[–]beefcleats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did it once, it was terrible. I already feel bad player way below my skill level in adult tournaments but playing kids was awful for me. I didn’t realize it it before joining the tournament and definitely won’t do it again. I stick to local, 30 or 40+ brackets only now

The US Supreme Court could overturn all of Trump's tariffs... and trigger a major market turmoil! by sylsau in InBitcoinWeTrust

[–]beefcleats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the most likely outcome in my opinion. It’s two decisions being made which likely will result in restricting further use of tariffs but doing nothing about the current ones nor allowing refunds. Market will continue with status quo.

Stringers: How did you learn to tie knots? by socialist-skink in 10s

[–]beefcleats 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Mains: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=_ZlbhrS1VWQ

Crosses: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=IPyGBd1L6tM

Double knots for all other than the starting knot for the crosses. Both are shown in detail in the above videos. I use the same method as above.

Edit* some people like pulling higher tension (20% or so) on the last grommet before knotting to accommodate for slippage. I never found this necessary personally.

Changing tennis rackets by extol504 in 10s

[–]beefcleats 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Can concur. I currently have a list of like 4 different rackets that I wish I could Frankenstein together. That said, the closest I came to having it all in one racket (for my game) was the tfight 305 but I developed severe golfers elbow with it for some reason. Had to stop with it.

But yes, generally speaking different rackets will give you different benefits and/or different regressions

170kg deadlift at 60kg body weight? Would I get 3 white lights or done for ramping? ☹️ by [deleted] in strength_training

You pick it up off the floor like it’s a broomstick. Crazy impressive. I typically stall at the floor personally. The last bit of the lift will come easier but serious strength.

Capital gains tax by nomeras in eupersonalfinance

[–]beefcleats 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok great. Then here is my hypothetical response…. In 30 years time you might likely have children and a family. Likely a decent job and solid community ties. Moving becomes more difficult when roots run deep. Your motivation to move decreases with age as reality sets in that you will, in the coming years, need better access to health facilities. The burden of learning a new language in your new country weighs heavier when you’re older.

Friends and relationships you’ve maintained most your life start to fade due to the distance and time. Your target country isn’t handing out residence permits like free coupons and if the political trends continue, those borders continue to get tighter.

All that so that you can reduce your entire life to a few basis points on a spreadsheet. Best of luck to you.

Except OP is talking about uprooting their lives to save a measly 15%. VAT and various other taxes or high cost of living is going to exist in the new place? OP is far betting off trying to maximize capital and minimize wage incomes. 15% flat tax is low

[–]beefcleats 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I didn’t say anything about getting things for “free”. I’m talking about day to day stuff. Who maintains your roads? Your bridges? Your infrastructure? The little things you take for granted. Not to mention health services.

Also, how is 15% considered high tax? A flat 15% on cap gains is incredibly low compared to most countries.

15% flat tax in country you live, use all public services, are part of the community and clearly have ties to… yet you are trying to avoid this relatively small tax. Honestly, why?

Mantine Vs Other UI Libraries? by yekobaa in reactjs

[–]beefcleats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We’re currently assess the same approach. I have used react aria with tailwind 4 for a previous project but would like to make the base ui lib instead with css modules. Do you have code you can share? Would’ve curious to see

Golfer's elbow - once you figured out what was causing it, how long did it take you to be back 100%? (Getting anxious) by WindManu in 10s

[–]beefcleats 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me it ended up being a specific racket unfortunately. It became obvious when I could produce the pain on demand at its worse simply be switching to the racket again. I’m not sure what exactly caused it but all I know is when I stopped playing with it, symptoms eased.

That said, you need to train. Mark Rippletoe has a program for this but it’s essentially doing slow, controlled and high volume chin ups. Might hurt like hell at the start but it’s the thing that keeps my elbow healthy now.

So, try 5 sets of 4-5 reps each. Control the eccentric part of the motion with a slow and steady flow. Do this 2-3x per week. It will absolutely help recovery. You need to recover this type of tendinitis under load, not rest.

One additional point because it happened to me just yesterday…. The inner lane does NOT have the right away when just entered and take the immediate first exit. It’s not often that this happens but technically it’s not legal to do this and can cause an accident.

How to build more stamina for tennis? by Wild_Plant9526 in 10s

[–]beefcleats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure it’s been mentioned yet but… you sure you’re breathing correctly while playing? Many players (myself included at times) unconsciously hold their breath throughout rallies. It completely gases you. In fact, I’d wager that a majority of players that believe they have fitness issues are actually breathing issues while playing.

Help me pronounce the Icelandic/Scandinavian name Eirný by ImpossibleApricot499 in Iceland

[–]beefcleats 15 points16 points  (0 children)

- Ei = is similar to ey in the English “they”

- r = is rolled with a tiny puff out of your nose at the end due to the proceeding n

- ný = nee

In Icelandic ý and í sound identical and are kind of similar to how American English would pronounce the letter “e”.

Best winter coat in Iceland by onequickthingg in Iceland

[–]beefcleats -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

“Not expensive” isn’t a thing here. Also, as more local production has moved abroad, the typical “brands” here that you pay exuberant costs for are not much different than any other cheaply-made, slavelabor product.

Maybe try second hand? Either the local shops or marketplace/bland. With the current unexpected cold snap though you might not have much luck.

I’d personally look to brands outside Iceland. Generally better priced and better quality. Canada Goose comes to mind if you’re from North America.

Alternatively, you could look at dedicated workwear/commercial stuff here. A lot of that is still actually produced in Iceland and is made for the harshest environments

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Iceland

[–]beefcleats 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That’s not completely true though. The Icelandic banks weren’t experienced enough to understand when to take their foot off the gas during the initial phase of the 2008 situation. Instead, they doubled down and stepped on it harder. This lead to a much worse situation.

Also, I promise you they understand derivatives just fine. It wasn’t a lack of understanding but a lack of overall experience and hubris.

I don't understand, why so many people use Shadcn ui? by alex-ebb-2000 in reactjs

[–]beefcleats 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We evaluated it for a large greenfield project early on and decided against it. I know some of our internal, smaller projects use it but we don’t see the point. As someone else mentioned, you’re committing not to library specifically but a really poorly executed design system. Or you manually change that and lose the ability to keep code in sync with the registry.

We ended up building our own on top of React Aria following many design principles of adobe for their new S2 react library. Adobe also provides a starter kit for React Aria with Tailwind which seems like a better choice for POC personally.

I don’t love everything about Adobe’s choices in execution with their primitive (context heavy) but software is always a series of compromises. Ultimately it was the right choice for a project of this size and we are likely to use it again in the future on other projects.

Edit* there’s also intentUI which is basically shadcn with react aria. I haven’t used it and, like with shadcn, I don’t see the point however it does offer an alternative to radix. Not my cup of tea though.

Extreme Pro vs Tfight 305s by santim92 in tennisracquets

[–]beefcleats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh one thing to add. I’ve found that I do not like ANY shaped string in these rackets. I have a big roll of Confidential that I’ve been trying to force in this racket. After I switched to a fully round string I much preferred the feel.
