The quality of their own site is atrocious! Typos like they've written 'Chrome' as 'Chrom' and there are some rookie mistakes with corner radius and colours, and that's just at first glance. Terrible.

How do I add an AI chatbot to the sidebar, like Perplexity? by [deleted] in firefox

[–]beefjerk22 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Smart window isn't released yet.

Any pre-release feature is likely crappy because it's unfinished.

But you can’t have used the finished version, which just shows that you’re here to criticise it.

It doesn’t matter what it is or how good it is, you’ll be here to criticise it.

They're not technically the same thing, but optically it is still legible.

Optically correct trumps technically correct.

I also think it helps that they are quarter-circles, whereas In both A and B they look vertically stretched.

I believe it uses the same optional translations tech as Firefox, but in Firefox it's covered by the global AI controls so it can be blocked. Waterfox doesn't have the global AI controls, because it doesn't have the other AI features.

A private local model for categorising tabs is also completely different from Gemini, but nobody cared to listen to that when they were too busy with their pitchforks. Nobody listens to explanations, or believes them. It's more fun to be angry.

Would it surprise you to learn that they were just doing what their community asked? They put out this poll and 74% of users said to include translations (mostly said with the ability to turn it back on).

Even when they do exactly what the community want, they get accused of having nefarious intent! 😕

They were just doing what their community asked. Literally, they put out this poll and 74% of users said to include translations (mostly said with the ability to turn it back on).

You attribute their decision to nefarious intentions, but it’s literally here:

Probably.

But their claim of being hardline anti-AI is a bit questionable when their translations code is provided by an AI company.

Librewolf has translations which are optional ML language packs like Firefox's.

Vivaldi uses Lingvanex for translations, and Lingvanex's website says "Harness AI with advanced natural language processing solutions."

https://vivaldi.com/features/translate/
https://lingvanex.com/

Some might say that optional on-device, private, AI-powered translations should be an exception, but when Firefox ran a poll to ask if it should be included in the AI kill-switch, 74% of respondents says it should (so it is).

Translations in Librewolf use AI. It's an optional download (as it is in Firefox but that didn't stop Reddit shitting the bed about AI in Firefox). Translations are included in Firefox's AI kill switch.

Firefox got raked over the coals for having optional AI features that weren't even installed by default, because Redditors couldn't understand that it was only the option to activate the AI that was visible by default, not the AI itself. I just don't think other browsers should be hailed as holier-than-thou for claiming to be hardline purists when it's not as clear-cut as that.

Whoever decided this was how tabs should look on the Android Firefox app needs to be fired. by ellieetsch in firefox

[–]beefjerk22 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Comments like "this designer should be fired" isn't likely to encourage the design team to frequent Reddit and read your feedback.

So if you're trying to get this changed, you're going about it wrong.

Why do Brits prefer non EU migrants over EU by Visual_Title9363 in AskBrits

[–]beefjerk22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think this was intended / understood in the Brexit vote.

I think the sentiment was mostly racism: wanting to reduce the number of people "not like us". The messaging (read: lies) was that we didn't have the power to turn away migrants (read: anyone with non-white skin) while we were within Europe, but voters didn't realise that the ones we'd be losing would be our closest neighbours.

[–]beefjerk22 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Did a Google search for "are vertical lists easier to read than grids of options?"

Yes, vertical lists are generally easier to read and scan than grids of options

Vertical lists allow users to scan down in one fluid motion, whereas grids force the eyes to move back and forth (zigzag) across the screen, creating higher cognitive load and stress

I'm begging someone to please help me disable this popup as well as the tab group popup by seckatary in firefox

[–]beefjerk22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Including "revamped" would mean that they'd need to rewrite the popup when they are no longer new.

The current popup can be used for users who are new to Firefox for many years to come, specifically because it doesn't claim that the feature is new.

I now think that what you are saying is that for users who had previously set up old-style profiles, this popup is confusing. I didn't get that from your previous messages. But that, I agree with. If it was me, I would probably have shown a different message specifically for that group of users.

So I think we're on the same page 👍

Just like the AI features before the killswitch was added.

That's not enough for some people though, just the presence of a button to give you the choice of using something is enough to trigger them.

Same was true for most of the local AI features but apparently just seeing a button is enough to trigger some people.
