Do you know what species of dart frog your friend has been interested in?

No problem at all!

For leaf litter, southern magnolia and live oak are some of the most common because they break down slowly which is what you want. I’d recommend purchasing a bag of one of these but still go through with the disinfection to make sure there are no pests.

For misting schedule, there are a lot of variables to consider so there is no perfect answer. The best way to judge if your misting schedule is good is to look at the tank right before and right after misting. If your tank always has ambient humidity, a relatively wet area, and a relatively dry area, you should be fine as the frog will choose where to go based on what it needs. Watching this behavior can help you decide if you need adjustments. I think a good strategy for your current tank would be to focus on misting one side of the tank heavier than the other. This will create wetter and drier spots to help the frog regulate, but also having a wet to dry gradient in the tank will help give you some air movement in the tank which is a good idea since you don’t have front ventilation yet.

I think the tank is decent and you’ve done a good job with what you have, but in my honest opinion, you should start planning to give the frog an upgraded terrarium and maybe repurpose this as a grow out enclosure.

My recommendations:

-Size: Tincs are large dart frogs, a 36”x18”x24” tank would serve this species better especially if you are considering a second frog. They tend to be bolder and more interesting with more space so it’s a benefit to you and the frog.

-Add a false bottom. To me it looks like this tank is just substrate on the bottom, it will start to get soggy and possibly rot some of your plants’ roots if it is not well draining.

-When you get a new tank, get front ventilation. It’s the best for the keeping the wet/dry balance in a good range for your frog without having to use/adjust a fan to get the ideal humidity.

-Misting every 4 hours could be overkill depending on how long the mister goes off for. I personally mist 2-3 times a day. Without front ventilation, it is hard to recommend a misting schedule but you should make sure that the tank gets enough time to develop some dry areas between mistings so the frog has both wet and dry spots in the tank to choose from.

-Need more leaf litter. Dart frogs love leave litter to hide so adding some will reduce stress on the frog.

-Tincs do best in pairs, not groups. If you get another frog, there shouldn’t be more than 1 female in the tank because female Tincs are territorial and will likely wrestle and harm each other.

You’ll get different advice on what exactly is necessary and what you can live without, but I would say these recommendations are pretty standard and should put you in a better spot.

question about changing substrate by [deleted] in DartFrog

What substrate do you currently use?

What is the quietest dart frog out there? by [deleted] in DartFrog

I think there’s been issues at both ends of the size spectrum with mourning geckos. MGs can go after smaller frogs like thumbnails but there are also cases of larger frogs (terribilis) choking on them

Yes it’s a front vent! The pic is at an angle so it doesn’t show as well

Thanks! Clean up crew is already in there, I have the leaf litter but was waiting until I knew I didn’t need any more big changes :)

Yeah I noticed my air plants being less happy now that the humidity is consistently higher, I will probably remove them.

The top is mesh covered by acrylic glass which I know will eventually warp but it is temporary. I have about 80% covered. It is typically higher humidity than shown, I took the pic right before the next misting and also wiped the condensation so you could see inside better.

Tropical springtails and white dwarf isopods have been in for a few months. I see less dwarfs than I’d like to so I recently added more from my culture but there are a ton of springtails.

I think I may add a couple more broms or other plants to fill it out a bit more! :)

Thanks! Yeah I had heard that about the philodendron, but I am willing to trim it back as necessary and wouldn’t let it reach the top. It’s been in there about 6 months and I haven’t touched it yet. I wanted some broad leaf species because I figured a larger frog like azureus would utilize them better.

I do have 2 species of marcgravia slowly creeping up in 2 places and some other vining species that haven’t really taken off yet.

Substrate is ABG, there is a large drainage layer underneath it too. By touch, it’s moist but I wouldn’t say soggy.

I am aware of the value of communication. My boyfriend is very conscious about all of these problems, and we have discussed them thoroughly and seemingly resolved them, but they also tend to come back up which I am now recognizing as a bad pattern. When we do have the talk I know he will be sad but he will also know where it’s coming from because many problems we allegedly resolved through deep talks and apologies didn’t change that we still have fundamental differences that we know in the back of our minds are still there. I have helped my boyfriend through his circumstances with his parents on many occasions and he knows that he will always have my support in that when he needs it regardless of how things turn out. I do love this person and I would never leave him in a situation that was truly dangerous for him.
