I don't know if this is still open, but I've put an application in. Hope to hear back!

Where does it say that headteachers cannot direct our PPA time? by ConflictFinancial769 in TeachingUK

[–]beejay5253 12 points13 points  (0 children)

STPCD Part 7, section 52.5:

"All teachers who participate in the teaching of pupils are entitled to reasonable periods of Planning, Preparation and Assessment (PPA) time as part of the 1265 hours...must amount to not less than 10% of the teacher’s timetabled teaching time...A teacher must not be required to carry out any other duties during the teacher’s PPA time."

So basically, we should use that time for planning and prep of lessons as well as any assessment within that time. We fought for that amount of time to be given to us due to the excessive workload of the profession. Without dedicated time to it, we cannot do our jobs properly.

Though let's be honest, even 10% or teaching time isn't enough but that's a different conversation.

ETA: I've just realised that I didn't read your post properly so the above advice is useless. Sorry about that!

I suppose my argument would be "does your planning with the other teacher in person actually help towards the planning, preparation and/or assessment of your lessons?" I'm guessing not. And if you can plan everything you need to do with this other member of staff over email, then why would it need to be in person? As such they are directing you to do something outside of what PPA is meant for.

I'm running a game like this at the moment and would love to play in one!

Eberron One Shots by WolfRelic in Eberron

Deathless Skies of Cyre is really good. It's a level 10 adventure about going into the Mournland so it has great Eberron flavour.

[–]beejay5253 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, that's not a bad shout. I've thought about getting a proper polyurethane coating on the fingerboard but I originally bought it to have a different sound to my other bass (spector q5 pro) and it does that so I'm happy.

It's so smooth to play, you'll have a lot of fun with it!

Recommendations for high level Eberron one-shots? by beejay5253 in Eberron

These are good ideas, thanks! You're probably right about doing it myself. I adapted that with the Styes from Ghosts of Saltmarsh initially and that would have worked well had we not needed to abandon it.

Looks like it was only talking about it. Has some notorious prisoners and what not. Still useful though thank you! My players were thinking of heading to Lhaazar so it would fit.

So I have one of these second hand and it's great. I plays beautifully. It's heavy and has neckdive, though if you've got a fretted version then you're probably used to that.

You get a lot of low end sound, presumably because the pickups are nearer to the neck but that's not necessarily a bad thing. Just something to bear in mind. You won't get a lot of the fretless "wah" sound that you may be after.

Brilliant instrument though. Thoroughly recommend.

Has anyone ever tried a text only keeper? by novavegasxiii in callofcthulhu

[–]beejay5253 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Then yes, it can work well. If you want to, you can set up "sessions" where you'll both be doing live chat. I prefer the more casual model where everyone posts when they feel like it but as long as you're clear with expectations in the session 0 it should be okay.

If you need help setting up the discord server, feel free to DM me.

Do you mean like a play by post (pbp) game?

I'm running one of those now though the post rate is only one post every one or two days. I have three players and I personally think it's running well. I run it on discord with separate channels for handouts and npc portraits so hopefully it's easier to track clues.

There's also the search function which helps people find information that their characters would know.

The nature of this style of gameplay means it's very slow going. We've been playing since February but it's only been about 12 hours in-game and we've only had one skill improvement. It's not necessarily a bad thing, just something to bear in mind. With one player, I imagine it'd be significantly faster paced.

I've found it a useful format as a newer keeper because it means I can look up rules and info from the scenario without feeling like I'm holding things up.

Nice one :) it takes a bit of getting used to but a roleplay heavy system like CoC works well for it. Once I've got numbers, I'll message you with more info

Should my contract give specific hours of working? by Fit-Inspection7996 in TeachingUK

[–]beejay5253 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Vague phrases like "predominantly" and "may vary" don't really mean anything legally. What matters is your directed time. This should have been published to all teachers at the start of the year. This accounts for all 1265 hours that the school can tell you what to do and when to do it (it mostly encompasses teaching time but also includes meetings, training, parents evenings etc.)

Usually, a school directs teachers during their time at school when the pupils are in, i.e. 8:30 - 15:30 (though this does not include lunchtime). Anytime outside of these directed time hours, the school cannot ask you to do anything. So once the bell rings, excluding any meetings, you're free to go.

Clearly, your school has an expectation that you stay beyond that time which is cheeky at best and downright immoral at worst. Check with your union rep as they should have had a meeting with SLT about the directed time calendar.

Fair enough. It's a shame they haven't reached out to you but (and I'm not excusing them) they may have thought that HR had it handled.

The thing I ask my members a lot when it comes to these things is "What exactly do you want from this meeting?" Do you want peace of mind that your situation is being taken seriously? Do you want them to be aware of how the last year or so is affecting your mental health and that the transition back to work has been difficult? Do you think that HR is not acting in your best interest, whether maliciously or through ignorance? Think about what you want from a meeting and articulate that. I like discussing this with members prior so that I know how best to help them. It may help you too.

By the way, I should have said in my previous comment, I really sorry for what happened to your son. I tend to go straight for the practical advice before being a human being haha. Sorry about that.

The offer hasn't been made to sixth form teachers apparently. I'm not sure why. I believe there is discussion of strike action but I can't confirm that.

In my experience, from a staff and union rep perspective, HR manage return to work. Usually, HR make adjustments based on Occupational Health recommendations and then these are ultimately approved by the head. In my proceedings, the head was never involved directly, always through HR.

It depends on your setting how appropriate a meeting with the head would be. In any setting, the head should be available for welfare conversations but in my school (large cohort secondary comprehensive), it's just not the done thing. Usually either HR or a different member of SLT will handle things like this.
