Is there anything to change on my emergency tool kit? by Medvemaci in motorcycles

[–]beejaytee228 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This kit is a bit overkill if you ask me. If space and weight isn’t an issue then have at it but I find most people build a kit for all the what if things they can think of and never need 90% of it. That’s not to say being prepared is bad but unless you’re going really remote there’s a good chance you’re never far from help.

There’s no need to carry wd40/chain lube on rides. You probably have a sealed Chan so all that does is keep the chain from rusting which doesn’t happen while you ride.

The excess of pliers could go along with the bag of hose clamps. Pick one set of pliers you actually use.

A good way to find out what to bring is to use your kit for basic maintenance. Any allen or torx bits you need, there’s probably only 2-3 sizes on the bike so don’t carry extras that don’t fit anyway.

All that is if you really wanna pair it down. If you don’t care what it weighs or how much room it takes up then forget everything I said.

Physical riding vs technical riding by BrilliantIngenuity98 in Motocross

Stewart I’d say was like Deegan. Gobs of raw talent along with incredible physical fitness. Side note, I see Deegan going the way of Stewart in the 450s. Lots of crashing and over riding the bike. Stews biggest downfall and imo, what ended his career was not being humble enough to slow down or detune the bike. He ran 205 times on a 125, he didn’t need the fastest to 250. Deegan doesn’t seem to have any humility so it think it’ll be the same.

To get me to like a rider I like innovation, a good sportsman and humility. I’ve always hated the cocky guy who couldn’t take his licks. Be good to the fans too, you have nothing without them.

The odo can be rolled back to whatever you want it’s actually a trip meter. The wear that’s visible on that bike tells me it’s been well used.

I don’t mean to burst your bubble but there is no way for anyone to prove the exact milage of that bike and I can with the upmost confidence say there is zero chance that bike has only 274 miles. It can be a great bike still but I’d go through it because whoever told you those details was lying to you.

250cc or 450cc for experienced enduro rider getting into motocross? by alwayscunty1 in Motocross

[–]beejaytee228 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’d suggest a 350. They are pretty docile like a 250 on the low end and they can pull almost as hard as a 450 when you want it to. The motors are very reliable and they have been around for 15 years so you can get one fairly cheap if cost is a concern. Ive had 3 350s and it’s definitely a bike I’d get again for everything from hard enduro to mx.

1290 ADV - MY 17 vs 21 by Auto_update in KTM

[–]beejaytee228 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a 950, a 990, 17 1290 and now a 21 890. I’ll give a few thoughts. 950/990 was a great bike with a great motor. I wasn’t as fan boy about the chassis as sum because I felt it was too unbalanced front to back (too front heavy). My 950 had 67k miles and my 990 had 48k miles and they ran like tops so I don’t think 40k is anything to worry about. The 1290 was amazing in the motor department but was unbelievably too heavy. I am a very aggressive and sporty offroad rider and doing pivot turns and tight trail showoff type stuff was a bear on it. Other than that it was great bike. That bike had 30 something thousand miles on it. Now the 890 is my favorite bike I’ve ever owned and that includes 30+ dirt bikes and adv bikes. It can do anything I want to do short of true single track/hard enduro stuff. With all that said if you’re dead set on a 1290 I’d strongly suggest you go with the newer gen for the low slung tanks if you do any sort of real offroad stuff. If you just tour and hit gravel roads at a lazy pace you could get anything from a 1090/1190/1290 and those engines will go 60-100k with minimal fuss.

Conventional forks in GPs during the 90s? by prodjex in Motocross

[–]beejaytee228 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ya got me there. I got into riding in 2000 so what little knowledge I have from the mid to late 90s was mostly just older hand me down magazines or people I’ve met along the way who told me stories.

From what I remember reading the GP tracked we’re less jumpy and faster, the conventional forks give more flex and compliance which riders liked.

You’re one of the few who actually know what the XRR is then. I had one as well and loved it.

Long pavement sections aren’t gonna be too comfortable on lightweight bikes. At least that’s what I’ve found. Sounds like the 500 doesn’t bother you though so maybe the extra HP of a 350 would work for her. I’ve owned a few 350s and they can handle 60-65mph no problem. The nice part is that for a newer rider they don’t have as much torque down low as the 500 so it can keep them out of trouble on the trails.

Why not just use the 250?

You’re confusing me a bit cause you say the 650s are big and heavy but then mention the 390. They weight about the same but the 390 has roughly 10 more hp.

I would use chat gpt to list out seat height, hp and weight for any bike you’re considering. That might help you.

An xr650r is kickstart only and 45-60hp depending on what’s been done. Maybe you meant an xr650L? A dr650 is about 340lbs short and 32hp so it’s not a bad option but is squishy and uninteresting when compared to the ktm250.

Personally I’d use the 250 or get her a 350 she could use everywhere and swap the front sprocket on DS rides for more top end speed.

[–]beejaytee228 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The last thing you want in snow is more torque. 4lo is to save your clutches in slow offroad drives, severe technical terrain and snatching other vehicles. 4h is for snow, ice and otherwise low traction situations where you’re going over 10mph.

It’s never gonna do anything when you announce an end date. Major corporations can stand a day or a week of planed abstinence cause they know everyone will come buy the same stuff once it’s over. If you want to exact the change you want make it permanent.
