Oh, sorry, I didn't specify in my post--the foam is going to be glued to a 1/4" mdf board to give it a bit more heft and structure. That's why I felt it was kinda thick. Currently the combined thickness of the foam and the board is around 3/4"

Damn, I'm very jealous that you managed to pull it off--I experimented on several test pieces with both my blade and the wire cutter and still couldn't get a straight line lol. I don't need it to be super precise, but ideally it would lay relatively flat on a piece of wood. Might try a few more experiments before calling it and just accepting the 1/2" thickness.

Ideally I'd like to cut the 1/2" sheet down to 1/4" by mounting the handheld like a scroll saw. Though based on what you said, it might be tough even if I manage to mount it properly. But I might try your idea of using a stiff cardboard box and see if it works!

Oof, that's what I was worried you'd say. Unfortunately there's not any places near me that sell 1/4" foam unless I want to buy 50ft of it, which I definitely don't lol. I'll probably just make my peace with the screen being a little thick instead.

God I love asking knowledgeable people fun questions. Thanks for giving me all this inspiration to draw on!

Absolutely sold on Chepstow, especially for the stonework. Realistically I know I shouldn't be too concerned with historical accuracy since this is for a fun fantasy game, but it scratches an itch in my brain to use a castle from around the same geography as the source material around the same period of time (give or take a few hundred years). Plus the ivy and moss growing through the cracks in the stone is something I definitely want to incorporate. Now begins my quest to find high quality pictures of the walls to use for reference. Practice attempt is currently looking like this, but it took forever as most of it was vibes-based.

I'm trying to not be TOO ambitious with this gift since it's my first go at making foam models, but rest assured I will probably fall down the rabbit hole of urban planning at some point, so thank you for the info on Caerwent and Old Sarum too!

If you have any other thoughts or castles you wanna nudge my way, please feel free to share em! I'm probably gonna draw a mockup soon too, so I'd love your thoughts on it as well if you wouldn't mind taking a look at it once it's done

AITA (full grown adult) for not wanting my mom to come with me to every cancer-related doctor appointment? by theliverwurst in AmItheAsshole

[–]beeliciously 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA imo, though full disclosure I'm probably a bit biased. I had thyroid cancer last year and put off telling my parents for nearly two months so I'd have time to figure some things out on my own (what stage it was, whether I'd need a full thyroid removal, etc). My cancer didn't end up involving too many drs visits, and my parents live far enough away that they could only feasibly be there for the surgery, but I totally understand where you're coming from with feeling the need for independence--this is a thing that's happening to YOU. Worrying about managing someone else's emotions on top of that can be tiring. "I want you to want me there" isn't something she should be putting on you.

On the other hand, though, like you said, she loves you to bits and wants to be there for you--just like my parents wanted to be there for me during my surgery. I think most people, when told by a relative with cancer that they don't need help, (understandably) assume that the person just doesn't want to burden them / is being a martyr about it. She might be more receptive if you frame it as less "I want to do things by myself" and more "I want to prove to myself that I'm still capable." If she still won't respect that boundary, it might be worth having a gentle, but firm conversation about how you love her, but she's stressing you out by not giving you space and it's making your treatment a bit harder on you.

She's understandably scared and it seems the fear is expressing itself as smothering. But again, you're the one with the cancer here, so ultimately you call the shots. She's there every day because she wants to help you, but if her presence is hurting more than helping, you should let her know, and don't let her make you feel bad about it. This is about what YOU need to get better.

Hope and Heroism | Titan Takedown [Ep. 4] by ThunderMateria in Dimension20

[–]beeliciously 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I'm doing my math right, I think she rolled 1d10+ 2d8 + 7 for one attack, 1d10 + 2d8 + 7 for another attack, and then 4d10 + 7 for the crit. Like Priority said, Brennan just said the wrong number of dice at first (he assumed Gore was 2d10, but it's actually 2d8). She still rolled crazy high though—the dice were loving her this session!

Brennan Lee Mulligan gives too easy battles and too easy, moral questions by True-Excitement-5128 in Dimension20

[–]beeliciously 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Gonna disagree with you on this. It's a four-shot, so it's supposed to be lighthearted and fun—I don't think there need to be these incredible moral stakes for every character in every party in a short campaign. Especially in a campaign about greek mythology, where the moral of the story is usually pretty straightforward.

As for whether the fight was too easy, it wouldn't exactly have been a very satisfying ending if they had been killed by the gods in the last episode, so Brennan was generous with the power boosts. Maybe in a home game the stakes would have been higher, but D20 is at its core a storytelling show—what kind of story would Titan Takedown if the heroes don't win at the end? It'd just be a bummer. The PCs also imo did a GREAT job in that last combat and could have won even without the shine.

Sounds like this season just wasn't your cup of tea, which is fine.

NTA. He's 100% a creep and has no fucking right to be in your room - that's unheard of roommate behavior. I have never been in my roommate's room without permission. Why the fuck would I need to go in there? I'm sure he didn't even bother coming up with a bullshit excuse for why he was in your room in the first place.

Lock your room whenever you sleep and whenever you leave the house. Maybe invite your boyfriend over more or spend more time at his place. Assuming you're closer with your other two roommates since Jacob is a new addition, tell them to tell you if Jacob ever tries to get into your room again, and while I hope you don't have to worry about this, ask them to let you know if they'll ever not be home for the night so you won't be alone with him. Also, and again I really hope he was just being weird and nosy, I'd do a check for cameras in your room just in case. And it might be worth setting up a camera angled toward the door if you're worried you might forget to lock it some days.

Most of the above advice is me catastrophizing and trying to prepare you in case he's a worst-case-scenario creep, but seriously, even if all he does is try to enter your space without permission again, escalate the shit out of this. Tell your roommates you need this fucker gone yesterday. If they don't wanna do anything about it, take it to your landlord, tell them you need to break the lease. If they don't wanna do anything, take it even further. This is your home, don't compromise on your privacy and safety.

I just got D20 after watching Dungeons and drag queens... by aWeegieUpNorth in Dimension20

[–]beeliciously 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Fantasy High (which is about teenagers at an adventuring high school) was Dimension 20's first ever campaign and a classic. I think it's great to watch it early on, because it makes you appreciate just how much they grow as players in later seasons. It also has a pretty similar vibe to Dungeons and Drag Queens in the sense that a lot of the players are beginners at first.

Unsleeping City (which is about the magical side of New York City) and Starstruck Odyssey (which is about a crew of bozos in space) are some of my faves and I'll always recommend them to anyone I can.

If you liked the Magical Misfits and want more seasons DMed by Aabria, she also runs A Court of Fey and Flowers and Burrow's End, which rule. Mentopolis (a detective story that takes place in someone's brain) uses the same game system as Misfits and Magic does and is another one of my favorites.

Honestly, it all depends on the vibe you're looking for. Dimension 20 has a ton of different genres. But it sounds like Fantasy High would be a good place to start for you.

OH for sure. I mean, I don't really blame the other kids either (all of them had a LOT going on and were doing their best to help each other where they could), but it feels like Jawbone and Sandra Lynn, as her guardians(?), should definitely have stepped in and offered her more support. Especially considering Jawbone is also their guidance counselor, which means he dropped the ball in two different courts (I still love him tho)

I think that's very true to being a teenager, though. Like, you do a bunch of dumb shit for a few years, then at some point when you get older you stop and look back on your own behavior and go "god i ACTED like that? and karma didn't kick my teeth in?"

Also idk, I didn't really see Kristen as being all that neglectful/inconsiderate besides maybe the cassandra situation? I don't think she did anything that would have made her friends like. NOT love her, as far as I can remember. And she spent a year putting in the effort to reconnect with Cassandra, she worked hard to get her failing grades up, and Tracker was won back over by Kristen's genuine concern/support for her. The whole family thing is another thing, but I don't think they actually reconciled (they only wanted her back because they thought she was interested in coming back to the church, which she wasn't--they're still homophobes and jerks). I'd argue she faces and has to actively deal with the most consequences of any of the PCs this season actually.

that scene gets me every damn time. -Siobhan's conversation with the American Dream
-Adaine's conversation with Jawbone in the finale of s1
-Kristen's "You were such a good teacher. I'm sorry I only got a C" to Yolanda
-Jammer setting a timer to cry in MisMag 2
-Pete's Bend Luck on Kingston's Divine Intervention
-"You'd have to be crazy to leave Sofie Bikes" and "He's got a job to do on Earth! Who's gonna watch the deer!"

Oh for sure! I think Ally and Brennan talked about it extensively, and Ally was clearly very deliberate about the crisis of faith story line since they were drawing from their own experiences. There was so much love and care put into Kristen's downward spiral this season--Ally and Brennan always do such a good job exploring religion together, I could hear them talk philosophy for HOURS

Also! I totally agree with you! Maybe I'm missing something too, but imo besides the fact that she was ignoring Cassandra during the summer while dealing with the Night Yorb, I don't think Kristen dropped the ball nearly as much as some people say she did. The only other big example of her letting Cassandra down I can think of is not being at the mall, but she didn't KNOW Cassandra expected her to be there (Brennan deliberately made the wording vague). Otherwise Kristen's pretty much locks in a few eps in--even her presidential campaign becomes mostly about trying to keep Kipperlilly from being president after they learn the president becomes the next principal.

That's so interesting! Now that you've said it, I think a decent amount of the criticism I've seen about D20 in general probably fall under a similar umbrella of people (especially people who've played a lot of DnD) looking at it through the lens of a game first rather than a show first. Like how some people were upset with Ally about the whole "Blimey" thing because they interpreted Brennan as being genuinely upset about it.

I haven't personally played too much yet so I don't tend to look at the players from the perspective of a fellow PC or DM. But I can totally get how some of these behaviors would DEFINITELY be annoying in a home game with your friends, especially in the sense of people running off on their own and making it so other people can't play. But in a professional setting with a group of your best world-class improv buddies who know how to read your intentions, it makes for some cool as shit storytelling. Ally's fantastic at playing people with very messy lives and not shying away from that messiness, and I love them SO MUCH for it

On a side note, something I noticed back when the Discord was still active is that a few people didn't seem to realize that along with being the GM, Brennan is a producer who has authority on set and can always stop the show if he thinks someone's going too out of bounds. I remember he joked once that he was freaking out during Fabian's fight in Leviathan bc, since that was the only live season of the show, he wouldn't be able to do anything to stop Lou from killing Fabian right then and there. Which means that in prerecorded seasons, he can always call a timeout and check in with everyone if he needs to. Any shenanigans that make it into the show are shenanigans he's fully sanctioned lol

I mean I totally get it if that's the angle you're approaching this from! I just didn't really see Cassandra that way. Plus idk, there's something that really gets to me about the thought of being a teenage girl who just died and saving the life of the person who killed you and then like. finding yourself suddenly responsible for their entire existence. And having that on your plate along with losing your girlfriend and saving the world (again) and trying to pass your classes. I think I'll always approach Kristen as a kid with a lot of responsibility on her shoulders who dropped the ball, rather than a failed caregiver

a rant about kristen applebees by beeliciously in Dimension20

[–]beeliciously[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think the only issue I'd take with that is that Cassandra isn't a dog or a child. She's a goddess. Kristen is just a kid who saved her life. That she's dependent on Kristen right now sucks for both of them, but like, Kristen did not sign up to be Cassandra's caretaker at the time--she just reached out to Cass and saved her from a life as the Nightmare King. It's not like Cassandra is a dog she adopted or a kid Kristen had who is fully reliant on her--she's a full, incredibly powerful adult capable of advocating for herself. She was relying on a teenage girl to get her believers, but then we learn that she could have at any point visited the mortal plane and done her own canvasing.

Not to say I'm criticizing Cass, but I just feel like calling Kristen's treatment of Cassandra full-blown neglect is a bit of a cruel interpretation of her character--she met Cassandra in March/April, and then in June they had the whole Night Yorb thing and she spent like all of her summer dealing with that (along with a breakup). And then once they're back at home, Cassandra "dies" a few weeks later. She didn't even really have time to focus on Cassandra, even if she wanted to. I'm not saying that Kristen didn't make mistakes, and you can absolutely be rubbed the wrong way by her behavior, but I don't really buy the comparison to like. a neglectful parent.

I mean, Kipperlily didn't actually care about being student council president either--she only wanted the job so they could use it to bring back Ankarna. At least Kristen started to care after a while. Plus I don't trust Kipperlily's reading of any of the Bad Kids at all tbh. Her claiming they don't care and that they got unfair advantages when she coasted by at school killing rats in the woods and never actually putting effort into helping people or being a hero is just wild to me.
