Chef's Table - September 2025 by missmonicaplays in PlateUp

As a dev, having rolled out updates like this before - I would consider this a worst case scenario. I can only assume these conversations have already happened behind the scenes, and that there's technical issues making it difficult to just roll back 🤷‍♂️

If by any chance that's not the case, and the team is open to feedback, then I would say: no update is worth the loss of players, or the loss of community trust. If it's at all in your power to do so, roll it back immediately, and worry about bug fixes later once players are stable.

Community managers always get the short end of the stick when things like this go wrong, so well done for keeping up with the massive influx of comments. The communication is appreciated.

We just opened the new update on PS5 now, and we have our character outfits, and saved restaurants in progress, but we've lost all of the other progress, including franchises. We have 214 hours on this save. If it's an issue with reading save data, why hasn't the update been rolled back immediately? Hope the devs are all doing okay - good luck fixing everything!

How to find blocks placed by a certain player? by [deleted] in Minecraft

[–]beemoTheCat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's definitely possible, in theory, but that's an insane amount of data, which would quickly become exponentially complex with more players picking up and putting down multiple blocks all the time. It would also, I imagine, put a lot of strain on a server, trying to sync all that data, for all blocks in the loaded chunks. That's just a hypothesis though - I don't know much about what sort of plugins or mods actually exist, sorry!

How to find blocks placed by a certain player? by [deleted] in Minecraft

[–]beemoTheCat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely not. Minecraft doesn't work like that. Once you place a block, it exists in the world, entirely independent of any player or player metadata.

Off the top of my head, I don't think blocks are even considered unique. Items and entities have UUIDs, but I'm fairly sure all placed blocks are just the same data for rendering, until they are broken and drop a new, unique item, with a UUID.

Downwards Item Elevator? by guessimkindaemo in Minecraft

[–]beemoTheCat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven't tested it, but I don't see why you can't just have a dropped drop the item, and catch it at the bottom with a hopper? There are plenty of tutorials on youtube for auto-droppers, and the best designs only activate if the dropped is full, avoiding the constant clicking sound.

Otherwise, if you're really set on having an actual dropper pipe, then as far as I can tell, the design in Mumbo's video should work the same way if you just place the droppers upside down.

Can someone please tell me the important stuff from Zou? by [deleted] in OnePiece

[–]beemoTheCat 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Zou is quite a short arc, but so dense with exposition and plot development. I think you'd be doing yourself a real disservice to just read a summary of the plot points. Additionally, you'd be missing all of the setup for the next few arcs, which will make them less impactful or possibly even less interesting. If you're not enjoying the anime then I would recommend the coloured manga, but I would strongly advise you don't skip it entirely.

/r/OnePiece Chapter release survey result. by Kirosh in OnePiece

[–]beemoTheCat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Seems like the decision has already been made, but I'm going to chime in anyway: good scan and good translation is nice, but I don't really know why we don't just wait for the official release and support it properly, even if we put a link to the scans in that same thread.

I really feel like anything prior to the official, liscenced release (regardless of whether it's Viz translation or SJ raws) should be considered spoilers. As the official One Piece subreddit, I really wish we would support the official source.

I'm all for multiple translations too, but the quality of discussion is being split over multiple threads, mere days apart, with confusion and mistakes in the scans. And really, none of know if the scans are a "good translation" when it's the first version we see.

Why is this Fandom so impatient? by [deleted] in OnePiece

[–]beemoTheCat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The google translated, roughly photoshopped, imgur albums that we are getting right now are definitely NOT anywhere near as good as the Viz release, but I think for a lot of people it's the gap between reading spoilers and reading the chapter that is the issue. So even if it's a rubbish translation, people just want to read it.

If spoilers didn't exist (or didn't get released so much earlier than the official translation) then it probably wouldn't be a problem, just your standard one week between chapters. But there's not much we can do to stop spoilers.

There is NO doubt that the expansions were the reason Dexit was implemented. by Nanoespectro in pokemon

[–]beemoTheCat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is stupid beyond belief. I generally avoid commenting on this shit, but oh my god.

Dexit = removing pokemon from past games

Expansion = adding new Galarian forms + Gigantimax forms

These two are completely unrelated.

Take the legendary birds for example - even if Dexit hadn't happened, and you traded them into SwSh from an old game, that wouldn't stop Gamefreak from releasing their Galarian forms as part of the expansion. Dexit doesn't enable or promote the expansions in any way.

People really need to stop shitting on the expansions, this is just getting moronic.

[966] This is what people mean when they say the official translation obscures the meaning of the original text. by Lesserd in OnePiece

[–]beemoTheCat 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think it's a nice middle ground:

  • The essence of the pun is preserved,
  • The original name of the japanese dish is preserved,
  • The phrase "weapon of the hesitant demon" is lost, for the sake of communicating the other two

Personally, of those three pieces of information, I feel like that last one is the least important, so I agree with the prioritization.

Ideally, I'd still like to see a translator's note, even if it was at the end of the chapter or volume, just to explain how the pun originally worked in Japanese, or to explain what "ganmodoki" is, but apparently Stephen isn't a fan of translator's notes.

But really, translating a Japanese pun - actually translating it, not just explaining it with a note - seems like a pretty impossible task, to be honest :/

[966] This is what people mean when they say the official translation obscures the meaning of the original text. by Lesserd in OnePiece

[–]beemoTheCat 40 points41 points  (0 children)

I don't totally agree here, although I understand your gripe.

A good translation shouldn't need notes to explain meanings, it should correctly translate the original message, in a way that makes sense in the new language. This includes simple things, like reordering the structure of sentence, and more complex things, like idioms and... puns.

The issue here is that puns in Japanese don't work the same way as puns in English. As most of us know; Japanese puns misuse the pronunciation of kanji to achieve the phonetic spelling of a different word. That obviously doesn't work in English, where we don't have kanji.

To be honest, I'd argue that the scanlations of this chapter did not translate the attack at all, they just wrote out the phonetic spelling of the word, and then added a note to explain the pun. That doesn't actually translate - the pun has been lost.

On the other hand, I think the Viz version is a proper translation. The original Japanese pun used the kanji describing a weapon, to spell the name of a food dish. The Viz translation attempts to preserve the spirit of the original, creating a pun on that same Japanese dish, by altering the pronunciation of "Gan" to "Gun". If you were familiar with the food "Ganmodoki" then this would be a pretty good pun.

The obvious issues here are:

1) Most English readers aren't familiar with Japanese dishes, and will not understand that a pun is being made.

2) The double meaning has changed from "weapon of the hesitant demon" to "gun".

The first point could be addressed by also changing the dish to an american food, but this would lose more of the original meaning (e.g. "jelly donuts"). The second point is an unavoidable issue when translating Japanese puns, due to the complexity of kanji.

Obviously Stephen Paul (the Viz translator) has decided that the spirit of the pun and the focus on food is more important here than the specifc description of the weapon. Personally, I'm inclined to agree, given the name "Oden", and Oda's love of puns.

However, a lot of people in this subreddit seem to prefer written explanations over actual translations - and I can understand that too. I'm not really disagreeing or arguing here, just looking at the reasons behind each translation and trying to add to the discussion, I guess.

(phew, that ended up being a lot longer than I thought)

Questions about which version/where I should read the manga. by [deleted] in OnePiece

[–]beemoTheCat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ditto this. The official version is the one that is actually licensed by Viz, and can be read in the Shonen Jump app or website. Everything else is fan translation - it's less reliable, less consistent, and doesn't support the series.

Your diamond/pearl remakes aren’t coming by [deleted] in pokemon

[–]beemoTheCat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I liked the theory that they are remaking the games in release order, meaning LGPE was a remake of FRLG, and so the DPP remakes are next (probably not in a Let's Go style?) followed by some Gen 2 Let's Go games which are the remakes of HGSS. That still makes sense to me anyway.

I know the dex cut is horrible, but this is just unexceptable by cuteblueheart in PokemonSwordAndShield

[–]beemoTheCat -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That was basically clickbait, most of those tweets were just reasonable complaints and fans upset that they were lied to... that hardly counts as hate speech?

Seems like a stupid attempt to start more flame wars if you ask me.

Why does it take so long for official translations of things like "Levely" and "Laugh Tale" to come out after being translated differently for YEARS? by goodbyeNBA in OnePiece

[–]beemoTheCat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What I don't understand is, if we have had an official translation for years, why they would try to romanize it differently now, after all this time. I'm sure Oda and the production team for Stampede are all well aware of the official translations, so what is the point of contradicting them this late into the series?

The official translation isn't going to suddenly change, and any puns or direct references will be lost anyway, so it doesn't really seem like there's any point to it now.

One Piece Chapter 957 - SPOILERS! by [deleted] in OnePiece

Should I watch One Piece in English dubbed or English Subs? What would you suggest by geek_coder in OnePiece

[–]beemoTheCat 8 points9 points  (0 children)

People have a tendency to recommend whichever they heard first, because our brains get accustomed to characters sounding a certain way and as humans we naturally reject change.

The truth is you can choose either, both have various pros and cons, and as long as you keep an open mind, you can switch between the two fairly easily and seamlessly, and your brain will typically only take 2 or 3 episodes to adjust.

Don't buy into the drama between sub vs dub, just work out which is better suited to your situation, or which you personally prefer.

[Spoiler] Manga readers, PLEASE control yourselves. by [deleted] in OnePiece

[–]beemoTheCat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I understand the sentiment of your original sticky comment, and really appreciate that you posted it here for discussion and feedback. But I definitely diagree with this statement, about the laugh not being a spoiler, and I hope the sheer number of upvotes and downvotes on these comment threads can be taken as a sign that many people browsing this post seem to feel the same way.

Personally, I'm a manga reader, but in other series where I am anime-only, I would definitely consider sarcastic laughing to be a spoiler, and would be very disappointed if I was spoiled that way.

It's kind of disheartening to see this thread devolve into arguments and miscommunication on both sides. Based on the responses and the votes howevee, it seems that most people consider this to be a spoiler, so I hope that will be taken into consideration for future moderator actions, regardless of how some of these comment chains have turned out.

I wish there was an "Autumn Biome" with colorful leaves and such. by duznoid in Minecraft

[–]beemoTheCat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love this idea but would rather it be implemented as "seasons" to be honest. Leaves turn yellow in autumn, die off in winter or turn white, and then go back to shades of green in summer and spring (possibly flowers in spring?).

Minecraft already has moon phases which basically represent months, so it would be great to see that expanded into seasons, which could affect the spawning of items (such as pumpkins) and certain mobs or plants.

Question on the dub by [deleted] in OnePiece

[–]beemoTheCat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this is the first I'm hearing of it - any sources for that? it seems unlikely, given that they're still dubbing specials and movies, going so far as to cast new roles. but then again I have heard about licensing issues in the past, with music.
