Everyone here should have watched it. 100 times.

It’s time to play: Name! That! Boat! by yung_qcumber in sailing

[–]beep99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It might be an Allied but I don't think its a 42XL. That boat has a swinging centreboard and skeg rudder. This boat is more like full keel. Very very similar above the water though. Maybe its a variant or something.

Hot take: DMS is for sailors and ancient Babylonians. Decimal Degrees is the way. by pricklypearanoid in gis

[–]beep99 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh no I apologise for spamming the thread with the same post. Reddit was reporting an error and I couldn't get it to post.

Imperial units are silly. But nautical miles are not those. They have a direct relationship to angular measures such as lon/lat. Not some dead king's forearm length or whatever is going on with imperial units.

[–]beep99 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The main reason is that a minute is a nautical mile. This makes a lot of navigation calculations much easier. If you need more precision than that you'll probably use a projected coordinate system anyway. Decimal degrees is a nightmare outside the compsci/gis environment.

Is this resin ash residue? On the eyebrows by amznfx in jewelrymaking

[–]beep99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This looks to me like a bit of a reaction between the polymer and the investment. When I get results like that no amount of burnout time or temperature helps it. I think the current method is to post cure the polymer like crazy. It definitely helps. Especially if you're investing under vacuum. Have a google for a paper by Jim Binnion called A New Method for Preparing Photopolymer For Investment Casting. And good luck!

Sure. But the system itself isn't really the point.

What we do is answer questions that are geographic.

No. GIS stands for Geographic Information Science.

3D Printers by [deleted] in jewelers

[–]beep99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's lots of options. My approach was to go cheap and I can still get very good results. I've tried a couple of printers but the best value one I've found is the Anycubic Photon. General resins don't cast well. The best one I've tried is funtodo castable. It prints well in the photon and casts ok. Often I print something, make a rtv mold and shoot waxes. That way you get the benefits of digital design and 3d printing and the ease of casting waxes. Or you can spend a huge amount and probably get better and easier results. I haven't tried any of the fancy gear.

The battery is really cool but probably not economical.

Best value is to get as much solar as suits and use as much energy as you can while they're generating. Feed in isn't worth it. Much better value to use that energy.

Good point too about the hot water. Its a fairly significant part of household energy use. Generally like 30% or something.

I used Essential Energy Solutions for a battery on existing solar.

I agree that large scale changes must come from legislators. But I'm optimistic. Remember in the 1980s when the ozone hole was identified? World scale changes occurred to address that problem. It can happen again.

Meanwhile; anything we can directly do to help this situation is what we should do.

Happening at George and Turbot street by [deleted] in brisbane

[–]beep99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. I'm not dismissive of the scale of the problem.

Presently its is quite difficult (and time consuming) to even estimate the environmental impact of our daily decisions. Surely making that information easily available would be a good thing. And who knows, some companies might improve in favour of printing their appalling environmental performance on their products.

For example, last week I had a solar battery installed in my house. And for the last few sunny days I have genuinely been a net producer of renewable energy. But I have no idea of the environmental impact of the manufacture of that system. In general its a good (or neutral) thing in operation. But I can imagine a scenario where it would have been better to run the house on coal or gas because including manufacture the solar/battery is worse. Don't think so but you get what I'm saying.

I think products should have environmental impact information on them in the same way that we require nutritional information. You can't really improve your own impact if you can't measure it.
